I like how in season 3, when    Mike tells Gus about the scythe in front of Walt's house, Gus says the cartel brothers are animals. Yet he kills someone in the most violent and inhumane ways in front of an audience, then threatens to kill a family including an infant.

I think Gus realized how unstable Walt was and wanted to replace him with someone he could control. That being Gale.

Gale really seems like a good catch for Gus, would never question orders, would never ask for more money, and had (basically) no life.

It was also directly disobeying his orders. Gus was not happy about the dealers treatments of kids, but he ordered Walt and Jesse to not worry about it. Taking matters into their own hands was just a spit in his face.

That basically. But from when    Walt and Gale first cooked he was taking notes and looking at every detail, I just wasn't sure if that was his plan from the start.

   I would call that more of an insurance policy. You're employing someone with terminal cancer so you pretty much have to make plans to replace him right from the start
