Totally coming into this thread unprepared, but I'm gathering this game will (if not is) be everything the game Infinity: The Quest For Earth was supposed to be before becoming vaporware?
Just to be clear, Infinity is not vaporware. It's still under development, one of the developers is still talking actively about it on his twitter.

    http://twitter.com/#!/inovae_keith

    Keith on Twitter posted:
@Axez94 We're trying to get a release of the engine this year. Game will be sometime after that.
That was posted 4 days ago.

    Also, WIN

    http://en.spaceengine.org/forum/21-514-1

I asked for that sometime last year, I don't remember the response.
Holy fuck, I remember thinking about how awesome it would be for the game to have a sky box feature.

My hammer maps won't have shitty default sky boxes anymore.

That height maps thing also sounds awesome for use in games that accept them.

Infinity team aims on first finishing engine (i heard they found some investor or companies interested in licenses) ...

then the game (Quest for Earth) ... originally was the game priority

while Space Engine is primary focusing on the engine itself ... and maybe later game(s)

What are your specs? Space Engine needs a fairly decent computer with a good GPU.
I'm using a 560 Ti, the graphics should not be a significant problem. My framerates are relatively good.

That should be good enough. It was running perfectly on my Q6600 at 2.4 to 3GHz and it's running great on my i5 right now. Maybe take it to the official forums? SpaceEngineer should be able to help.

This runs perfectly on my laptop with an i5 2410 and a GT 525.

So, my conclusion is that this game just sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. A result of it being in a stage of heavy development.

I was looking around the Large Magellanic Cloud, about on the edges, and I found this beauty.

    Calid Oceanica

Oceanica facing the main sequence star, moon in background.

Higher is better, it's recommended to use LOD 0 to fly around and then set to LOD 2 when taking screen shots.

    Edited:

Also, I haven't seen it posted here but there's some screenshots from the test version the dev's currently working on.

    Guess what.

Just dropping by to say that the developer has begun even more work on 0.96.
In addition to procedural galaxies, redshift, spaceship support, some other small additions and bug fixes, terrain is also being improved.
    0.95:

    0.96:

Also, to the person above, that shadow bug happens when the engine deals with shadows from really far distances (ie a planet casting a shadow on another planet, or a binary star being hid by its companion star)

Those aren't my pictures, 0.96 isn't out yet. Those are the developer's pictures. I use LOD 0 myself, and it only take 2-3 seconds at the most for a scene to load.

Ah ok, I know 0.96 isn't out yet I venture on the official forum once in a while.

I've got a HD 7850 OC'ed 1200/1475 and a 3570k, on LOD 0 it does load pretty quickly but when I try it at LOD 2 it still takes a good 20 - 30 seconds to load.

Yeah, don't use LOD 2. IMO that should only be used for taking screenshots. You seem to have a much better system than me (6950 800/1250, 2500k 4.5GHz)

The UI is getting an update as well.

Here's a full list of changes so far:
    SpaceEngineer posted:
    Changes and additions:

-A new coordinate system and camera
    -The Map of the Universe
-The console, various console commands allow you to change settings, there are also commands that duplicate the functions of the autopilot
-Console commands can be executed from the file - it is possible to create a scripts that controls the flight
-Updated catalog of dwarf planets, exoplanets, nearest stars, etc.
-Some new galaxies models, new textures for some Solar system bodies
-A count on the number of planets with life has been added to the selected star's information table
-Significantly improved performance in dense regions of galaxies (the nucleus and spiral arms)
-In the Orbital review mode (Right-drag) rotation is always going around the current object, but not around selected one
-Showing vectors of a planet: its own X axis, the direction to the parent body, and the barycentric velocity
-Collision detection of camera with all planets
-Spacecrafts: motion control, gravity forces, collisions with planets
-Procedural galaxies with large-scale structure of the universe and the redshift effect
-Supporting of the indoor scenes in the *.map format ("Radiant" editor of games using the Quake engine) for buildings and ship interiors (maps are available as "scenes" from the console)
-Anti-aliasing on the border of the cloud layer on the planets
-New forms of landscape on planets
-Smooth transition between textures of different materials on the surface of the planet
-Changed the algorithm for calculating landscape level of detail - detail close to the camera is always high (as in LOD 0) for each LOD
    -Exporting of skybox (panoramic screenshot)
-Exporting of procedural textures of planets
-Editor of the procedural parameters of the planet with the script export function
-Optimization of the interface, the active window is moved to the foreground
    -A new interface design
-The "game" style of the Main Menu
    -Various control panels
-Some settings for the Planetary System Browser
-Binding keys and saving them to the config file
-The "Copy" and "Paste" buttons in the Locations menu - for easier sharing of coordinates via the forum
-Supporting for Windows clipboard in the text input fields (Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V), for example, in the Search By Name menu (F3)
-Real brightness of the planets (lighting dependency on the distance to the sun)
-White dwarfs, neutron stars, black holes - isolated and in multiple star systems
    -Binary gas giants
-A new model of the atmosphere with a green hue

    Bug fixes:

-Fixed some bugs in the planetary system exporting code
-Fixed "reddening" of the stars at very high magnification
-Fixed "blueing" of the sun at sunset
-Fixed bug with black spots on the edge of the disk of the planet (including the Planetary System Browser)
-Fixed crashes due to excessive generation of planetary systems in nebulae
-Fixed pulling of camera to infinity at first contact with a planet or a star
-Fixed bug with generation of very small Earth-like planets and moons with the ocean (Terra)
-Reduced the size of impact basins, their generation is suppressed for large Terras
-Fixed extremely dense clouds on Oceanias
-Fixed a bug with the NoPlanets parameter in the stars catalog

Terrain is looking as good as the Terragen program now, and that program used to take upwards of 45 seconds to render a single image, given the quality settings

This is starting to turn into a really badass version of Noctis, hooray
