Hisao sat in the plain chair, watching Lilly sob. Her face flushed, she leaned forward, hands to her cheeks. She reeled backward with a sharp intake of breath, her expression softening even further as she succumbed to her emotions.
But she wasn't sobbing, she was laughing. Chuckling at his jokes, at his nature, at the slips he constantly made about her blindness. They were in love, and Inverness seemed so far away now; to both of them. He rubbed the new, fresh scar across his chest, forming with his other into a small 'x' shape. It'd be a while before his chest stopped aching, but he was perfectly able to pay no mind to it as he watched Lilly's features contort and dimple in her happiness.
As the laughter died down, Hisao stared his lover in the eyes, wishing desperately she could stare back into his. "Thank you for staying." He said, honest and true.
Lilly wiped a fresh tear from her eyes, breathing still heavy from laughing so hard at whatever joke he'd said that was now lost to the ether that hung between space and time as they talked in the tea room.
She smiled in his direction, sad, tentative. "I don't know what I was thinking, honestly." Her voice was just as calm as it always was, but Hisao looked at her, and he could swear he could see her screaming at her parents again over the phone, driving another axe into the middle of her family tree; just as she had a few nights before. His own grin faded as he recalled the event.
Hisao shook his head, glad Lilly couldn't see him so deep in thought. "It's fine. I know you were ready to move on, and I want you to know that I love you and I always will." He took her hand in his, confessing honestly. He blinked, and there were two angry, purple bruises under her eyes. Whether from stress, lack of sleep, or something far worse, they were there and he saw them; saw right through her guise, to the real Lilly, the one whose emotions were buried in favor of quiet and outer peace. She was far from suffering, far from depression, but also far from being sound of mind. He looked again and they were gone.
They ate the rest of their lunch and departed for their classes, with a kiss hovering in the air as the door closed behind them. As Hisao turned and walked down the hallway, hands in his pockets, he vowed he would never see Lilly like that again. In the next few months, they would be graduating, and he made a promise to both her and himself that he would fix their lives until there was no more fixing to do. He would make everything alright, Inverness be damned.
But, for now, he had class to go to, and as he entered, Shizune and Misha were waiting for him.
Misha practically launched herself at Hisao in her attempt to block the path to his desk. "Hicchan~!" Her grin quickly faded into a serious expression Hisao couldn't quite place, however.
He tried his damndest to act nonchalant despite jumping almost a foot in the air at her yelling. "Oh, hey, guys. What's going on?" He looked to Shizune, still unsure who he should look at when addressing the two.
"Shicchan and I had the strangest dreams last night! We were all trapped in some hole in the ground and it was pretty scary!" She leaned in closer to Hisao, whispering in his general direction. Somehow, it still managed to be just as loud as her normal speaking tone. "Shizune and I died a lot."
Hisao shivered at her sudden morbid tone. "But it was... Just a dream, right?" He furrowed his brow. Such a thing seemed pretty off for someone like Misha to be dreaming about.
She tossed back her head and laughed heartily, Shizune adjusting her glasses with a frown. "Of course, Hicchan~! Everyone knows stuff like that can't really happen!"
He was about to counter with a quote from his favorite horror author, but the bell rang just as Mutou stumbled into the class, looking just as tired and worn-down as ever, and they quickly took their seats.
