I pretty much learned everything I know from source codes. If I didn't get it, I looked it up. Actually pretty helpful.
GM's tutorials are honestly pretty trash. I kind of just did the first one, them scoured online for help whenever I got stuck!

I've largely seen Game Maker to Unity, as Pivot Animator is to Adobe Flash.
Game Maker isn't as fleshed out, but does not mean you can't make truly impressive things with what you are given.
