Usually when that happens, I can't fast travel because there are "obstacles" I need to move away from.

Well technically you can always use Alt+movement key and choose to step into the open air.
    Can't gaurantee survival though

I was doing pretty well on my fortress, a nice one with bedrooms, workshops, a dining room. I was just setting up my hall of traps, when I saw this:

    This should be fun.

Yeah just use the trade dialogue, if it is better than what they have and they have the right proficiencies then they will wear it.

My dwarves have stopped mining and woodcutting. Anyone know why?

I have multiple dwarves holding picks and axes, with mining and woodcutting enabled as labors, but they're all just standing around the dining hall with "no job" instead of digging and chopping in the areas I've told them go to.
Has nobody else experienced this? It might just be a fortress-ending glitch if I can never cut wood or mine again.

Though I'm already trying to think of ways to work around it... I could make part of the fort above-ground, and I could trade for wood to some extent. I'd just have to start making bins and barrels out of copper or silver, but that's going to run out sooner or later. Plus, if the above-ground fort actually got big enough, we might run out of stone. Again, that's something we could trade for, but it'll be hard once we run out of supplies to make crafts with.

Hey guys, I'll be making/posting an update TOMORROW! It'll probably be missing DFHack/Stonesense/Mayday, but it'll do for now.
Eventually I'm also considering doing two separate packs, one always without DFHack/Stonesense/other-advanced-utilities so its even more Newb-friendly.
"Lazy Newb Pack" and "Lazy Newb Pack Plus" or something?

Yes you can also update LNP yourself! I provide details on how to do it in the first post under "HELP: Do-It-Yourself-Upgrading". You don't need to do that crazy stuff with SoundSense, it will just prompt you with a dialogue box to find the gamelog.txt.

What I do is nicknaming them, add them to squad, and then removing the nickname.

I just realized I've been playing on build 31.25 (with the Lazy Newb Pack). Is it advisable to update to 34.02 with DT, and Mayday's graphics, or should I stick with the Lazy Newb Pack until a new one is released (whenever that may be... Considering the last was released in March of last year, I doubt there'll be another)?

And then I notice the watermelon's post and look like an idiot. Disregard.

All right, I got to the bottom of my mining/woodcutting glitch. I manually assigned my dwarves to the burrow, so it didn't matter that they were currently set to the "inactive" alert. I did not know that it worked that way.

hmmm, if you have no burrows, I don't know what I could suggest, other than basic things like "Are they holding axes and assigned to woodcutting labor?"

Playing as a plump helmet man is the best.
    Came across a moon crone.
First punch shatters her spine, then she spends the rest of the fight without landing a single hit.

Listening to the guile theme while doing it, the best thing ever.

Tricky fucking vampire, she was the one who accused the poor ranger I had hammered.

She's in jail for half the year, then will get 100 hammerstrikes. If she does survive I may weaponize her, keep her locked in a room/semifort with a bunch of burrowed dwarves who are outright useless, make her a commander of her own little penal legion of useless dwarves.

What's the highest resolution you can make a Graphics set at? I'm wanting to do a hand-drawn one, but i'm not certain if it's possible.

(Not a Tileset, a full graphical set, similar to Mike mayday's pack)

I've heard you have to have at least 80 tiles running horizontally across the screen at once. At 1920 pixels horizontally, you can have something like 30x30 pixels per tile.

My pit trap at the entrance isn't working as well as I'd hoped, mainly because the goblins are smart enough to not walk across my traps. Instead, they're just standing outside the fort, waiting for dwarves to come out or something. I don't have a military, so I guess all I can do is wait for merchants to come over and kill them.

My first fort is still going strong!

Honestly, I'm surprised it lasted this long. There were plenty of times when the fort went to shit and I thought we were doomed, then we made a comeback. Like when some fisherdwarf didn't finish his artifact and punched his baby to death, but not before the baby punched one of his teeth out. And when 2 minotaurs and a lizard man attacked at once. Right now I'm trying to get rid of this vampire. He killed 10 dwarves so far, and this shit is getting out of hand. And ideas on how to find him?
