I personally detest Ibanez basses. Gio stuff is really not that great, the overall feel of them is just bad.
If I were you I'd get this http://www.thomann.de/gb/epiphone_eb0_ch_bundle_1.htm or one of the Fender Squier starter sets.

The higher end stuff is alright, the Gio series is horrible.

Ever since I started building my bass at school, I only like guitars made of wood, and with the grain visible. Also since it's entirely my own design, it's awesome finding wood with good grains that enhance it.
For the body I'm using a light colored Cherry wood, the face-plate is Curly Maple, the neck is Maple wood, the fingerboard is Indian Rosewood, and I don't remember what the headstock face-plate is called, but it's a dark color that's similar to Indian Rosewood and has a kickass swirly grain.
I'll get more pictures sometime, but I took these photos around Christmas.
The hole going right through the guitar where the pickups go isn't that big of a deal, the wires for it will be going through it anyway. Also, check out that grain on the back that looks like a spike. That's why I love grains, you get those unique designs.
It's my first time building one so it's not great, but still love it.

Also, the coating that's on the body right now is only to keep it from cracking in humidity. It's a mix of mineral spirits and I don't know what else. Right now it's wrapped up on a shelf while I build the neck.

all the parts soldered onto the pcb (resistors, caps, diodes, transistors, and the IC socket)
yhere it is dropped into the enclosure. the underside of the footswitch is in the bottom, the in/out jacks are up top, and the wires are fucking everywhere.
everything is soldered into place and is ready to go, except for a 9v battery which i didnt have. oh well, had to run to the gas station for smokes anyway.

gotta say man this thing is pretty fuckin beast. fuckin straight up tube screamer for a fraction of the price
the project wasnt hard either, but this is a pretty forgiving pedal. This was my first build and first time working with a pcb, so my soldering is a little questionable in the places i worked on first. fortunately it becomes significantly easier after every joint.
Ill probably include this in a thread once i open up and do some surgery on the champ 600.

However much I agree with the building your own pedal part, I got my TS9 for $50, so it's relative to people who want new gear vs used gear.
BYOC is pretty cool

That's definitely something you should consider. I was thinking about getting that before getting my Kramer Disciple D-1 (only slightly more than that Epi). I'd say go for that if you've got no other contenders.

when I built my first guitar i could have gotten a wizard neck for $40 less but I chose the thicker and more expensive neck that was made with less figured wood.

I've been playing bass for 6 years, and I still play the first bass I ever bought because it's a fantastic bass for the money (also I'm mainly a gutiarist

Does anyone know if there's a difference in what wood I need to buy in regards to whether I'm doing a flat top or a carve top? Or is it just a difference in thickness?

it'd just be thickness as you're taking away a large proportion of the wood. the wood itself won't matter that much as far as I know.

I always liked the Cort Artisan in white. fantastic looking bass. You might not think it but having a good looking instrument is important. If you like the look of it then you'll want to pick it up more often and play it more than if you get a good instrument that you don't like the look of.Ibanez are great, the Gio series is not.

just re-done my pedal board. reintroduced some old pedals any changed the layout a bit, it sounds pretty sick now.
took a quick shot on my phone pretty shit quality because i couldn't find the flash on it.

Just buying the cheapest amp possible atm (30 odd quid for 15w), may not compliment the guitar well but it's better than nothing!

not a bad idea. just make sure that when you go to improve your amp, you get something good, save a lot of money and take time over your decision. after getting a decent bass like that Epiphone, a good amp is important. when you step up, look at Fender and Gallien Kreuger as your first choices.

nothing wrong with it, just not what I would have done. In that price range there aren't a whole lot of better choices but I'd have saved up for something a bit nicer personally. An Ibanez SR300 is several orders of magnitude better but costs an extra hundred pounds

I couldn't play it, I hate neck dive. Can't play anything that doesn't have strap buttons by the 14th fret or further towards nut. Maybe its just me.

Also I feel like my world is collapsing. I'm a pretty vocal disliker of EMGs in all their shapes and forms, but I'm fixing up a friend of mine's LTD EC1000. And I can safely say the neck EMG60 is one of the best pickups I've ever heard
