I don't think its just the length that was disappointing, but that I've spent my entire life being a hardcore Nintendo fan, always have been and Super Mario 3D Land wasn't innovative or new and was an incredibly safe game, and it frustrates me. Nintendo could be out there making some of the new best games of all time but they keep making these little safe games or sequels. I mean for Nintendo Direct E3 they literally announced only sequels, and it just makes me scream why. There hasn't (for me at least) been a must have game from Nintendo since Galaxy 2. They've made good games since then sure but they just keep missing the beat by playing it safe as heck. Also Yoshis Island DS is v.good I highly recommend it.

game like Mario 3D Land? Crash Bandicoot, it was the first example of something to solve the problems you described involving the camera by having it fixed on a rails while you traverse a 3D area. And it was more innovative too with varied gameplay and its over 15 years old. Mario 3D Land/World are nothing new and disappointing entries to the platforming Mario franchise.

Also the point about regarding it as a handheld is void an null. Mario 64 DS and Yoshis Island 2/DS showed that console styled games could work perfectly on a handheld. One of them even solved camera issues with only one movement d-pad hm
