Name:
Tiled Building Blocks

Version:
2

Description:
Various Tile Material Building Blocks

Requirements:
Purchased Garry's Mod

Download:

Various useful building blocks I made to add more available variety to construction.

Note: This is now included in the PHX3 SVN, So you only need update that if you use it, See here

Important: If you have the old version of this, delete your old 'Tiled' spawnmenus (the ones without V2 at the end).
Example:

Note: I managed to break the 'ghosts' from adv duplicator, stacker etc.
Exctract this patch after installing V2 to fix:

New in version 2:
A selection of 2D and 3D triangles
Some spheres and cones
Hollow sphere parts
1x1 and 4x4 pipes in varying lengths/segments + bend piece.
Some 2x2 pipe pieces (T Section, + Section, Lower poly 'square' corners )
A few previously missing sizes of blocks (05x05, 075x075)

Huge variety of sizes (every plate from 1x1 to 8x8 including half and quarter width, and even 16x,24x and 32x)

Made to the same scale as PHX blocks for compatibility.

Simplified models/collision hulls on curved pieces should allow more of them at once (Though the tubes etc won't roll as well as the PHX ones)

The texture and color can be changed with the tools under the render section if you're unhappy with the light grey tiled look. I chose tiled because the walk sound is quieter than plastic and metal, and I made it slightly darker to help people with bloom on.

The addon includes a window texture, so most of the blocks can be turned into windows with the material gun (It looks simplistic, but is recognisable as a basic window)

Spawnmenu Categories:
Tiled [Cuboids] - Mildly disorganised, but many sizes/shapes of cubes
Tiled [Thin] - Plates and tubes live here; Most useful category.
Tiled [RareSized] - Half sized, Quarter sized, Three Quaters sized and the 16, 24 and 32 sized plates. Also 'thin' sticks.
Tiled [Misc] - Geometric Shapes, Plates with circular hole, and a few oddities like stairs.
Tiled [Triangles] - 2D and 3D triangle pieces + Ramps

V2 Thanks to:
Tanker - Wrote a customized QC application to speed up the compile process
Anyone who kept nagging me to add the pieces you see in V2

V1 Thanks to:
Phoenix Storms model pack and anyone who gave ideas; I wouldn't have known where to begin without either.

Recommended Smartsnap 1.0.0 Settings: 11.862 minimum distance between snappoints, maximum snap points as many as you want (64 to get all lines on an 8x8 plate/cube)
Recommended Stacker Settings: '-0.5' Offset X (forward/back), stacking relative to 'prop'.
Recommended Easy Precision settings:11.8625 non-percent nudge distance, 0 offset
Note: Numberwangs seem to 'forget' digits sometimes, best to doublecheck the long decimals each time you start gmod.

Installation: Unzip the download to your addons folder.
These are serverside, so ask the server owner if you want to use these multiplayer and the server doesn't have them.

Cool.
Aren't all models serverside?

Can't wait to make stuff.
Did you test it with the stacker tool? PHX gets unbearable lag when you have the transparent 'ghost'...

All models are required serverside, but just stating for anyone new.

Just tested stacker with phx plastic, phx metal, one of mine and a cargo container; I can't really tell the difference. I tested with smartsnap off, as there's a bug with the GUI it uses which does cause fps drops every second or so.

I have a pretty high spec computer, so I'm not the best one to test. I did try and make my models with low end comps in mind though. I'd be glad if someone with a lower-spec computer could do a comparison between this, phx, and similar sized hl2 models.

I made sure the texture on mine is only tiled once per 1x1 phx sized surface, where as on the phx plastic textures are tiled 2 by 2 in the same 1x1 area.

Perfect! This is just what I've been waiting for since the release of PHX - Something with simpler collision models (less laggy) and more pieces to choose from.

HOLY CRAP. GODLIKE.

This has been long due. I wouldn't mind if you made them a bit prettier. I happen to know about giving models multiple skins and could help you add skins to all the models, though that'd probably make the spawn lists even more difficult to navigate. (Thanks to Garry's Skin thing.) Still, either way, this is beyond perfect. Excellent work.

Wait, have you done any LOD with this? That'd be the only thing that could make this more awesome.

EDIT:
Wait, no reason why you couldn't just make some more textures and add them to the material tool. Would serve the same function.

I may add LOD models at some point, like squares instead of cuboids for the flat panels if possible, though short of culling the entire model (Which I may do for the smaller pieces), the improvement between 1 large surface + two smaller edge surfaces, and just the large surface wouldn't be amazingly impressive.
I'm certainly thinking about adding LOD models to the tubes/curves, though my first priority is to add more types to the set.

I came to the same conclusion with materials and decided that since there was already some very good ones in the PHX pack, I would only include a minimal amount to keep the filesize down. (more of the PHX ones like the inside vent or metal dome can easily be added to your material gun by adding to the list that comes with PHX2 or this pack;
try it out manually by typing 'material_override phoenix_storms/bluemetal' in console, providing you have the phx pack, to change the current material gun texture. )

I don't want to just use the Phx textures. I'd like to have a plethora of other interesting textures to use. (And I don't care so much about filesize myself. Shouldn't really be a problem though.)

About the stacker lag.

It may just be a bug on my PC. But it only happens with PHX stuff. All HL2 models of any size shape or form are A-OK. But PHX gives me the truly epic lagz.

This just might be as good as phx but this pack look like it maby has more verities of blocks.

Edit:

I would like to see more tubs or cylinder for gun barrels and maby make some custom props like 1/4 life did, ya know like the bombs, and the barrels, ect.

O! O!, make some weaponry like tank guns and rocket pods! :4chan:

Oh my god, THANK YOU! Finally! A way to get more original contraptions and such out of creative Gmod people! No more bland PHX stuff. (squares, circles, and triangles. ugh!) Whoo! More originality! You should be getting paid for this. :)

Edit: Oh, and thanks for making it PHX compatible. No, i don't TOTALLY hate PHX. :) OH! and I also thank you for making it a REASONABLE file size too. This really helps us people with limited bandwidth (unlike PHX, lol.)

This pack is worth it more then 100%, maybe consider unifying the model names to be either phx, or your scale, melding both makes it confusing, and the pictures kinda mix me up, besides that though, it looks, and works great. As said before, a 1x1 tube and mini/macro square ducts would be greatly appreciated.

a [less then 1] x 2 tube would also be cool for a limited number of uses. And possibly crossbar cages for the tubes, like the phx glass circle sides, but without the glass.

Surely the average post of facepunch can be summed up thus:

Borderline trolling, stating the obvious and a string of superfluous emotes.

Edit two minutes later:
Questions as to why it doesn't work when I put it in my gamemodes, screenshots or lua folder. Rage over my own incompetence aimed at whoever is nearest to me at the time.

Edit a minute after that:
Badly spelled sucking up to OP in the vain hope it'll make people pay attention to me.

I'm not using a custom scale; I try to keep models a multiple of the phx 1x1 size of 47.45 units. (with plates being 3 units thick.)
The only exceptions that come to mind are the tubes' thickness, which is slightly under 3 units in the phx pack. I've decided to make mine exactly 3 units so they fit to plates on the inside as well as the outside.
Currently the pentagon is 1 phx in radius at the points by mistake, and will be fixed to be 1 phx for the side lengths if I can.
The widths of the tubes in the Misc section are also not constant 3 units; I'll be addressing this when I add more cones etc.

Strange as it seems fine for most people. Are you using an older graphics card or drivers?

For anyone with this material list issue after installing - Delete the 'lua' folder from within the 'TiledBlocks' addon directory. You should then be able to manually select the window material with 'material_override hunter/mywindow' in console.

I'm using GF8800GTX with latest drivers. This problem only started after I installed this addon. It's not a big issue for me tho. I can live with it.

i loved the premade stairs. that saves me 1000 boring hours of making stair cases.
also all your tube stuff is very nice.

dont worry about making new textures, bland is fine. you would have to be a huge minge not to change the texture anyway.

Ok, so I was wrong. There is no 4X4 90 degree tube. However...THERE NEEDS TO BE ONE! I get where you said that you are adding stuff, so my advice is to just make sure that the 4X4 90 degree tube is one of the things you add!

so that the TiledBlocks\ folder you extract (using winrar or winzip etc) is in:
Steam\SteamApps\"STEAMNAME"\garrysmod\garrysmod\ad dons\

To double-check anything in addon format, look for this file:

Steam\SteamApps\"STEAMNAME"\garrysmod\garrysmod\ad dons\"ADDONNAME"\info.txt

If the file's there, the addon should be installed after you next start gmod up.

To those awaiting an update: Progress has been slow, but I will confirm 0.75x flat set, cuboid 0.75 and 0.25 longer pieces, and many triangles will be in next set. I've also got a few more tube pieces done, but not many (it takes me a long time to do the curved pieces :( )

You missed .75 X .75 plates and .5 x .5 cuboids. And 2x domes and 1x tubes would be nice. Also you default weights are a tad low. When you dup a car or bus or anything odds are the constraints see the props default weigh and then any weight adjustments are applied. This is hell for axis and such.

Other then that.. superb job.

I just finished a set of 2x domes and 1x tubes today; I'm planning to release the new props in a day or two.

Models in V2:
thin by thin plates (sticks of varying lengths)
0.75x plates
0.25x1.25, 0.25x1.5, 0.25x1.75 plates
0.5x0.5x cuboids
0.75x0.75x cuboids
2x domes
few more 2x2 pipe pieces (T-section, +-section, half/quarter length)
1x tubes (just straight and a bend for now)
1x1 plate with round hole for 1x tube
variety of thin triangles
variety of 3D triangles (mostly 1x1 to 2x2 sizes sofar)
ramp pieces (plates that fit the long-side of triangles)
fixed size lift (still 2x2 but now walkable)
fixed size pentagon (sides are now 1x not radius)
4x4 tubes in more lengths and 3/4 + 1/2 + 1/4 sections (with 16 sided collision instead of old 12 sided; should be easier to use now)
4x4x90 bend pipe piece and a ball to fit.
2x2, 1.75x1.75, 1x1, 0.75x0.75 balls + something that might pass as a ball at 0.25x0.25
(the 1.75 fits in 2x2 pipe, and the 0.75x0.75 fits in 1x1 pipe)
few small square based cones (yay battlement spikes)
A few sizes of cones

Version 2:

Regarding weights:
I was always finding phx plastic too light and phx metal too heavy, so I picked a value inbetween that could also scale for the smaller pieces; 1 per 0.25x0.25 tile.
I'm not sure I'm familiar with the duplication issue you describe. Constraints re-originate to their current locations upon duplicating, but that's dependant on how the contraption's moved since it was built, not the original weight.
If enough people would like a higher default weight, then I'll see about recompiling all the models for the third installment (If there is one; I'll see how well the second one goes first :)).

Edit: Released version 2.
A few of the textures are slightly wavey; I got a bit lazy towards the end as I had to re-do some pieces up to 6 times. Pentagon is fixed size, but I forgot to re-do the texture, so it looks slightly bigger but it's edges do fit to 1x1 plates.

I also added the circles to wheel tool, and the smallest cubes to buttons menu.

Thanks a lot for the new Version 2! I'm just about to test it out, but I'm wondering if it changes any of the locations of the props in the spawn lists, because I don't want my fun little contraptions made with version 1 of your props being unable to be spawned correctly. Nevertheless, thanks a lot for your updated version and lag-less building pack! 5 stars all the way!

All the old props are included in the same places, so no duplications should have errors from V1->V2.

The only differences are that the 2x2 lift is now walkable, the pentagon edges are 1x long (slightly smaller than it was), and the 4x tubes have slightly better collision models. These will all still paste, just with the updated versions.

Edit:
I just found out; the 4x4 pieces have a better alligned origin now, so they'll be offset by a bit if you load a previous adv dupe with them in :(

Just tested it out, and as you have said, no errors! Thanks a lot hunter! Now I don't have to worry about redoing my helicopter again, ha!

I agree..

That is because he couldn't make 2 new models one day and release them this way. SVN would allow for a model a week or a whole new set to be added at will.

Hunter if you want I will talk to 1/4 life about hooking tiled up inside the phx3 svn. That way you can update whenever you want without constant large revisions and everyone with PHX will get Tiled blocks (which is basically everything missing in phx). I am also going to talk to the guy who did primitive mechanics. See if we can get all the eggs in one uber awesome basket.

_______ Model Pack.

Fill in the blanks.

Sounds like a good idea, though I can't make any promises on lots of regular updates, as I like to play a lot too. The flipside is that I'll be more inclined to make models on the fly as I get annoyed at any that are missing ;).

I've just read the last page or so of the phx thread; I agree with the comments about tiled blocks. It started as an attempt at a PHX tileset with more sizes, like plastic is different to metal. True that it didn't take that long to make the models (once I got started anyway); it just seemed like no-one else was going to soon, so I went ahead and did it.

In answer: Yes, please do talk to 1/4 life about it. It'll help everyone to have all the main model packs in one place. He can also rebrand tiled blocks to be compatable with phx in name as well; I only care about having them available for people to use :)

Excellent. I was worried you would be all. F-PHX his pack sucks.

I will talk to him. Now I just have to talk to joebloom about primitive mechanics.

Please add a 1x1 tube cap, and a sealed cylinder of each size would also be much appreciated.
