You're right that she was being a really bad mother, in fact I think they're probably going be keeping a very strict eye on her over the coming years, which may sadly end in that child being put under protective services etc. However her racist remarks were also poor, the kid wasn't really of age to understand them but because they were coming out of the mouth of his mother he's probably going to be brought up with the same beliefs whether thats how he would have thought or not.
