began writing a thrifter's guide to buying cameras and getting into photography, and it's expanding rapidly into what I could only assume will become a novel of a blog post or thread. I think it may be worth making it into footnotes for release, and moving to small published e-book or do what the local photographer told me to do and pursue doing small seminars at the local civic center and such.
I can tell EVERYBODY about the fun of buying a good handful of 50mm 1.8's!
as a side note to the book thing, I'm already in good standing with Focalpress with the book I worked on with my mom. I'd rather it be a local talk or something though, I don't think my experience is quite publishable yet, though I've seen some rather mediocre books on photography in many forms, so I gotta wonder.

talked a bunch with trogdon on facebook tonight. got into a bit of a side-track with old rangefinders, particularly the Clarus model MS-35 I had picked up at goodwill for ten bucks.
Turns out, the lens on it is apparently rare or something. There's an f/2.8 going for $70 on ebay but I can't for the life of me find anything on mine, which is a solid f/2
I can hold the lens separately and take pictures on my d7000, but because its focal plane is a lot closer to the lens (due to it being meant for a rangefinder, not SLR), I can only get macros with it.
If it's worth something, I'm afraid the price may get a dent in it due to the fact that the lens has been treated like shit. The front element is scratched all to hell, as if it was stored in a bin full of iron wool or something.
Still pretty cool and you can't notice it with an open aperture, but light caught on it seems to be a problem at f/16.
not sure what to think, and google's just turning up a slew of f/2.3 enlargers and f/4.5 135mm lenses when searching for the raptar. The only place I've actually seen the raptar f/2 2INCH(50mm) is in the example picture from my original post about it. Hrm.
Looks very good and it's the "rarer" and older SSC version with the breachlock mount.
Performance should be quite good; at least better than my 600mm f/4.5 because this one has the UD element in it.

EDIT: No the 800SSC does not have a UD element in it, it has a element less than the 800L version.

I don't own that particular model, but i have the NewFD version that is lighter and the coating is SSC (every newFD lens except the 50 1.8 had a SSC coating, the 50 1.8 had SC coating).
But do keep in mind that i don't have that EdMika adapter yet and i am using a converted EF 1.4x teleconverter. So the results i got from the lens were some unsharper than i would use it without the 1.4x extender and just with the edmika adapter.

The detachable lenshood is designated as a extension hood (for whatever reason that is).
Sure it does look awesome when both lenshoods are on the lens, but i don't really know if it serves a purpose of having both hoods extended.
anyone good at microphones? looking at the rode videomics. what exactly is the difference between the pro version? i noticed some difference in sensitivity and weight, but the pro version is almost twice as expensive as the regular. and it comes with a dead cat. is it worth the price ?

Got a canonet 28 from my neighbor yesterday and i thought that it would be a good first film camera (had been aiming for a canon A-1 or AE-1 but what the hell, free is great ). Seemed to be in pretty good shape so i bought a 200iso roll of film and a 625a battery. Ran into some trouble with the battery though, seems like it doesn't fit (it is a bit loose) or the connectors are too corroded, but they seemed fine. Any tips on either how to fit the battery better (cover it in aluminum?), another kind of battery or how to clean your connectors? Perhaps there is something else that causes it?
I knew I wasn't the only person who looked on the Goodwill website, much better deals then on Ebay some times.
what are some good average priced camera bags? something that is fairly small, looks good, and doesn't really look like an obvious camera bag.
otherwise the lowepro slingshot is small and portable, but it's obviously a specialty bag. Kind of looks like those water backpacks for bikers so if you dress right it'll blend in as a big sack o' water

i'm pretty sure it does void warranty, according to the magic lantern faq? still no one has ever had any problems with it but it still doesn't feel safe for some reason
lowepro bags are shit imo, get something like a billingham if you want a quality bag that doesnt look like a camera bag
magiclantern shouldnt void the warranty iirc its loaded from the memory card, once you remove the card they probably cant tell without a detailed inspection that it was ever loaded
It's funny how many I saw while I was in Italy. A group of Asian tourists passed by me in Florence and this one guy in the group literally did not stop while taking photos, he kept at a steady pace while snapping 10 photo bursts everywhere he went.
What type of stabilizers do you guys use if any for video shooting? I looked around a little bit but I couldn't find anything of quality without breaking my bank.
To clarify, I'm talking about the handheld stabilizers you can walk/run around with and have like no shaking.
I've seen some people use home made ones though, that were literally just a metal tube with a 1/4 inch screw at the top, and a steel weight at the bottom. The new low center of gravity and increased weight made it much easier to hold steady, and got rid of a lot of small vibrations.
The Flycam Nano looks like the one to get if you're looking for something that is actually going to give very good stabilization. If you get lucky you can find one cheap on Ebay for around $120-$130.
or if your tripod is heavy enough you can hold it by the panning handle, i've done that with mine to get steady shots with a 55mm on my nex. which is a tiny camera and normally everything is shaky on it.
Starting to think that somethings wrong with my 1100D since all of my latest photos turned out really "bad in blackness". It looks really rough and not as smooth as it should. It's hard to explain, but take a look at these and zoom in and you will see it. They were taken in either RAW or highest JPG format, and the first two with 400 ISO and the third with 3200.

It's an effect called image noise.
You'll tend to see it in anything above your base ISO, but on some cameras, it's noticeable (barely) even on the lowest ISO.
Since you have a 1100D, which is entry level, high ISOs get very noisy.
If you want smoother blacks, shoot at ISO 100, but noise isn't the end of the world. I've seen hundreds of great images with visible noise. Just because an image isn't technically perfect, it doesn't mean it's not artistic. You can get great results with any DSLR, even entry level DSLRs from the first generation of DSLRs.
