part of the whole zombie trend is derived from serious self defense/survivalist types on forums. Zombie basically being the code for bad guys. So people would talk about serious defensive shit but just replace bad guys with zombie. Then everyone else jumped on the bandwagon simultaneously as zombies started showing up more in mainstream entertainment, and it completely lost it's original meaning and people started talking about using .22s to defend from zombie invasions.

Zombies aren't really a new thing, just a different flavor of apocalypse. I Am Legend (and the movie based on it, called the Omega Man) is a good example of zombie-like media that didn't use actual zombies.

Nowadays, it's a very easy label for a game, book, movie or whatever to instantly establish the genre it falls under. It's gonna be about the apocalypse or at least a major disaster, there will be survivors trying to stay alive, it will be brutal. It's a lot harder to explain something like, for example, the societal degradation in Children of Men that nonetheless results in the same basic scenario and style.

As for zombie-themed guns, I dunno. Probably because zombies have entered public consciousness.

The thing that i'm annoyed about is the fact that they're not 'new' and they haven't only just entered public conciousness, it's something people have been jerking off over for so many years it's stopped being interesting and is just annoying to see everywhere now.
