Whoah, me? A gamemode release?

WARNING, somewhat big wall of text. Scroll for short version, screens and download.

Description
Gmod stranded is an extensive survival/RPG gamemode inspired by the game Stranded II. Been working on it passively for a few weeks.

You have three basic needs, food, water and sleep. If you lack either of them, you will lose health. To gain food, simply eat. To gain water, simply drink. You can also sleep to regain sleep. But it's a much wider gamemode than that. It's based of sandbox, so you can still build. In fact, building your shelter is a big part of the gamemode. But you can't just spawn any prop out of nowhere. For wooden props, you need wood. To get wood, you must chop wood. To chop wood, use either your hands (slower) or an axe (fast) at a tree. You will then gain wood, and some lumbering skill. The gamemode is far too wide to describe here though, but luckily, a download is included at the bottom

Skills
There are a range of skills to discover in this gamemode, this is currently a beta though, so only about 5 of them are actually obtainable. Skills are very useful in the game, with lumbering skill, your chances of successfully chopping wood increases. Also, several features are unlocked with a certain skill. For example, with 3 survival skill, you unlock sprint, and with both 5 lumbering and harvesting, you can collect sprouts from trees, which can again be planted for new trees. Many features can only be unlocked this way.

Resources
There are plenty of resources in the game, most of them are used to spawn props. The material type of the prop defines what resources are needed to spawn it. The weight of the prop defines how many resources you need. Resources are used for other things too, though.

I dropped the wood into a resource crate for easy pickup.
The gmod icon with the text slowly rotates above the crate.

How to play
At the moment, it's not overly easy to play. However, it's still fun. With future versions the gameplay will probably be heavily enchanced though.

As the admin, you should open the admin menu and place some trees and rocks, either with the automated tree/rock maker, or manually. There's an easy to use admin menu that only appears for admins. Once some resources are placed, you should start building a shelter, and forage the grass for some seeds to plant melons with. The shelter should be build nearby water. This way, you have shelter for safe sleep, food and water. To forage, press use on the ground. Not all types of ground can be foraged though.

Short version
Server commands
  • gms_AutoSave < 0/1 > - Turn on/off autosaving of characters.
  • gms_AutoSaveTime <minutes> - Defines how often to autosave.
  • gms_AllTools < 0/1 > - Turn on/off all tools on spawn. Recommended in beta.
  • gms_FreeBuild < 0/1 > - If on, prop spawning is free.

Features
  • Skills system.
  • Resource system.
  • Easy to use, clean interface. No chat commands and the likes.
  • Planting system for reproductive land.
  • Character saving and automatic loading.
  • A help menu on spawn, kinda empty, but it should help some.
  • Much more, can't remember it all.

This one is a well done map by eXperion, some starting trees, lots of water and lots of space.


gms_islands_V1
This is also a good map, made by conman420. It's three islands in the middle of nowhere, with a few rocks and trees.


gms_bumpy
This map is, as the title implies, a bumpy flat, with some water. Made by Imanobody.


gms_minisurvival_v2
One medium sized island with a lot of trees and rocks. It looks really good . Made by Leintharien. Optimized in v2.


gms_oasis 1.5
A hilly map with water, trees and rocks. Made by Bacon Man.


gms_Desperation
A pretty big map with lots of water and islands. Made by subhazardman. I'll just link to the release thread

When I try to chop or mine stuff I spawn, I get frozen after I finish. I can't move, and if I suicide I can't respawn. Also, none of my needs are changing.

Sounds like something big errored on spawn, check your console for errors and post them please ;)

You know what rocks? This gamemode rocks. Even playing on my own was fun. Although I had to spawn everything myself. Where do you get iron? I need iron to make an explosive barrel to blow up a tree to get loads of wood.

You gain iron from mining rocks. It's random wether you get stone or rocks. And be sure to turn on all tools, it's much easier to get with a pickaxe.

Second bug: Might be the hands using no viewmodel, I'll dig up the actual blank viewmodel I guess.

Third bug: Indeed, I've enountered this one. But I need the exact circumstances, it's horribly hard to replicate, every time I try to replicate it always turns out working.

Thanks for feedback, and a small update may already be coming soon. I added nicer effects for melons, now with a plant, and everything that used to fade in now also slowly rises from the ground as well. Also added grain farming, unlocked at planting level 3.

I think it's to do with line 1166 and 1173. I noticed that it said I was carrying 50/25 resources ( 25 wood + 25 herbs ) therefore

int = (self:GetAllResources() + int) - self.MaxResources -- 1166: will be negative
ent.Amount = ent.Amount - int -- 1173: will be adding to the entity instead of taking

Nice find, thanks a lot!

Added a new feature unlock "Expert Farmer" at planting 20, currently it only makes melonplants grow up to three melons instead of one though.

When I've added a fishing rod for fish and a cooking system, I'll release an update.

Forgive me for not playing the beta before suggesting but maybe you could add another need? the need to stay warm?
Would make it much of a survival type game, and perhaps give some use to the "campfire" maybe adding a new skill of fire-lighting?
(sorry if there's already a use for a campfire but i don't have the time to check this out just yet, i shall tomorrow!)

Campfire shall be used for cooking.

And yeah, I've though about it, but I need more factors that could change the temperature. I mean sure, cold in water, warm by a fire, but there should be more.

And no, no overcomplicated shit please

We need to fight in this like some aniamal to kill us "SNPC" are released , problem is that we can't use any models that arent "NPC" models already

Example:I used a burnt corpes model for a "SNPC" now lets play the game oh, shit now it's a "ERROR" for some reason.

I can tell you that is because the models were not made with the scripted functions of the movement.

I don't think Garry fixed the gamemode bug.So well this work?


Can't see the thing in single player.

Wait what the fuck I have two folders "Gamemode" ,and "Gamemodes"

Someone said this bug earlier yet I'm having it when I eat food I can't move or do anything I kill my self ,and nothing happens.

Please fix it.

Please explain. Also check your console for lua errors, highlighted in blue and yellow.

Also, it's gamemodes, not gamemode ;)

Removing Hook 'GMS_UseKeyHook"

From what i see the function won't work so it's remove now it's screwing up the gamemode cause of that.

Edit:

I will restart ,and see if it still does that


Just try'ed again and after that happens ,and I don't leave "GMOD" no commands will work.

hey I was just messing around in my server when I went to get a watermelon that fell in the water and I ate it in the water then this error came up

as for suggestions with herbs you should be able to mix and match certain things like herbs + grain = need for water has lowered for a certain amount of time
