So I decided to give Primus a listen today, and the suddenly this:
What the shit Elephant Talk!
So I decided to give Primus a listen today, and the suddenly this:
What the shit Elephant Talk!
Holy shit!!
Holy shit, that sounds almost identical.
I wonder if I will ever run out of awesome Prog Rock bands to discover.
Edited:
Another Primus song:
YYZ, what the shit is going on here?
Oh god
Anyone know any other "simplistic" prog albums like Dark Side of the Moon, those kind of true deep meanings with them :smug:
Simplistic?
A small amount of time signature changes and that kind of stuff.
Wrong thread then!
Nah just joking![]()
Compare King Crimson's Red and Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here albums to Dark Side of The Moon.
Those were musically more complex but lacked the "deep meaning" and didn't make you feel like they wanted you to. Makes sense.![]()
Pros and Cons is fairly simplistic as far as progressive albums go
True that. But it's still Floyd.
I haven't heard Amused to Death yet, is it any good?
It's a very thick album. Not one that you can really have playing in the background.
As in requires your full attention or simply it being outlandish to the point that he explodes.
It requires your attention. Musically it's pretty tame.
Does have a lot of parts of the same song scattered all over it. On The Wall it was okay but here I think he got a bit obsessed. :3:
that's pretty much the main criticism behind prog, the idea that it was complex for the sake of complexity and lacked meaning
True, but then why is Dark Side of The Moon so celebrated then? :psyboom:
crossover success
it's still cool to claim to be influenced by dark side of the moon, but it most definitely is not cool to claim influence by yes or jethro tull.
And King Crimson. But they didn't gain as much success at the time as they should have.
Define meaning.
Edited:
Are you saying that music should have a lyrical meaning behind it all?
Don't war. It's thisispain, he pretty much says stuff he doesn't truly mean :smug:
well even though i am very vocal in my dislike for prog rock *places finger under nose and huffs*, i am 100% certain there would be no math rock if it wasn't for the super inventive guitar styles on discipline, and there wouldn't be any post-rock if it wasn't for robert fripp's incredible fuck-you-i'm-gonna-do-brian-eno-shit-instead-of-a-solo
Edited:
plus fripp said he loves punk and nirvana so i don't know what to believe
You should try his duet albums with Brian Eno. They're some really droney, experimental stuff.
Although listening to a bit of their last album, it seems more accessible than the deep stuff.
hahha i'm like the biggest eno fan ever
i already have them all, on CD and vinyl :smug:
though i don't have their new one i think, isn't it fairly recent?
That one.
It's a lot less dronier than their previous work but I haven't listened to it all.
Edited:
oh they did another one after that too, but not sure what that's like.
Still got these bands in my "listen to" list. Which should I go for next?

Marillion
Shub-Niggurath
Jethro Tull
Egg
Caravan
Gentle Giant
Procol Harum
Solaris
Uops why did I rate you funny
You've listened to Aqualung yeah?
Nope. Shockingly, I haven't listened to Jethro at all yet.
Get Aqualung and Thick as a Brick first. Those will give you a clear idea of what they're about.
It's funny, because Jethro was just trying to make fun of prog rock, and ended up making the biggest prog rock album of all time.![]()
What, was Thick As A Brick like a parody or something?![]()
Yeah, Anderson says he tried to sound like Yes and ELP.. you know try and deliberately be pretentious which they didn't think they were... and they pulled it off so well that it's seen as their best work.

The video is a bit messed up though.
Stand Up and Stormwatch are by far the best Tull albums. Also, if you enjoyed Thick as a Brick, check out 'A Passion Play' aswell. It's a bit more of a serious attempt at a concept album rather than the proggy parody of Thick as a Brick.
Gentle Giant are also awesome! Listen to their album 'Octopus' first.
THEEEEY'RE COMING OVER CHARATON BRIIIIIIIIDGE
/c
Procol Harum! also caravan

Chris Squire's album Fish Out Of The Water is quite amazing. If you haven't listened to it you should, it has no electric guitars, the only guitar is bass guitar.
Every song has a great hook and melody, with amazing instrumentations.
