Wait if I buy a WP7 phone now, will I get an update to Apollo?
Or will Apollo phones be purchased separately?
Not sure if reliable but this guy says yes.
I would wait for the Apollo phones. Get a phone built for Apollo. Not saying the phones now will run it poorly, but I'd rather have a phone built for Apollo as it looks like quite a few interesting changes are on the way.
Just dropping a note - the interrop unluck for the lumia 800 has been sort of made.

I just bought a Samsung Focus. I know it's an older 1st gen WP7 phone, but for $100 it was a steal and I really just wanted to try out the platform. It's really astounding how this 1GHz single core Snapdragon + Adreno 200 is much smoother than my 1.2GHz dual core + Mali-400 Galaxy S II.
Anyway, loving Windows Phone. Can't wait to see how the platform evolves with updates and as the app market increases.
i wish the GUI would be more customizable though, can't even add a wallpaper in the back of the tile menus
i forsee a bg wallpaper being relatively easy to implement, even keeping the dark/light themes
just overlay them on a black/white background with reduced opacity
I assume that will come with Apollo, since Windows 8 has reduced backgrounds.
It better
My biggest complaint with the customization is you can only choose preset colors (without a registry edit) and no home screen wallpaper.
Okay, need to get a cheapish WP7 phone around £150 and under, just something to text on etc, and do the basic stuff.
Was looking at a used HTC Radar. Btw, I'd prefer used to lower the price.
I bought my LG Optimus 7 for £145 about 6 months ago on eBay - It was a year old when I bought it so I replaced the battery but other than that it's perfectly fine.
Oh wow nice, will take a look. Actually would save 20-30 as there's some going for £130.
EDIT: That will be getting bought vv Will leave buying a monitor until I find a good one on offer.
Yeah having completely customizable colours would be nice, I doubt that they'll implement it, though.
It is implemented, I think it's just an HTML color code in a registry key.
But for those of us with no custom ROMs with easily modifiable registries, that's kind of out the window
On my Focus I can do registry edits after just getting interop unlock. Do other manufacturers have some sort of extra locks on the device?
Oh also, I love the battery life on this thing. On Android I could barely get through a school day with data off. On my Focus I can have HSPA on all day with bluetooth and max brightness and I'll still only go through half my battery. Does anyone know if first gen WP7 devices will get Apollo?
I have Verizon so you can only imagine the sort of restrictions they forced HTC to put on my device.
That and there's no drive to hack the Verizon WP, and last I checked the Mango bootloader really fucked things up.
That's unfortunate. I just had to visit a website and now I can install XAPs and edit the registry. Plus I was able to re enable tethering which wasn't included with Mango on the Focus for some reason. Probably whining from AT&T and Rogers.
I don't even think my phone has the hardware for tethering
It's the HTC Trophy AKA HTC SparkW in the development community in case you're curious. Perhaps you can find something I can't
The Radar is actually pretty solid. I'd definitely get that over the Optimus 7 just because the build quality is superior to the Optimus.
I've got the HTC Radar, and it's a pretty nice device. The CPU is a newer model, and you'll probably get better battery life with it.
Tempted, however seen a bid for the LG at £90 with £2.50 postage, ends in 15 hours. Or there's one at £100 buy it now with £7.50 postage.
I know the LG is plastic on front but has a metal back and apparently has nice weight. I don't know if it would be worth spending the extra £50 for the Radar when I could use that for a new desk
EDIT: Only real differences I see is LG has the more storage, but Radar has Mango 7.5? Guessing this is new type of OS, can this be used on the LG?
Edited:
Okay, i'll go £120 max on a used one. Got a few on watch list.
Just really, how would it justify more cash?
Edited:
Or what about the HTC Trophy?(I have no idea on windows phones)
Do not get the trophy.
It's a piece of shit. Mine turns off randomly, has dust under the screen, and I've had to replace it 3 times for backlight issues.
I might just be unlucky but still
I do have battery issues with my Optimus. You can upgrade it to Mango, so you don't have to worry about getting a phone which says 7.5 on the listing.
All gen 1 phones got updated to mango as well.
It's basically something similar like android 1 vs android 2.
(or well more like froyo vs ICS but you get the gist)
Hmm interesting.. so many decisions but it's between the LG Optimus and HTC Radar, preferably Radar if I can get for price. Just have to sell my iPhone 4 i've had for 8 months, hoping to get about £260.
You know, I've noticed the discussion on the background. I actually think we won't see any complex background like on other platforms (possibly very simple tiled grayscale based backgrounds) but instead a future specification for WP will have an OLED requirement.
The UI pretty much screams OLED at every sign and if you have an OLED screen it seriously shines.
Would make sense since the ZuneHD was OLED as well.
I mean just compare a lumia800 to a phone with a more traditional screen. The moment you move into darker lightning conditions the difference is like light and day.
fo thsoe in central europe. Fairly cheap unlocked 710

For 200 EUR
I really hate how the Email app doesn't stick with the dark UI scheme. I changed it using registry edits, but it wrecks Office for some reason, and it still shows the emails themselves with a white background and black text. Not that big of an issue, but when I get an email in bed it's a huge shock to my eyes to have it jump to a white screen from a black one.
And a short time later comes the verge on their anti WP7 crusade claiming they have deep inner sources claiming it's a lie.
They already did. The Verge is such a huge joke of a technology website. They praise Android despite it's inefficient use of hardware and sloppy Java code, and they hate webOS and WP7 both of which have innovative designs, good code, and use the full potential of the hardware they're given. Hell my since retired palm pre with its measly 600MHz CPU was smoother than my Galaxy S was, and my Focus beats out any Android phone that we carry on Bell.

Oops forgot the article. I like how you basically predicted entirely what the article would be.
http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/17/29...llo-no-upgrade
Is the "Microsoft Evangelist" a reliable source? If so, I'd trust his opinion over some anonymous source that the Verge have grabbed out of nowhere.
If pre-Windows 8 phones don't upgrade to Windows phone 8 when it's released, I might put off getting one and stick with my brick for a little bit longer.
I'd be disappointed if my Focus doesn't get WP8, but depending on how hardware intensive it is it could be understandable. However, Tango is the update to allow devices with 256MB of ram to run WP7, and I'd imagine putting out an update to allow devices that will never see an upgrade that releases like three months later would be a bad move on Microsoft's part.
What I find actually interesting though, is how the verge and android fanatics are slamming WP7 for not having a confirmed upgrade. (technically speaking they're all acting as if it's confirmed that they upgrade won't be happening).
When android is by far the worst offender as far as upgrades go. And often enough the only way to update is to use a community made rom.
Also loved how the verge reviewed an adroid handset just recently. Same resolution as the l900, but no Oled. And it get's a solid square eight as a display. Yeah totally not biased.
I'm curious, do you guys have issues opening up long email threads? I've posted elsewhere but didn't get any feedback so I may as well try here.
Works fine on my Focus. How long are we talking here?
Edited:
Wow I just noticed the overscroll isn't just the bounce like it is on iOS. It squashes the text or the tile slightly when it gets pushed up or down. Man the OS has all these little touches that really shows how much polish went into it. It's too bad MS still has a lot of skeptics from the Windows Mobile days.
About 40+ replies or so. On my Radar, it takes about a minute each time I open up the thread.
Oh the max I usually get with somebody before forgetting to reply and sending a new email is like six to eight so I can't really help. Sorry.
So do we have a release date on any Windows 8 phones?
