This is a thread about that nice new Amazon Android tablet, the Kindle Fire.
What's so special about it?

It's pretty much a tablet compatible with Android apps, that has the Amazon eco-system built right in. Although it doesn't have access to the Android Marketplace, it does have access to the Amazon App Store, which has most apps you'd ever want. You can sideload btw, so you don't have to root for non-Amazon Market apps.

Pretty much an online cloud program similar to dropbox. At the moment you can upload your music and such to it, so you can listen online, or put it on the Kindle. At the moment you can't put documents or other files. All app space is free of course.
If you have Amazon Prime
You get access to thousands of free books, movies, TV shows, etc in the form of unlimited rentals. For example you may borrow 1 book every month.
Amazon Silk
A fancy webkit based browser exclusive to the Kindle Fire. It uses cloud acceleration, meaning it has the Amazon servers do some of the loading for you, to make browsing faster. You may disable this feature if you wish.
Rooting and CM7 and all that crap

Running a rooted Fire with the android market and ADW Launcher, probably the best android tablet I've used. Ironically I haven't read a single book on it. Lots of Age of Zombies, though.

Update came out 2-3 days ago, removed root and disabled superoneclick, but a new root is already out.

Has anyone tried the new rooting process yet? When I enter
via the command line, I get "cannot stat 'su'". I'm in the android sdk platform tools directory and adb is working fine.Code:adb push su /system/xbin/su
PS - the new rooting app has an "unroot" button so you can easily switch between being rooted and unrooted for streaming purposes.

I got one, I'm loving it
One app i recommend putting up there is Plants vs. Zombies (LINK) (there's two versions in the Amazon App Store, the Kindle Fire version and the version for other tablets) it's identical to other versions but it's still really fun and the Kindle Fire version is very well optimized for it
And the free month of Amazon Prime is awesome

Beats the iPad in my opinion, though I might warn you that it's very different from the vanilla Android OS cosmetically
And at the moment the App Store is a bit lacking but it's growing

The only things I miss from normal android is some google apps like Google voice and gmail, but I rooted mine and got them on it now :D

How'd you get the su commands working? I keep getting 'cannot stat su'.

When I first softbricked my phone without actually knowing anything about android it took me twelve minutes to find the problem and fix it
Can you get into the download mode?

I don't know. All I know is that the Kindle Fire Utility reads abdb cannot run in production builds whenever I try to do anything like change boot modes or install TWRP. The computer detects it in Device Manager and when I type abd devices into console. I also know that I can literally find no one with the same problem, even without specifying kindle fire in a google search.
When I try to do commands in KFU, it acts like everything is fine and dandy, and even says that it was successful, however a look back at the logs shows that it cannot find any of the directories and says abdb cannot run in production builds at some point.
The Kindle just has the Kindle Fire logo on screen for infinity.

Well mostly for google apps really. I'd unroot it afterwards.

For me, I didn't care about the amazon launcher (Which is pretty bad), or any amazon streaming services (which are still worse than netflix) so I went ahead and rooted it to be able to do things such as switch out my keyboard, switch the launcher, stop my kindle from randomly switching my wallpaper, and install apps that actually work perfectly but are marked as incompatible for whatever reason. Also, all of the google apps, of course, are great - namely the Market, which i much prefer over the amazon market (I only really use the Amazon market for the "Kindle Fire" edition apps and the free app of the day). It's really up to you, but you don't lose anything (other than the amazon streaming) from rooting, and it can be easily undone.

You can sideload apps without rooting.

Not Google apps, they required a Google Framework service that is in Android by default, but not on the Kindle Fire since Amazon syncs it with their service.
