road riding still doesnt seem a very suitable exercise, your breathing in exhaust fumes for hours. i would say just do whatever your comfortable with, the biggest factors in how far you should ride are your fitness level and the terrain, 20 miles in rolling terrain is a lot different from 20 miles with 20%+ gradients. i do maybe 120 miles a week over 2 days. its worth looking at local cycling clubs imo, they will set a reasonable pace and if you dont drive and have a terrible sense of direction like me its a good way to ride to places without getting lost.

I'm hardly any kind of cyclist so I hope you guys can forgive me for being a dunce.
I'm planning on restoring a 1930s CCM this winter and haven't been able to find a good parts retailer outside of private sales. The local bike shop clerks treat me like I'm crazy when I come in asking if they know where to buy metal CCM fenders or chainguards or whatever. Are there reliable online sources for antique bike parts?
I'll kindly fuck off to DIY if this isn't the kind of thing discussed here.

Pretty bike, take it to a local bike shop that does repairs and fittings, they can help you out.
Especially Mom&Pop type places.

Riding a single speed mountain bike is not nearly as hard as it sounds. You keep up momentum much better than a geared bike.

I don't know of any specific sites, but I do know ebay usually has oddball stuff, just keep watching for what you need. You should first figure out the exact bike year/type to get you started in looking for the right stuff.
It'll most likely be a slow process. If there's a bike museum around your city, you could always go and ask them, or specialty bike shops.

I would personally say think less about the miles right now, and more about trying to sustain an increased heart rate for at least 30 minutes 4 times a week.
Just get on your bike, maybe make a map in your head, or phone, or whatever, and go for a ride. Or go run some errands on bike... As you get stronger you will find you can go further and further in 30 minutes. Eventually you'll increase to maybe an hour ride, or something like that. I usually don't keep track of miles, just time.
Try your best to continually pedal, and keep pushing yourself harder. You'll have to be your own best coach to make any positive gains.
Or like waylander said, a club or group of friends helps a lot.
Don't forget to drink plenty of water. ;)

imo a good way to start is a shortish (<15km) distance ride that goes up hill a lot on the way out then down hill on the return, that way if strength is an issue you get a good workout over a short distance but can still complete the ride, also the downhill encourages you to pedal on the return leg as its fun to go fast.
its a good idea to get a cycle computer though as they are cheap can provide a lot of useful functions and if you do ride alone its easy to set an unsustainable pace without one
unless its the middle of summer i dont really drink that much, today i did 50km (w/1km ascent 1km decent) and my 750ml bottle is still half full, i have a camalbak as well but i only use it if im riding a bike with no bottle holders because the 1.2l capacity is fucking ridiculous and thats the cheapest lowest capacity camalbak
i would seriously suggest looking into a club, membership should be cheap and most clubs atleast in the uk offer more than just a ride on a sunday, for example this month my club has a night at the manchester velodrome, there are monthly meetings some competitions and a christmas lunch, it also offers you a chance to ask more experienced cyclist questions without resorting to the internet.

I'm so fucking proud of myself right now.
Average of 10 mph, which is hardly impressive but considering traffic and hills - not too bad. Fell off once, pulled over into a side street to get my bearings and my jeans caught on one of the back roller wheels, couldn't get my foot off. Only thing damaged was my pride. :3

is that a single day? for a commute to work its a reasonable distance/speed but not very impressive if your distance riding, so far since sunday i did about 120 miles (i didnt go very far monday) with a pace between 10 to 15 mph.
thinking of doing the C2C in 1 day (most people take 2 or more), doing the distance isnt an issue but its logistically awkward as you have to get to the start point and ride the route before the trains stop running if you want to get back home in the same day

That was just pootling about, still, for a novice who's unfit it wasn't bad for 2hours.
However, today I DID commute via bike, 10 miles in 46mins with an average speed of 13mph - considering filtering in traffic, lights and hills, I don't think it was a bad time at all. Considering doing it daily, although it was a pain working an 11.5h shift after that!

Why is it BMX bars are so expensive, all you get is bloody glamroids when you search for them (30" bars) and they cost about £60
I payed 20 for my entire bike because the dunce who had it before got hit by a car and didn't want to repair it.

got clipless pedals/road bike shoes a few days ago. I rode with them for about 20 mins just to get used to them.
hopefully I'll be able to unclip if a car pulls out in front of me

I'd worry more about braking reaction time. Falling over because you made an abrupt stop while you're clipped in is preferable to getting hit by (or running into) a car. A car once turned into me and being clipped in had little effect - popped right out.
Being able to come to an unplanned stop and successfully clipping out eventually becomes second nature. The worst is the first couple of times you go to stop at a light. Inevitably, you fall right over on your ass in front of a bunch of cars.

I own the Via Brera. Not ready to show it, still making it mine. Almost done, at this point its just little cosmetic stuff. I may be making a new front chainring at work. I have one designed up, it's just a matter of getting the code to the machine, not always wanting to stay late at the shop

is the release tension not adjustable? it is on the pedals i use, its nice to have it light but sometimes its too light and you can pull you foot out when riding especially up hill.
i nearly got a bianchi but really they are charging a massive premium just for the name, its about £950 just for tiagra or a veloce mix, i got my orbea with 105 for that from a lbs that deals in bianchi. if you look at builders like ribble and planet x you can get a far higher spec for under a grand, atm planet x have alu frames with sram red for £999

My Bianchi was $750, which I thought was a decent price for a decent bike. Although they are really skimping on their components these days. You get what you pay for.
I bought it as a single speed commuter, and I've really come to like it, although hesitant at first. Later on I will be buying something classic and not just classic looking.

i wasnt just looking at new bikes but all the really nice ones were pickup only at the other end of the country, i wanted to get a geared bike within a month so it was easier to buy a decent new one locally use it for a year or two then maybe upgrade.
what crank/sprocket does your bianchi have tinos? i was thinking of getting a dolan or tiffosi frame and putting a sugino sg75 crank on it, tempting to just reuse my langster frame but it feels heavy after riding aluminium
re: classic frames peugot seem about the most reasonably priced high quality classics, anything with NJS certification has insane prices nowadays, i was looking at a 3rensho "funny bike" track frame and itwas priced at £1500 and the condition was shit

Nothing special, just the cheap FSA Gimondi it came with.
Thought about the Sugino messenger chainring, but like I said, I decided to take on the project of just making my own. Whenever time permits, that is. haha
That steel Langster frame is really classy, you should just run it man, I couldn't imagine a classic steel being much lighter, although I can't say for certain.
Unless you really want a classic, I wont stop you! I want one too. ha

fell over at an intersection today
I was coming up to a red light and tried to unclip, failed, and lost all my momentum and dropped the bike on its left side. luckily just the pedal was scuffed up

in the uk most cyclist stand on there left foot at lights, is it the same in the us or different because we ride on the other side of road? anyway getting to the point set the pedal's release tension for which ever foot you use to stand low so you can get your foot out quickly. the pedals on two of my bikes are a mess because of low speed falls, there's even a couple of scatches on the frames, the cleates are so worn now though and i have the tension set properly so releasing isnt a problem even in an emergency
usually you need something like a 2 or 2.5mm allen key to adjust the release tension

yeah they're adjusted properly. it was my fault for misjudging it and trying to unclip too late.
yes, I always unclip my left foot and put it out when stopped. I know that some people unclip their right foot, but to me that's not comfortable and also it doesn't make sense because you have the chain, etc. all on the right side

Anyway, I understand there are plenty of arsehat police around, I live in London and the Met are a bunch of twunts. I also understand that you should stand up to them.
However, the guy went through a red light in view of a policeman. Guess what? That's an offence that applys to cyclists as well as motor vehicles. All the guys doing is being a dick, there was no need for his behaviour. Fair play he caught the policeman out on his "knowledge" of the law, and highlighted that police DO lie to make things easier for them but he should have just sucked it up and paid the fine or not have done it in the first place.

I think the obvious answer here is he did it intentionally, as he had a camera with him and explained he was a man of the law himself.
He was simply getting a policeman to confront him for a crime, so he could explain how they try to abuse human rights.
And tbh, I run reds all the time, I don't give a fuck. If there's no cars, it's not hurting anyone. Police have seen me do it as well.

when measuring your seatpost height using the heel method should you wear your normal cycling shoe or do it barefoot? i understand it isnt as accurate a method the 109% or holmes method but its the easiest method.

I'd say with the shoes you plan to wear, but I'm no expert, I just get mine close and run it.
