I've owned several cars made in the 80s, didn't have many problems. Even with less reliable cars like the '85 LeBaron GTS (2.2 turbo, bad about leaking a lot of things and timing issues, along with head gaskets. I had none of these.) The alternator went out in it once. That was the only problem I ever had, and that was after getting it back from my friend.
My '82 Corolla I bought for $150, delivered to me from a place 2 hours away. Put gas in it and a hot battery, blew air through the fuel line to break the fuel pump loose, bam. It ran ever since. And that thing even had ice cold A/C. I sold it for $500 a while later after getting it back from the same friend who fucked my LeBaron's alternator.
My '88 Lancer that has 96k on it, runs and drives. It's got a front seal leaking but it has NEVER let me down. One day I snapped the accessory drive belt at the beginning of a two hour drive, it also drives the water pump. It still didn't overheat. It's a fucking miracle.
Tons of others. Old cars were just built better. Excluding some.
The Cadillac Cimarron was shit, comparing it to other cars of that era is like comparing the 2008 Zastava Koral to a 2008 Cadillac CTS-V.

My 87 RX-7 is pushing close to 170k miles and the only problems I'VE had with it in the short time I've owned it is a bad battery, bad oil, and bad coolant. So i guess my other post was a lie. Sorry.

Those are all general things, it happens on newer cars too.

How is it you always end up blowing up part of your coolant system before a trip and your cars still manage to survive?

I'm not an idiot, pretty much the only explanation. I know how to save a car.
I've never actually had to stop driving a car because it was undriveable (i.e. destroyed engine, transmission, wrecked). Never wrecked a car, never had a flat tire, never broke down somewhere that I couldn't fix what was wrong and go on or hobble it to the nearest safe place and fix it.
I'm generally the guy who treats his car very well, and although I do tend to accelerate quickly and spin wheels every once in a while, I keep it safe and secure.
Also, every single day I open my hood and check everything in my engine bay. It's a morning or noon ritual.

My transmission blew out because the previous owner didn't adjust the TV cable correctly, and when i got my hands on it, the tranny was already fucked, so no use holding back. Drove it till third gear smoked. And my rear end seal... well the truck is 40 years old
.
And i drive the hell out of it. She loves it. She also hates going below 45, i know because she acts pissy. My truck has a personality, and thankfully it's just like mine- speed demon. I love knowing my 4000 lbs brick can keep up with most 4-bangers. Sorry i just like to talk about how much i love this beast.

Right, same truck different grille. My bad. Trust me, I mean no disrespect, I know how it is to love a vehicle like you do. I myself have a Chevy truck, it's a 1964 Chevy fleetside. When my grandpa passed he passed it down to me. It's sitting out back right now with a Pontiac 455 in it. Or maybe it's an olds motor... I forget, I don't touch it often. I'm afraid. My grandpa bought it new in '64 and I don't want to ruin it.

My 69' GMC 1500, ignore the dented fender this picture is over a year old and that has since been repaired. Owned this truck since i was 15 (25 now) was my first vehicle and it will be buried with me when i die, has a worked over 350 thats pushing 400hp and a built TH400 to back it up and a shmexy 4/6 drop. This truck even got me my first girlfriend even though she turned out to be a loony bish.

It was this or an S2000 and it was my wife's turn to pick. But it's one fun ass car, and the S2K has pretty much zero elbow room. However I did like the drop top on the S2K, but again was scared by people in the downtown area on the streets during a test drive with the top down. :P
I had picked the last few cars, 03 Mini Cooper S, 05 Legacy GT Limited and 08 WRX Hatch to name a few...

I mean holy feck you and i even have the same story. I've had mine since i was 13, 17 now, and this thing will not be taken from me, ever. I love it, they're such lovable trucks. (except yours is a long bed...)

Im not big on the long bed either but there are plans in the works about a bed bob and frame chop, or i have a friend who has a stepside bed off of a 68' chevy i could get for $200 but we will see....and your truck is sexy as hell, need to get my hands on some chrome bumpers!
Something funny about my truck, it has cost me a girlfriend haha although she was a bitch and pulled one of those "its the truck or me!" guess what i picked.....

Yup, truck has had alot of friends help out on it and most importantly my Dad and brother...plus i have gotten a shit load more pleasure from building and driving it than that chick ever gave me haha.

Yeah, these things are very satisfying to own and work on, and parts are cheap as hell compared to other older cars.
