Um why
If a guy has long hair and dresses in denim and a leather jacket and boots or sneakers and wears band shirts "metal" would be a very spot-on way of describing that imo

Yes, but he means that calling themselves metal and having to tell people they look the part makes them not the part, because they're clearly in it just to say they are as opposed to legitimately in to it.

You have to be able to pull off the long hair look to have it. And if you cant you just end up looking like a basement dweller. Like I used to. Then I got the locks

You don't. Yea dreadlocks are cool but they're a real bitch. And same with the long hair, if you can't pull it off you may end up looking like an idiot. Safe to say that dreadlocks are for surfers, stoners, and South American peoples.

I pull off the long hair fine, and I actually have had dreadlocks before, horribly done ones so they fell apart really fast, and apparently looked good with them, so I don't know.
