Modulus Software Presents... MuseX

Info: MuseX is a multimedia player for Garry's Mod. It has the ability to play a multitude of audio formats, including, but not limited to MP3, Wave, Ogg Vorbis, Windows Media Audio, and Midi. MuseX allows you to browse and play music from any directory, on any drive on your computer, with it's fully functional media browser.

Features:
  • Fully functional media player, supporting seek and volume.
  • Playlists.
  • Support for a multitude of audio formats, anything you have codecs for.
  • Hotkeys.
  • Visualizations - Currently disabled.
  • Browse any location on your computer for media.
  • Special Derma skin system allows you to create your own skins without affecting the rest of your Derma panels.

Other Info: This was a collaboration between Foszor and I. He wrote everything you see. I wrote what you don't see, the module. The visualizations are disabled because in the initial version we had some crashing issues we'd like to fix before releasing those.

Installation:
  1. Extract musex.zip into your garrysmod\addons directory.
  2. Run install modules.bat, this will copy the modules to the required directories.

Usage:
  • To open MuseX type musex into the console.
  • Alternatively you can use the hotkey Ctrl+Shift+M.

Everything about this is perfect apart from the fact that the hotkeys editor doesn't detect media keys (play/pause, stop, next/back) on my keyboard.

I know BASS can stream audio, but I dunno about DirectShow.

Besides, that would be a large performance hit - you'd have to upload the sound to everyone as you play it - it'd kill your upload and they'd most likely time out with a fair amount of people on the server.

Oh ok and thanks for the fast reply but for the mean time i just put the folders into the documents folder and finds them fine but any way you can add an add folder to playlist option for faster music adding

Oh found a nifty fix for the my music problem if you delete the my music made by windows and remake it by adding new folder and name it my music windows will still notice it as my music but musex will still see it

Craptube always degrades video and sound quality when you upload a video to there, so most every video has some degradation.

Veoh doesn't do that so if people started uploading there, it would be at whatever resolution it was recorded at.

Hold on a sec!

Visualizations?
Avi and Mpeg movies?
This is a media player in a GAME!

I can understand playing music in-game (we all do that) but surely while PLAYING GMOD we have more interesting things to be looking at than a movie or a visualization!

Get some perspective here and think how you would actually use this - I use it to play music in the background while building or RP'ing or on HL2 Campaign etc. I DON'T want some music video or spectrum analyzer waveform popping up distracting me!

However, here is an idea - can support for Shoutcast radio streams be included?

I agree with this, if you going to add processor intensive features such as this, the least you can do is have a way to toggle them off, I'm all for playing music in my games but I don't want extra slowdowns or distractions due to features that really shouldn't be in a media player for a game.

What do you mean popping up distracting you?

You only see visualizations if you have the window open, and you can turn them off anyway. Your whole point is invalid.

However, I too would like Shoutcast support. I have a few favourite stations.

Actually you missed the point Stylus. (And Xplodzion added a point I missed :P)

Visualizations (and movie playing support) do not belong in an in-game media player at all - your attention should be on the game, and the processor ticks should be dedicated to the game - not on some wavegraph calculations. The ability to disable the vis is appreciated, but does that stop calculating the waveforms as well? And I still believe the feature doesn't belong in a in-game player at all anyway.

The visualizations are just a novelty. You don't have to have them enabled, but we are allowing it to be possible so people with no programing experience can use their Lua knowledge to create visualizations...

It would be interesting to see what people in the community come up with and release.

Mine doesn't seem to want to play nicely. I've installed it to the addons folder, clicked the batch file, it worked up until ingame. I try on of my songs (mp3 format) and it doesn't work at all. I try an mp3 and all i get is

Code:
MXPlayer: Failed to render file.
MXPlayer: Failed to set current position.
MXPlayer: Failed to render file.
MXPlayer: Failed to set current position.
MXPlayer: Failed to render file.
MXPlayer: Failed to set current position.
I tried the default "musex.wav" thing which it came with (found it on the desktop) and it played that no problems.

Yea, when I have a really long list and I have it on shuffle, it will give me this about 60% of the time until it finds the next song, which is almost in a pattern, and can be predicted half of the time. :(

Other than that, this addon rocks!

I'll update the module to return an error code for that. But if it fails to render the file, that could mean one of many things.

The first one that comes to my mind is that you don't have the proper filters to play the file.

We may add support for SHOUTCast. It'll require some additional steps that normal audio files do not, code wise.
