It helps the forum, which has been constantly having server issues and clearly Garry doesn't see enough profit from the site to maintain it (he removed media tags to save bandwidth, it's obvious the site is worthless to him).

It's probably because before it became purchasable Gold membership was simply a reward for attendance and so, so most gold members were pretty much considered role models for new posters, so I can understand the stigma when every bad poster and their mother is able to purchase that sort of position.

When buying gold member was added everyone was idiots and people got permabanned. And media tags are still in.
