PVP is all I'd be interested in, the main appeal of EVE to me is that the PVP in the game has an active effect on everybody else, rather than in games such as WoW, where everybody is segregated in to different servers, and players have no real effect on the world.
Find a decent PVP corp as soon as possible.

Then you'll DEFINITELY need buddies. The best you'll get for a long time going it solo is can flipping other rookies.

I went in wanting to shoot things. I didn't care if they were human or AI, I just wanted to shoot them. I got in a wonderful corp full of actual nice people who've helped me out tremendously along the way. Month and a half in and I'm already running around in a wormhole and I have my own battleship, whereas if I'd gone it alone I'd probably only just be getting into cruisers.

    Gotta love having friends.

what do you do when you lose your ratting mach and cnr to the guys who have been in the same system as you, with scouts on all the gates, for over 2 hours?
that's right, you go straight back out in your vargur and try to leave the system via a gate!

and yes, it is the same guy who got his rorqual stolen from a jump-bridge pos.

I'm pretty sure Red Federation and Blue Republic are still around, they're essentially two red vs blue corps always warring. Could also look into a factional warfare corp though I've heard that's not so great.

How well can you fly it? Support and fitting skills are rather important

There are some hidden skill requirements.
You may not be able to use the correct size weapons and modules for your ship.
For example, (generally), frigates fit small weapons, cruises fit medium, and battleships fit large (missile analogue would be rocket/light missile, heavy/heavy assault missiles, cruise/torpedo)

And as DarkMonkey said, you may be missing some other critical skills.

Being able to undock it and being able to use it for more than mall crawling are two entirely different things. I'm able to actually use my BS, which as far as I can gather from my corpmates is astonishingly fast.

You shouldn't rush into ships. You need to take things step by step. I started less then a week ago and I am still only flying a Frig. Once I can fly it well and do good DPS then I will consider upgrading to a Cruiser or most likely a Battlecruiser.

Only sansha and amarr are playable right now though.

Cruiser and up leave wrecks. Frigates leave debris.

They also got the coming out of warp thing right in it. Wonder how they did it on homeworld's engine.

Do you have T2 damage mods? Those are easy to train for and pretty vital. Support skills such as guided missile precision or warhead upgrades will allow you to hit smaller targets or do more damage. Additionally, training for things like shield management will increase your tank and let you strip some tank modules and replace them with mods that will help you deal damage (BCUs in the lows, target painter in the mid).

Interdiction is for fast tackle as well as warp-ins(get behind the enemy fleet and warp to a distance) that's close enough to the enemy fleet. They do well at this because they go about 4000(6000 m/s overheated).

Black ops is a get in and kill then exit as fast as possible. Most black ops use Jump portals to jump Cov ops bombers and T3s(/w cov ops Subsystem) to a targeted cyno. Most black ops use a Covert Cyno in witch the cyno it self doesn't appear in the overview like normal ones, Thus making them like a mini titans. The only good black ops ships are the Redeemer and the Widow (panther maybe). PL uses black ops fleets a lot and in large numbers. They cant do damage without numbers so taking on a 10 man fleet would be disastrous. so in summery They go in, Kill a key target, Leave.

I didn't get my plex in time...

That's because you're mining in a cruiser, and you're doing it wrong.

Plant like 6 passworded GSCs at your belt, mine in a retriever or better, then when all cans are full, retrieve with an industrial.

    Rinse and repeat.

Also don't mine anything but Kernite if you're in HS.
