You can, it's a right mess on though because it uses a very custom and stripped down EFI.
I've had full on ubuntu running on mine, and the test builds on android-x86.

Best solution is the stock OS with SSH enabled. You can then run a remote desktop application if you like.

I just use mien as a clock and internet radio player now.

Nothing too over the top, I've been upgrading from a stock HP rig since Dec 2010. Still need to replace the mobo, RAM, and CPU. My little Athlon II x4 635 can usually hold up on most games. I do have an unlocked Radeon HD 6950 in here though.
