Figured if anyone hasn't been on Redmondpie to see the news, the untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 via redsn0w is on schedule and slated for a Christmas Eve release, a little gift for us by Comex.

So if you get the tethered 4.2 jailbreak, then the untethered jailbreak comes out, do you have to re-jailbreak?

May have something to do with this:

Though MuscleNerd himself said not to be too concerned, they may be trying to figure out what's going on there.

You'll probably have to restore then jailbreak.

Upgraded my iPhone 3G to 4.2, tried to jailbreak it using limera1n but I got stuck at the "in DFU mode...wait", had to use TinyUmbrella to get it out of DFU Mode, what did I do wrong?

    Edited:

Jailbroke it using redsn0w instead, works fine now.

So I restored my iPhone 3GS to 4.2.1 and JB/Unlocked it. Then I realized that it has to be tethered to reboot. :C

Now I want to revert back to 4.1 but I keep getting errors (1015). I'm using iTunes 9 and tinyumbrella to help with the restore. Any ideas?

    Edited:

    I think I did it.

    RedmondPie posted:
Last month, The iPhone Dev-Team released an Ultrasn0w update which enabled iPhone 3G and 3GS users to unlock their devices on iOS 4.2.1 by permanently (for now) upgrading it to iPad’s baseband 06.15.00. Rumor has it that there is soon going to be a way for iPhone 3G and 3GS users to downgrade the baseband back to the original 05.15.04 which ships with iOS 4.2.1 for these older devices."

4.2.1 seriously helped my battery life. My iPhone has been on for about 16 hours and only lost about 10% of it's battery. Used to be about 50-60% would be gone.

Getting an iPad for Christmas with 4.2(.1?) Firmware, but I don't think the Christmas JB will be out. MuscleNerd and p0sixninja got in a fight, and I think comex emailed SHAtter to Steve Jobs (sjobs@apple.com).

I'm not sure on what the deal is though.

    Oh, it was leaked.

Apparently you can't update with this new baseband, you need to use custom IPSW's or something.

Hi guys. I recently jailbroke my iPhone 4, 4.2.1 firmware. After a while the 3G disappeared even though all my other friends' iPhone 4s had 3g, so I decided to restore my iPhone. Put my phone into recovery mode and restored from the 4.2.1 firmware that I had used to jailbreak my phone, but got an error 1015. Now my phone is stuck in recovery mode and I can't boot it up anymore.

Using TinyUmbrella doesn't work because the phone just exits recovery for ~1 minute and after that it goes back into recovery mode again. I'm really scared that I've given myself a $400 paperweight - Could someone help me?

It's impossible to brick it. Put it into DFU mode and restore.

    Jailbreak. As for apps:
    OpenSSH
Winterboard (if you really want it too look different)
    SBSettings
Other misc. tweaks. Check youtube and browser for top Cydia apps and such.
Oh, and emulators, they're always fun.

You don't need OpenSSH technically, if you can find a working MobileTerminal and get a graphical program for browsing your phones file structure you can do it without installing OpenSSH.

But it can be useful at times.

Though I hear that is really good I would prefer a jailbreak app that shows the entire filesystemand supports syntax highlighting.
