Okay, I'm going to try to build a cheap gaming computer. Right now I'm stuck on processors, and have some questions. So there's Intel G850, G620, etc., and then there's E4300, E6850, and so on. What is the difference between the two?
I think the G denotes IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor), but I've already got a graphics card, so would I be better off with an E### chip, or a G### chip? I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I'm looking for the most bang for my buck.
tl;dr: E#### or G#### series processors?

Check the socket. G- series is on LGA1155 AFAIK and the Exxxx series are old, on socket 775.
Go for AMD Llano, much more worth it and you can save on the GPU.
What do you have right now? Budget, your GPU and what PSU?

Haven't got PSU picked out yet. Budget is...tiny. GPU right now looks to be a 6570, unless someone can find me a better card for under $70 (tiny, tiny budget).

I absolutely love putting together builds with tiny budgets, what's the total budget for the whole thing, and what are you needing? I promise I will get you some of the best performance for your money.

Total budget is probably $300, can go up to $350 (tiny budget!). I've found a reasonable case for $30, that 6570 for ~$68 (or I can use this old 128MB Radeon 9250 I have...for free), and this motherboard for $70. Considering this processor for $65. I might use my laptop hard drive (7200rpm, 320GB) to save money. Getting two of these RAM sticks ($10 a pop).
So far I'm at...$185. How am I doin' so far?
My goal is to be able to run some newish games at reasonable settings. Obviously not planning to max out Skyrim, but being able to play Fallout 3 or Oblivion on decent settings would be nice. At the very least, making my TF2 run at something better than 25fps at 800x600 windowed with Minecraft graphics.
I wish my budget were bigger, but I don't exactly make that much money right now. I just want to have a "good" PC for once.

Could run BF3 assuming you're going to use that 320GB HDD. Added in the $7 adapter for your notebooks HDD.
The BP500U can pump out 600W peak, 500W Continuous so power is not a issue.. I have a BP-500U pulling my rig along, but considering your lower power requirement I assume you could get by with this $44 unit.

What advantage does the 5570 have over the 6570, aside from the GDDR5 memory? My monitor is only 1280x1024, so would it really make that much of a noticeable difference?

6570 is a 'media' GPU, 5770 was designed for 'gaming'

Hmm, good point. I also found a GTS250 for $65, but it's got GDDR3 memory. However, looking at this: http://www.hwcompare.com/212/geforce...adeon-hd-5570/ it looks like the GTS250 might be the better deal. If not, I'll probably get the 5570.

The GTS250 is essentially a revamped 9800GT. It cannot play BF3 well at minimum settings.. it gets about 25FPS which is beyond unplayable. The 5770 can play BF3 at Ultra with playable framerate. The comparison you're looking at is the 5570 vs the 250GTS.
I honestly recommend the 5770, its a bargain for its price of $114 and it has not gone down a whole lot because its still pretty powerful.
It can play Ultra at a playable framerate, however I recommend medium-high in Battlefield 3 assuming you're going to get the rig I suggested which is mid-range gaming level.

If you're going to be playing TF2.. then this should suffice.. I assumed you wanted a good computer for good games.
Infact if you want to play TF2 then all you really need is a 8800GT..

Just because I'm not going to be playing BF3 on Buttrape settings doesn't mean I don't want a good rig...I just want to explore my options. I don't even like BF3.

BF3 was my example as I've personally benchmarked it on hardware. Its a new game, I think what you're looking for with your budget is a low end rig.. APU would suffice lol for what you play on your steam list.

Also I've decided to get the Radeon HD 4870.
A quick comparison between the 4870 and the 5770 shows roughly the same performance (and higher in some cases [in favor of the 4870])...and it's cheaper. Plus I have to think about my case, which is microATX.
The 5770 does look like a good card, but it's quite massive.

I mean if your computer can take a 4870 then by all means but if you have space constraints the 5770 is a smaller card

Huh, guess you're right.
My case is 15.00" x 7.50" x 13.80", though, so I think they might both fit either way. I'll have to do some measuring when it comes in, though. Who'd have thought this would be so difficult?
