    Guess what turned up today

    2003 Dell Poweredge 2650
    2 x Xeon @ 1.8GHz
    2GB DDR RAM
    4 x 36gb SCSI drives in RAID 5 (100gb usable space)

It sounds like it's about to take off
Lurked repost but I'm getting one of these for free from my highschool cisco networking class. I asked him if I could use it to start preparing for my senior project for next year and he said I can just have it since it was donated and just sits in the corner.

My boss handed me an old 3COM 24port 10/100 network hub. Their Datacenter didn't need it anymore. He was going to throw it out but asked me if I wanted it. I said sure. I'll put it to some use eventually, if not I'll just dump it, no loss I suppose.
Unless you have a use for a hub I would not use it or even keep it around in fear I might use it. They can totally fuck up a network's throughput if they are not setup properly.

    Agreed. Switches > Hubs

Hubs are dumb motherfuckers that receive a packet and then spam it down every fucking port.
Switches do actual switching, so shit goes where it's supposed to, not fucking everywhere.

What is the purpose of a hub? Are they just useless compared to a switch?

They don't have one any more, they have been superseded by switches.

To do the job of a switch before switches became cheap enough

Are they just useless compared to a switch?
    Yes.

Packet sniffing is the only use I can think of now. Otherwise none is my understanding.

hub - receive and rebroadcast, regardless of what it is
switch - receive, try to match destination address, otherwise broadcast
router - receive, route and filter traffic

basically if you use a hub you need better wire shielding since hubs don't watch for collisions, you can end up with a massive packet traffic collision and it can explode your wires and leak radiation poisoning

Currently running a web server on a pentium 4 rig, it's my first server.
I'm also hunting down components for my spare 775 mobo, it'll probably run gameservers.

stick it in a datacenter and use it for gameservers, web hosting, as an email server, FTP
use it as a render machine if you like to make videos

just do not waste such a nice build on a NAS

I am thinking about hosting a TF2 Server

And it is defiantly not small so the price of Coloing it is a bit higher and I currently have no job
Also it is pretty old as it uses RDRAM not DDR

I feel oddly compelled to buy it, but he didn't list a price, how much should I bid?

holly shit! A floppy drive on a pentium 2, now thats super rare!

But it would be a nice novelty NAS server. I have a pentium 2 NAS server and I always liked the CPU on a card thing.
