Bad reading has nothing to do with an absolutely terrible story.

Let me revise:

Old guy tells kid to take a hike, the kid does so, to some kind of frozen environment, then the old guy becomes a lawyer because he can't farm in the city, then sues the kid who later dies of cancer.

That makes even MORE sense.
