There are a number of other more specialised launchers around too, like Espier Launcher which mimics the iPhone. Of the ones listed, ADW Launcher is probably the most versatile (though I haven't used Launcher Pro so it may be more so), Go is the most polished/smoothest and Zeam is the lightest weight.

All three of these apps are widget based and extremely customisable. mClock and Minimalist Text also have facilities for loading configs, so you can find a lot of prebuilt themes for them floating around.
Web Browsers:
Opera Mobile (free)
Opera Mini (free)
Opera Mobile gives you a full web experience and is recommended for use when you're on wifi. Mini uses some Opera magic to greatly compress webpages and usually directs you to a sites mobile version and is therefore recommended for browsing when you're using mobile internet.
Cameras:
FxCamera (free)
Camera Zoom FX (paid)
Pano (paid)
FxCamera is the Android equivalent of Hipstamatic, CZFX is the best camera app on android and Pano takes great panorama shots.
Other:
Barcode Scanner (free) - great QR code reading app, handy if you download things from XDA regularly.
WidgetLocker (paid) - Lockscreen replacement, very versatile, many, many themes available.
Calendar Pad (free) - ugly but extremely functional calendar.
Jorte (free) - another full featured calendar that's slightly prettier than Calendar Pad but less intuitive.
Dropbox (free) - cloud syncing and storage.
Dictionary.com (free) - Neat little dictionary app.
Epistle (free) - extremely simple plaintext note taking app that can sync to Dropbox.
G-Mon (free) - great Wardriving app.
Google Chrome To Phone (free) - Chrome users only. Send links from your desktop browser to your phone over wifi or data, super handy.
Google Translate (free) - Nifty as fuck.
HandyCalc (free) - The best scientific calculator app on android imo.
Tick! (free) - really simple rotary timer.
SwiftKey X (paid) - Keyboard replacement. I prefer Swype over it, but loads of users swear by Swiftkey's uncanny predictive text.

A friend showed me this app, called Screen Filter.
All it does is make the screen darker. So far, I've found it saves me a ton of battery.

I already talked about Go Launcher briefly in my recommendations, but I should add that the entire Go suite of apps is one of the most cohesive and pleasurable Android experiences I've had. They offer slightly less customisation than other competing apps but they have that 'just work' charm to them. I currently use Go Launcher and a number of their widgets. Go Locker is great free alternative to Widgetlocker, even if it is less customisable. I've previously used Go SMS and it felt like Handcent but less daunting (there's still a good deal of options in Go SMS but nothing like what you get in Handcent). I'd probably be using it now if I wasn't using the custom Motoblur inbox.
I guess for me, Go's app suite strikes the perfect balance between customisation and usability. I can still tweak their apps and themes when I want, but I don't have to sit down for a day trawling through hundreds of different options just to get something how I want.

Also while I'm here, Winter Wake-up is also extremely handy. It's an alarm clock app that checks the weather during the night and will move your alarm earlier (you can set by how much). I cycle in to uni and the roads where I live are just too treacherous to ride on when it gets icy, so I use Winter Wake-up to make my alarm go off 30 minutes earlier, giving me enough time to walk in instead.

I used if for a weeks and it has saved my eyes when I was playing games in the middle of the night or reading some stuff on a black text on white background.
Yup, it's a great app.

Meridian is a good free alternative to Ubermusic. it has a file browser and video support. Hacker Keyboard is a must have.

AdAway is an open-sourced alternative to Adfree Android.
Profile Scheduler is like a lot like tasker, but is free.
Android Lost is an app that runs in the background that allows you to effectively remote control your phone. Have it sound an alarm, even when you're on silent mode. Have it automatically lock your phone with a pin, send a picture of its current location, send GPS coordinates, erase your phone, and more.

It's a barcode scanner. If you scan a product barcode, it will tell you whether or not the company that makes the product supports SOPA. Boycotting made easy.

Holy mother of fuck is it useful. It's a web interface for your phone that lets you conduct SMS sessions, transfer apps/files/contacts etc to/from your phone and all sorts of other useful shit. It also looks awesome. Practically solves the problem of "oh god there's no usb cable".

This is crazy, I like how it even looks like it's its own desktop. It even seems secure enough for a public place, so now I can use my phone as a flash drive without needing my cable. This is incredible.
Though, I have a question: Noscript reports that it needs to run Google Analytics when I'm browsing my phone. Why should it need to do this?

It's even got its own media player! It's almost like I have my own private desktop wherever I go! This is the greatest thing ever.
Only thing I don't like is the window bars.
I'm gonna test this tonight to see how harsh it is on battery life.

Also, this became much less useful to me because on must networks I would use it on there are things in place that are preventing this from working properly.

It's reasonably good on battery, too. I wouldn't be afraid to leave it connected for a few hours while i did work or listened to music.

I downloaded 8tracks the other day to see what it was like.
Fuck if I don't enjoy the hell out of it. Only concern is that there's some issues with the 'Like' function, and you more or less have to follow a DJ to save a list.
I also enjoy SwiftKeyX and Opera Mini.

AirDroid is awful. If you have a large SMS inbox, it will take FOREVER to download all the messages to the browser. And whilst it does, you can't do much else. I think it's some sort of rubbish buffer system.
Other than that it is good.

EverNote - take notes, sync them online to view anywhere. The best note-taking app, ever.
This app allows you to make notes, sync them online, for free, on your phone, tablet, computer and on the Web. You get 60MB of storage per month, you might think that's very little but it's decent as I constantly upload random crap at like the last day to make good use of that 50MB left over. Just saying.

Yes but if you're not new to android, you would save more battery if you know what you're doing. You can turn down your brightness and turn off data by yourself with one press of a button and without an extra app running in your background.

What? I'd suggest doing three things:
1) Only turn on things when needed (GPS, WiFi, 3G)
2) No reception? Turn airplane mode on.
3) Try to minimize the number of apps/services running in the background.

I do this too. My GS2 eats battery like a fat kid in a candy shop in little or no reception areas. I don't bother turning anything else off, screen at max brightness while I'm out, and everything updates/syncs at the shortest refresh rates, happy with the 16 hours of battery it gives me.

My G2x does the same. Spent about 4 hours or so playing GTA 3 while listening to music in the background, battery dropped from 100% to 6%. Noticed I had bad reception so I turned airplane mode on and it just froze on 5% for a good hour or so, it's very surprising how much battery the cell radio sucks up.

Save messages for what reason? If you just want another copy of them and have gmail, SMS Backup+ is good, can save call logs to gmail and calendar too.

You would get kicked out for doing this, of course only if they ask for your ticket and you don't have it. This whole concept isn't that difficult to actually do. Just look at the schedule and plan it out.
