Spiral Knights is an up and coming Free To Play MMO.
It is kinda like many slashers where you go in and clear dungeons, except multiplayer, and more in-depth (kinda). It's like Four Swords, in a sense.
There are a bunch of monsters to fight (Slimes, fox things, statues that shoot fireballs), along with puzzles as well (Hitting a switch
)
You can team up with your friends or random people, and go into dungeons and its many levels, making Crowns (The in-game currency), and leveling up your weapons.
In a dungeon, in order to descend to another level, or to ascend back to the ground level, you must have Energy, which you can acquire by slowly getting it over time, paying money for it, both in-game and out game.
Energy is also used in crafting weapons, armor, and guns.
Did I mention this game has swords AND guns? (and bombs too)
Didn't think so.
You are also available to create Gates in the Arcade, which every town has. Gates are pretty much entrances to Dungeons. You create them by putting Minerals into them, which you collect in Dungeons.
It'd be better if I let the Wiki explain how the system works:
A gate first appears in The Arcade with a countdown timer; typically this has a value from 3 to 5. Every two days, all gates count down by one; if a gate reaches zero, a Dungeon is built. The leftmost gate is removed, and a new, empty gate is cycled in on the right. According to the developers, the initial color/symbol on a gate has no bearing on the levels that will be generated; this is purely an artistic embellishment that makes it easier to distinguish between gates. Once a gate is gone, the unique set of levels with it also disappears; even if the same color/symbol pair appears again, the levels within that gate are determined purely by the minerals deposited.
The replacement of old gates is controlled by The Clockworks, and is outside the influence of the knights.
The knights do have the ability to control the Dungeons that are built; different minerals will generate different types of levels. The minerals that are added, and the way that they are added will affect both the number of levels at each floor, the type of floor, and the depth of the dungeon.
The developers also have the ability to lock gates into producing a particular type of level- this is sometimes done to encourage testing of a level type or boss, and is rarely announced in advance.
In the beta, you could get Crowns by donating minerals to a dungeon. The next day, you would receive an amount of Crowns for your donation. In the full game however, you receive Crowns by just donating your minerals. It is unknown to me right now if you still receive Crowns everyday.
Also, The Clockworks is the Story Dungeon, which Spiral Knights is based around of. It is responsible for moving levels around inside the dungeons found below each gate, as well as constructing gates and dungeons when minerals are put inside new gates before they open.
You are also avaible to create a guild, which is what it sounds like. You get your own chat, along with a base that only guild members can enter.
It costs an expensive amount of Crowns and Energy to create one, though. (1,000 crowns, 500 CE)
You are able to choose what your character looks like when you first start, although the selection is small, and they all have the same stats.

Latest patch notes (7/6/11)
ew Boss Stratum:
Within the depths of Tier 2 a new gremlin weapons facility has been discovered, The Ironclaw Munitions Factory. Intel from Spiral HQ has confirmed that under a direct mandate from the Crimson Order, gremlin engineers have begun developing a weapon of incredible power. Known only as 'Project Roarmulus,' this weapon has been designed with the sole purpose of destroying Haven!
Knights are ordered to infiltrate this harrowing complex of devious destructive devices and put an end to 'Project Roarmulus' as well as recover a recon module of the Alpha Squad. Take heed though, gremlins don’t exactly believe in a ‘safe’ work environment.
Survive this deadly complex and earn your Bark Modules as you'll find that Brinks has a new selection of 2* items available for trade. These include:
- The Pulsar, an experimental energy gun that shoots bullets that grow stronger as they travel
- The Catalyzer, a gun whose regular shots can be combined with its charge shots to create a powerful explosion
- Quicksilver Mail and Helm, armor created from the mercurial quicksilvers, capable of resisting shock
- The Static Capacitor, a bomb that creates a shocking field of electricity
All of these items can be further upgraded through 5* provided you acquire their recipes from Basil.
