I don't really think 682 is meant to be taken very seriously, he's more along the lines SCPs like the coffee machine. I don't see why everyone's getting worked up about him when you have ones like 56 and 76 still around. I think people just need to extract the arboreal detritus from their posterior cavities.
Yeah, but one thing that makes it special is that it's an aggressive, seemingly simplistic (for the duration of the test, anyway) organism that will always survive. Thus, we can place an infinite amount of stress on it without changing the experiment parameters.

Really, at this point it's just throwing stuff at it and seeing what happens.

Im writing one (or rather, attempting to) but where should I place [DATA EXPUNGED] to give it a realistic feeling? Should it cover names?
It's not so much realism as it is letting the reader fill in the gaps with their own fears. Like, instead of saying "It amputated their legs" you could say "It proceeded to violently [DATA EXPUNGED]"

    Straight from http://www.scp-wiki.net/how-to-write-an-scp
If you need to remove a few words (e.g. names, places, dates), copy the Unicode character █ (U+2588, FULL BLOCK). If you need to cut out substantial sections, use [DATA EXPUNGED].
So basically, like Spycrabz said, it's used to make the reader fill in the information with whatever their twisted mind can come up with.

█ for small things like 'SCP-XXX proceeded to disintegrate ██ D-class personnel before recontainment was possible.'
[DATA EXPUNGED] for bigger things like 'SCP-XXX was found in the [DATA EXPUNGED] Area has now been secured, and access restricted to 05-level approval only.'

[DATA EXPUNGED] is for large segments of omitted text, while black blocks are for small omissions.

Think of it this way: If you were an actual SCP agent editing a paper copy for security reasons, would it be more efficient to meticulously cover the offending content with white-out or turn the container over and pour it on the whole general area? If the former, blocks. If the latter, expunge.

And [REDACTED] should be used for classified or sensitive information, whereas [DATA EXPUNGED] is better suited for gruesome details and the like.

[EXPLETIVE REDACTED] is used for curse words.

There's SCP-198, which gives you a surprise if you stick your hand on it.

It doesn't come off. And it fills with your shit. Quite a surprise when all you wanted was a polystyrene cup.

You know, I wonder why the Foundation never thought of building a gargantuan crusher, using it on 682, and if it survives that (Which is highly likely) then release 173 on the mess that is 682. Apparently, what kept 173 from killing 682 was the difference in size, and that isn't a problem to the foundation when 682 is flat and seriously lacking in eyeballs.

The reason it's not dead is because a dead SCP isn't particularly entertaining.

An SCP that can never die and can beat every single SCP for no apparent reason is even less interesting. Don't make an SCP that the foundation wants to kill, and then complain when people want to kill it, it's dumb.

Oh, well yeah. I dunno, I feel like an SCP should be terminated if the SCP has an in-story reason to terminate it. I mean there's a lot of out-of-character politics that goes on that I hate. If they don't like an SCP they kill it, even if they don't really have an in-story reason to. If they like an SCP, they never kill it, even if they have an in-story reason to.
