OK, it's an idea thread, spam me if you want, but I'm a coder and if people like the idea, I'll probably create it, although I'll most likely base it on a pre-made RP script, since there's no point wasting time on the basics.

Anyway, the idea is to get HL2 RP right, which requires looking at the HL2 universe.

As a citizen, you live under the oppressive rule of the combine. The CP's randomly do drug busts and beatings as well as always checking for anti-citizen behavior. There's no 'spawn' menu though, or toolgun. In fact, I would expect such a regime to give certain people (who apply?) licenses to sell certain things. And I don't mean gun dealers, I mean people to sell furniture, food, pretty much everything you can 'buy'.

I would limit players to only owning one type of license at once. However, they can 'spawn' these items, from a custom menu, using combine deportation tech, they can have batches of 5 items delivered. To their 'virtual store'. They can then sell the items individually, making a profit.

All citizens would be given rations on top of what they trade between each other, daily, but only small amounts, barely enough to keep hunger under control (hunger, of course, would be included).

By joining the CP, or helping the CP (if you were to find a warranted anti-citizen, you could turn them in, for example), citizens could earn tokens.

Then, there's always the rebellious route, label yourself as a rebel, but be careful, if you're spotted by any CP in rebel gear, you are automatically a target of attack, for obvious reasons. Then you can trade in the black market, which has no license system of course, but is high expensive to get the parts for a gun, which you'd have to make yourself using building skills. (I'm a big vague on the gun stuff).

Lastly, custom toolgun which would just really be nail, rope, maybe a welder tool too.

Anyway, other ideas to make HL2RP actually like the HL2 universe would be great, I'm sick of RP gamemodes using the sandbox menu as a base and allowing you to spawn props and slap them together at will.

ps. parp (post apocalypse RP) is still going on, of course

Even though it's an idea thread, it's a good idea.
Also, I'd like advertise my own gamemode. Try it :3

Don't forget that 'checking anti-citizen behaviour' means beating up every citizen who is stupid enough to bump at you :3 (No, seriously. Barney did mention something about a 'beating quota' in the beginning of HL2, didn't he?) Also, see my last comment regarding the spawnmenu.

I find this idea good, too!

This should be a bit like on TnB. There's only a small amount of trusted people, who are allowed to be rebels. And this means mainly that they randomly do some attacks on combine, but mostly do passive RP outside the city. Only a few people really can sell guns.
Lastly, custom toolgun which would just really be nail, rope, maybe a welder tool too.
You could just restrict tools, but whatever.

Well, that's mainly because it's convenient to use pre-existing systems familiar to the user. They want to furnish their apartment a bit, so they fire up the spawn menu and spawn a few sofas.

Excellent......
Let's get rid of Taco&Nubbana and friends

As for the gamemode I suggest:

-Get some sort of /sit animation, like HGN Stalker rp has....... It will make things soo much simplier

True, but I think we could adapt that a bit, otherwise it's open to abuse.

I don't want the RP to be restrictive, but it seems logical.

I hate the spawn menu, because it feels like cheating. Sofas should either cost between citizens, or be given out by the combine rule.

They are all different, though. Slightly. :D

This would be a good idea. I know my gamemode isn't meant to be HL2RP. It's just RP. An actual HL2 RP gamemode would be great.

That's DarkRP to the bone really, and a good portion of what you posted are nothing more than DarkRP edits. If you knew your Gmod RP, you'd also know that DarkRP and its numerous edits are the bane of a vast majority of RP communities, for various reasons. And some of the ideas the OP posted certainly seem to want to take it all in a more serious RP direction.

Just submitting my two cents.

One of the problems with establishing a HL2RP is that of peoples' natural tendency to deathmatch. Why would anyone want to be your average Joe selling mattresses when you can be out smuggling SMGs and fighting the oppressive Combine? To be a true HL2RP, you need the middle ground.

i think it would be pretty cool if there was some secret way, (i.e. taking the right path, choosing this answer, taking the red pill, etc) when ur a rebel to end up with gordon freeman. a bit unoriginal, but maybe that could turn into something.otherwise that sounds great. OH, and as a rebel, you should be given a choice of many jobs, like assassin, spy, etc. and you could make the assassin job a little like assassin's creed, hidden blade, throwing knives, an ya. i know these arent the most original ideas, but maybe something you hadnt thought of.

I don't think that that is the OP's gamemode.... or are we talking about esalaka's in this thread?

EDIT----

Or is the OP just giving advices to all the gamemode coders around lately?

From what I remember, the OP is a good lua scripter and has no plans to edit someone elses script. I'm also pretty sure all he wants is feedback on the idea.

I dislike the idea because there are just so many failed HL2RP attempts, please, please for the love of God use a new and original idea. Anything but HL2, real life, STALKER or some dodgy knockoff zombie roleplay. We need new roleplaying communites with innovative ideas or we won't get anywhere.

I'm not too sure there are many other universes we can explore with RP...and HL2 is by far the most versatile. What else can we bend? Black Mesa? That's always fun, but there's only one script for it...possibly make that.

TF2?

Portal *could* work, but without a working/decent portal gun, might kinda defeat the point.

Black Mesa woldn't be to much fun if you don't like slow ass rp. cuz it would pretty much be just rolelplaying a scientist.

Invent your own world and civilization! Or just create something fictional on earth. There are no good fantasy RPs, either. (More like low fantasy, obviously. No dragons and shit.)

Dunno how that would turn out, really; the TF2 universe wasn't designed for story or such in mind, I'd say. Surprised that, for all its content use, there's been no CS:S roleplay or something even remotely tactical of sorts.

What's everyone's opinions on, say, a war RP? Like, your usual rival factions, but players can freely switch between PVP and RP (PVP can't hurt RP, RP can't hurt PVP), and players actually start with guns instead of having to buy them? That way, minges can go kill other PVPers without much 'loss' if they die, and the RPers can roleplay their combat or something? Just an underdeveloped idea turning over in my head, trying to think of crap other than HL2, real life, Fallout/apocalypse, or zombies.
