Yeah, I know what you mean. I think people see it as a bit reckless, because they think you mean "drop out of school, spend all your money, etc.", when in reality if you do it right (I.E don't waste all your money or drop out of education), and you're sensible about that attitude, it's probably the best way to live

There's nothing direct from Calgary, as far as I know. You'll have to either fly to Winnipeg or Thompson then take the train the rest of the way, according to this.

Flights from Calgary to Winnipeg should be cheap though.
