If I was doing it again (which I probably am) I wouldn't go this route. I'd buy some strip wood and glue it all together, would be must faster and easier.

get those honeypot ants bro!
then we can be mates and stuff once i find some?
How do you mean, can you explain a bit more?
Basically in B+Q you can buy strips of wood, really really thin wood, going down to a couple of mil wide.
I'd get some about 0.5cm and some about 1cm, lay them on a bigger part of the wood like this (in profile)
Glue them there then you've got what you would have achieved by routing the wood in about a tenth of the time.Code:_ _ [_]_[]_[_] [ ] [________]
That's actually a quite good idea, why would you do that over routing?
If you were to bump the ant farm would the tunnels all collapse? Is there a way to stop that from happening? Last thing you want is a chilean miner ant simulation.
Yeah if you move it it could collapse, best thing to do is to not touch it. Packing the sand in will cause them to not been able to bury into it.
By doing it with strip wood it'd just be a lot faster than routing. It would technically be weaker - but that doesn't really matter for this kind of thing.
Can you upload more pictures of the colonies?
Add a load more and watch them become a civilization, then get 5 other ones and give them steroids. Watch the 5 invaders attack while the colonies desperately try to defend themselves.
You guys made me remember when i tried to raise moth eggs
One day i had woken up and saw this little pack of eggs layed on my green post-it"oh that's silly, moth must have confused my post-it with a leaf"
then i thought: "oh well facepunch rose over 4 hundred of these, i could keep these guys"
then they hatched and turned out to be case-bearing moth larvae D:
My mother almost killed me, had to hunt them down one by one...
hammer a few small nails through and i'm sure it'll hold up real good (you'd probably need to drill out holes on the strips)
Gonna build a smaller one tomorrow to try out some ideas I've had. Going to make it much thinner, and with glass.
So you gonna get those honey pot ants?
Nope
:( why have normal ants? Ill send you some for xmas?
Send them to me, our cafeteria ran out of those little honey packets.
Any chance you can make some quick clips and blog about them to show how its done?
How's the ant farm Garry?
I'd like to see it with the ants inside. It looks great by the way, and you have a very nice house.
I bought some strip wood to do an experimental glass one today. I'm going to make a smaller one to make sure that the gap between the sheet is the right size. I feel like in the one I made it's too big. Wood came to about £10. I've already got the glass laying about.
I also bought 2 massive pieces of glass from ikea for my next `real` one. They're sold as table tops. This means that they're tough, they won't bend or break. And it was cheaper than the plastic too. £50 each.
I was waiting for a picture to load then I realized it was just your title.
Garry you gave us an pretty boring FP bureau webcam, where is the Ant-Farm webcam?
That vaccum scares the piss out of me
Wow, I just now realized that after reading your post. I feel stupid for waiting each time he posted.
Ant Farm 2.0: http://garry.tv/post/14919450385/ant-farm-2-0
I made a small one, about 2x1 feet.
Was young at that time, so when i didnt see them, i thought they all had escaped.
also, for people in europe: If you don't want to make your own formicarium (that's how it's called, I believe), you can buy lots and lots of stuff from http://www.antstore.net/shop/ , it's a german ant equipment store.
Should put a label on the top of it called "Facepunch in a nutshell"
god damn that's overpriced like hell compared to ANTSTORE
Lasius niger (most basic ant, atleast in europe it is):
ANTSTORE: £ 1.51
antsuk: £8.95
Messor Barbarus:
ANTSTORE: £1.50
antsuk: £9.95
Basically antsuk buys their stuff from ANTSTORE and sell it at much higher prices. Only useful fact is that antsuk has free delivery on orders over £30,-
Edited:
So yeah if you're reading this Garry and haven't bought your new ants yet: you should really check the other store I suggested in my previous post, it's a lot cheaper and also delivers to UK
I bought from antstore originally. The delivery took a week. Antsuk is next day. That's the deciding factor for me..
either pay more or wait longer, and guessing price doesn't matter that much in your case, I see why you chose Antsuk![]()
Ant farm v2 "thank you for purchasing gmod so i can buy expensive ants"
Sort of surprised me how cheap they are.
Build three gates that you can raise near the middle, so you can have contained fights between the two colonies
I might get a ant farm later on too, although not now because the ants I want (they're easy european ants which don't need shit like a heat lamp and so on) are hibernating, so that'll be around june then.

Lasius niger ants to be more precise
Edited:
easiest and most fun box will probably be this
the flat area is where they can dump trash/pick up food.
Didn't know there were so many types of ants.
I just referred to them as the ones that do nothing, the ones that sting, and the ones that will paralyze you in seconds.
My order got delayed, it was kind of my fault but AntsUK were a bit snotty with me.

Whenever I am mistreated by customer service reps I try to sympathize by imagining how bad their job must really be.
I mean, this guy sells ants.
Ants.
That is easily a step below "lawnmower salesman" and "horse inseminator" as a job title.
I think some people might like selling ants
