Usually they don't. A lot of them don't even seem to have a purpose other than "I'm angry / happy and I'm going to take it out on the city by burning / raiding vehicles / stores."
Even the 1992 LA Riots, which were over the beating of 1 man, killed 53 people, caused a billion dollars and damage, and only ended when the US Military showed up Armed and told everyone it was time to go home.
Sure, there was an investigation into the incident afterward, but the rioting did much more harm than good.

Just read about this. Im on the side of the police, because the bullet fired at the Officer who was saved by the radio made the Police believe he was a threat, and obviously they returned fire instinctively. Its also stupid how the family was up in arms and went to the effort of starting a riot because a complete idiot got what was coming to him.

At the least, it wasn't a riot over sport. They're just stupid; no matter the sport.
Better yet riots started over the protesting of 'extremism' (how can you protest against extremism, really?) The government doesn't have an 'extremism' sector so protesting is a waste of time.
Riots are started by the irrational or narrow-minded.

Seriously, why is anyone siding with the protestors saying it is a good idea to burn cars and burn down business and peoples property?!?! They are protesting over the fact that a man was shot after he tried to shoot some police officers, he pulled out a gun and shot at the police officers, what justice do they want exactly? Commendations to the officers? Good lord Tottenham you must be an low IQ black hole.

I agree with the officer returning fire though - he had the right to self defence and had the duty to remove the threat.

While the intensity of the rioting is fucking stupid, it's good that the people in the UK and France for example still can actually stand up to their government. Don't see this happening in the US, ever.

Londoner here and I am not only furious, but I'm genuinely saddened.
I'm sick and tired of the so called 'black community' blaming the police for everything and anything and using it as an excuse to carry out this feral shit. Your local 'gangsta' shot at the cops so quite rightly, he's going to get shot in return, seriously what is there to criticise? WHAT DID YOU EXPECT THEM TO DO? Being stopped and searched by the police because you're black? The reason for that is that blacks are still a minority in Greater London yet commit a disproportionate amount of violent crime. Are they the only group that commit crime? No, but just as a DVD counterfeiter is most likely to be asian, a paedophile is most likely to be a white male, blacks are statistically most likely to carry out criminal violence. I have yet to see hordes of Chinese or Polish youths stab someone to death because they live in a different postcode or they showed apparent 'disrespect'.
I'm sick and tired of these people. I never had a problem with any group of people before but living in this otherwise great city and being relentlessely exposed for years to their savage behaviour has turned me into a racist and I'm not the only one. When shit like this happens everyone seems to pussyfoot around the elephant in the room and because we aren't allowed to discuss these issues the problem will only get WORSE, exponentially.
I do not want to live in a country with martial law but they should've sent in the military, fully armed, to shoot dead every single one of those disgusting subhuman animals committing these acts of violence. The world would be a better place without them.
