as far as I know, all you can really hear are your own voices and sounds you make in DS1 which I can see as plausible if 90% of your suit is metal and vibrates other surface vibration onto you

also I love Shattered Horizon for no sounds but I don't like the simulated sound because being able to detect enemy gunfire seems silly realism-wise

Stuff moving in the background makes noise, like the engine's centrifuge as it whips past you. Enemies also make muted yells when you shoot them. Your weapon itself should have very little or no sound because your gloves aren't metal, yet you can clearly hear it (albeit muted). Explosions, too, are audible. I can't think of any sound effects you don't hear in some manner when you're EVA, it just seems different because the background hum of machinery, music, and random muttering are gone.

Simulated sound is more realistic than you'd think, simply because it's so useful. One of my favorite space games, Independence War, used sound effectively by having the only external sounds you hear be electromagnetic interference from the drives and weapon systems of other ships. It makes it much easier to keep track of who's where by employing an additional and intuitive sense.

It's been awhile since I played Dead Space but interesting, it could also be because I played at 3am so I kept the volume low

as for simulated sound it seems a bit funny to think that you can hear enemy weapons because either the sound simulation system would be needlessly complicated (how does your suit know what's a firearm and generate sound? If so, how does it generate sound for enemies around the corner when you can't even see them? That would also mean the suit is generating sound for something you can't even see on radar or by the naked eye, etcetc; OR the weapons are standardized so any equipment can read them which is... weird) but since it's a game I play while thoughts like that flash at the back of my head

Oh, yeah, the actual implementation is contrived and very sci-fi but the underlying idea is pretty good.
