I used to watch a lot of Cartoons when I was a kid, my favorites being:
    -Edd, Ed, 'n' Eddy
    -Dexters Lab
    -Courage The Cowardly Dog
    -Batman: The Animated Series
    -Batman: Beyond
    -Samurai Jack
-Star Wars: Clone Wars (Not the new one with the Mary Sue Apprentice)

When these shows were taken off Cartoon Network and were being replaced by Adventure Time, Chowder, Flapjack, and the Regular Show I pretty much abandoned Cartoon Network. I later abandoned Nickelodeon when they started having more Live-Action Shows then Cartoons. Also I tried watching some of the shows by Seth McFarlene but I didn't find them to be entertaining at all (The only thing significant I liked was Stewie from Family Guy).

I pretty much listened to a recommendation from my brother about trying some of the Sci-Fi anime shows he had watched that I might like FLCL and Ghost in the shell: Stand Alone Complex. I found them to be entertaining and they actually had a story rather than random bullshit you find on the Cartoons now.

So basically The older Cartoons were awesome! But if you actually want to watch something decent don't watch any of the newer cartoons, try watching a bit of anime instead and see if you like it.

Cartoons put fucked up ideas in the heads of kids. The shit that it tries to teach is horrible. But most kids are too stupid to catch those hidden messages, so it all balances out.
Tom and Jerry didn't even try to hide the sexual references.

    I don't know, I don't watch cartoons anymore.

Anyway I'm pretty sure the kids today don't even see the difference in the quality of the old-school and new-school cartoons, if they even give a shit.

Are you serious? I couldn't get past the opening on that. You gotta thank your god awful fanbase for making me actually give it a try.

Anyway my tv cable provider sucks balls and got rid of CN and instead replaced it with shit kids co that only runs 3-6 episodes of boring random cartoon shows.

That nailed tv in the coffin for me.

On another part i really hated most CN shows since they always had those omggoaway type of episodes on their shows like ppg (fuck that had a lot of these moments)

The old, Tom & Jerry and Scooby-Doo are by far the most normal and down-to earth shows that were made.

Good shows atm that I watch pretty regularly:

    Adventure Time
    Regular Show
    Phineas and Ferb

Theres a few more that I can't remember but I'd say these are just as good (if not better) than many old cartoons.

There's a lot of crap though, Nickelodeon especially has gone to shit pretty badly.

There's always good and bad cartoons, although some I miss more than others (WHY DID MEGAS XLR GET CANCELLED?!)

    Edited:

I love Ed, Edd n Eddy, Dexter's Lab and Codename: Kids Next Door, they were awesome,

I actually enjoyed Ben10 a LOT, the original show had a lot of humorous writing, unique story and cool characters (also the characters weren't 2D, grandpa hides his secrets from the kids, ben is an asshat, gwen gets magic n shit despite being a sciencey character)

But it went to shit when they turned it into a suprsrs teen show for srs people omg romanch n were all guna dye omg kevin hugz mehhhh

    Edited:

Chowder has it's moments too, it's a bit of a rip on spongebob but it's not terrible.

    Edited:

    ALSO
Metalocalypse, Archer and a few other more adult cartoons are AMAZING.

I was born in the late 90's (1997), and I mostly watched cartoons like Johnny Bravo and Dexter's lab from ages 3 up to 7 before I discovered the computer, but here's what might put into some perspective of what most of the kids I know in my generation actually like out of the stuff on TV (Y2K cutoff, if it aired after 2000 I'm counting it):

Avatar: The Last Airbender was amazing, and The Legend of Korra has been a decent sequel.

Adventure Time is an amazing show

    Regular Show is also amazing

    MLP:FiM is amazing (IMHO)

    Kappa Mikey was decent.

    Invader Zim was pure genius

Chowder was always really popular but I never got into personally so.

Flapjack didn't interest me but was also really popular.

Yu-Gi-Oh GX was a very *personal* favorite of mine. I swear I'm the only person on the internet who likes it just as much as the original.

Yu-Gi-Oh wasn't exactly a masterpiece but I'm nostalgic from watching it with my brothers when I was 5-ish.

Phineas and Ferb was good but has gone down in terms of writing, probably due to episodes being 15 minutes long instead of 30.

My Life as a Teenage Robot was great.

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends was one of my favorite cartoons.

I could go on, but I can't really think of anyone who watches all of that sitcom crap they put up on TV like Icarly or Labrats anyways.

If any of you do not wish to start a pony drama, then I would advise you to notmake snide remarks about it. I do not intend to start one and thank god ratings are not enabled in this section.

Cartoon Network may have had its dips, but overall cartoon these days are as good entertainment as anything else. The only bad thing I can think about is Spongebob turning into The Simpsons. The movie was intended to be finale, but Nickelodeon intends to milk it. The writers are fumbling with little ideas they haven't explored yet and in some cases recycling the premises of entire episodes.

Something went wrong somewhere when My Little Pony is rehashed 15 years or something after the original airing and it's still a grand hit with everyone.
(Sorry Vodkavia, I have to address this )
Not to come off as a brony or anything but the show ain't all that bad. It teaches kids to be good "friends" yet it's not telling you what to do like other where they want kids to stand up and dance in front of their own TV. NOTE. The fanbase ruins it but I gotta agree, weird that "adults" find the show so interesting. It's really horrible now after people went all over board...

Still gotta say, some cartoons like Flapjack,Adventure Time and Regular show are still pretty funny. They do an amazing job giving both adults and kids laughs.

There is a movie called "Hop" or something that is a prime example since it's about a "easter bunny" on Easter Island. He runs off to LA to live with other bunnies... and god I laughed when he stood and talked to Hefner in Playboy's mansion.
That's humor that parents love yet their kid doesn't understand it fully. That's what makes me think a cartoon is good. Appealing to everyone like many shows succeeded.

There will always be some hits and misses with every generation. The only big issue I have with new cartoons is Total Drama. That show gives me the shits every time I see it.

Anyway, I'll put forward a statement about old shows dying out.
In the Simpsons Lisa is smart, Bart is mischeivous and Skinner sucks etc.. That creates problems because those attributes have become set in stone and are unable to develope further. Each character represents a certain group or attitude that is defined at the start of the series. Narrative cartoons like Avatar revolve entirely around the developement of characters, meaning individual characters become a much more flexible story tool. That means the very foundation keeps changing and lets content last much longer.

    False

When cartoons were first around (Im not doing the research but I am guessing around the turn of the century) they were mostly characters just getting hurt with a simple protagonist, and a simple antagonist. The protagonist usually would try to achieve a simple goal (get to the store, meet his/her girl/boyfriend) with the antagonist ruining it. Looney toons and tom and jerry are excellent examples of this.

Then shows like scooby doo and spiderman came arouind in the late 60s and 70s where there were protagonist(s) that actually had more character and there was more plot to the episodes. These cartoons and the older ones are still enjoyable to this day, because anyone can relate to the humor. It also did not have to use pop culture references to be funny.

Then what I am guessing late 90s and early 00s cartoon network and Nickelodeon were IMO at their greatest. The shows during those times are the ones I grew up with, and in a way I grew up with the old cartoons because CN would sometimes broadcast the old cartoons.

Nowadays, cartoons are just plain garbage, with no creativity put into them. The ONLY good shows on CN now is adventure time and Regular show. I havent watched nick in a very long time and never watched them much anyways IMO its greatest shows were Drake and Josh and Neds declassified, and they arent even cartoons. (gonna get flamed for not knowing about invader zim) Although I am really surprised with what they are allowed to say in cartoons nowadays. Piss, crap, pissed off. I feel upset that that is what writers have to use to make cartoons a little bit more funny to immature audiences, but Regular show is still funny, despite that it uses some inappropriate words and pop culture references.

I dunno. I could go back to almost any cartoon from the late 90's/ early 00's and it would probably be enjoyable, some of them just had a strange appeal to them. They were either sharp witted, well written, actually pretty funny, or just interesting. A lot of cartoons could get away with amazing things back then (seriously, go look up say, Ed, Edd and Eddy on the TV Tropes Radar section (I'm so sorry I sent you there)). The jokes were borderline adult, but hidden well.

Today it just seems to be "lmao so randum!!" shit, or attempts at "drama" with comedy included. Yes, there were some shitpiles back in the renaissance of cartoons, but the amazingly good ones stood out, and are still known today even if they don't air any more just because they became such icons. I kinda miss some of them. Invader Zim was probably the darkest fucking thing ever, but it was just great, Megas XLR was an awesome deconstruction of the mecha genre, it was dumb, but fun. Dexters' Lab was also a great cartoon, I don't think the same can quite be said for most modern ones.

I can't help but notice your lack of explanation in the last paragraph as to why they are bad, all you do is say "They're not creative!!" with a lack of example or reason why. 'The ONLY good shows on CN now is adventure time and Regular show.' Why is that? You didn't even say why. His post explains that as you age, your tastes and ideas change as well which is basically exactly what your post demonstrates even though it's existence is just an attempt at proving his point wrong.

Megas XLR was the result of a bunch of stoners combining America's qualities and Japan, yet was fucking amazing. Though wasn't it cancelled before the first season ended?

Pretty sure it made it to at least the second season. But was canceled near the end or something. Either way we never got any proper media release as far as I know, and it's quite hard to find decent quality online.

And yes, anime should count, it's still cartoons after all, animated shows in general fall into "anime", which in itself is just meant to describe Japanese animation, there are genres within it after all.
