Well, I've been listening to allot of good influential(at least to me) bands lately (Rise against, Five Finger Death Punch, Serj Tankian, and Daren Malakian) I would like to combine their styles and sing like them, however there is one problem- I have never sung before, I know nothing about reading music or playing instruments, I've always been interested but never acted on it, Until now. Are there any tips, tricks, or tutorial videos I should use? I don't have the money to go to a teacher and I am painfully shy but I wish to over come that. So if you can please help. hope this is right section to post.

Most people who want to become singers fail, because they are too scared to really use their voice in front of a crowd.

I don't think learning to read music is really a big deal, or a requirement.
Just like Hakita said, you need to be confident. I'd suggest trying to record your voice, and making sure that you don't sound bad, though. Then, if you're good, you can sing in front of people without worry.

i've noticed that my words are "sharp" like jagged sounding, how do I fix that without making it sound like I am actively trying?

This actually may benefit you if your going for a rock/punk style. I sung in school choirs, an a cappella group, musicals, and got private vocal lessons for a year, but none of it helped at all when it came to punk vocals - in fact, since I trained myself to sing so cleanly, I had a really difficult time figuring out how to get a rasp/edge. Some of my friends who had no experience whatsoever singing could do it a whole lot better than me.
Its a completely different style of singing, kind of isn't even singing at all. What really matters is your confidence, breathing technique, and the way you let air come out. Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-GNbyrFq-I. You may think the guy is a complete tool, but it helped me a lot when I wanted to learn this stuff.
The hardest part is finding a good place to practice. When you sing rock/punk, you need to be loud. You can't hold back or be embarrassed about how you sound. You'll sound terrible at first, but keep at it, sing along with music you like and try to copy the style. The most helpful thing would be to start a band with some friends and just mess around. All punk singers have their own style, you gotta try and develop your own.

5,153 PostsI assume what would help the most is trying to sing at correct pitch and volume while wearing headphones, and recording just your voice. Then you know yourself what you need to work on.

Lots of of air, lots of support. I sing in a band, in a choir and I play trombone. When you're going from a high pitch to a lower, give at least as much support as when you go from a lower to a higher. If you drop the support on the way down, you're likely to drop too low. Try signing while holding your hands at your sides - you should feel that your muscles are working. If don't give enough support, you'll start "singing with your neck" and you'll feel some tension there. That's not nice, and that's why you should keep that in mind.
About breathing - don't lift the shoulders. You should feel that your stomach is expanding, and when you sing you should feel it retract itself. All the while, your shoulders should stay in place.
Also, as others have said, sing with confidence. If you let yourself into it, people will be well-entertained (hopefully), and you'll most probably sing better, since you're using more air. If you use more air (not necessarily singing with more power), you'll get a better, clearer sound.

We can't know if you're good at singing if we can't hear you actually sing.

Yeah I was really into it during highschool. I had a good choir/theatre voice but what I really wanted was to play guitar and sing punk, alternative, and screamo stuff. I made some progress but before I really got there, I discovered electronic music. Been producing/djing ever since and haven't sung at all haha

5,153 PostsPity. Would you be interested in doing any vocals on the next concept album? Or even the next collaborative. Everything done around FP is electronic so I wouldn't mind pushing the envelope a bit and trying to put an actual song together with a couple of people.

If you want to sing most rock stuff it helps to be a tenor, but baritone is fine too, just means it will be harder to do high stuff.

No sorry, i really don't like the sound of my voice anymore and I don't have any decent mics.
If you have a piano, guitar or something accessible, practice your pitches by playing a note then matching it with your voice. Once you can do that, try some simple scales. That will help you learn how to vary your pitch

I wouldnt say I failed, I just fell out of it and became interested in other things. I can't stand listening to all that musical, a cappella, and chapel choir stuff that I used to sing, and like I said, I never really developed a solid rock voice

I'm not a singer, and my friends think I listen to singers that have a bad voice. (Bruce Springsteen etc. etc.) but my influence is the songs themselves. If a song is good, I realy wouldn't care about the overall voice of the singer. But you should also try and sing good tho :P

I'm guessing now, but find out whether you're a tenor, baryton, 1. or 2. bass.

Daron and particularly Serj have a fairly unique way of delivering most of their lines that I haven't really come across anywhere else. Keep that in mind. Honestly, I'm not sure I'd advise trying to mimic them, just because that vocal style is so difficult to pass off, and quite easy to sound ridiculous. Also keep in mind that your voice plays a significant role in this. Listening to some songs off of Mezmerize and Hypnotize, I feel like Daron occasionally tries to emulate Serj in his delivery and comes off sounding a little whiny because his voice isn't necessarily suited to it.

I think the best way to get a good vocal spectrum would be to get some Guns N' Roses instrumentals and take Axl's place. That's what I do and because of that I can sing in a high pitch.

Not gonna be easy, while Phil was a great growler he has fucked up his voice (throat?) a lot through the years because he had a bad technique

i sing alot of rock like foo fighters and biffy clyro, and i agree with alot of people here that you need confidents. If you want to get that raspy voice try to sing right after you wake up, and try to mimic how your throat feels and how you use it, thats how i learned it.
