Hey, stupid problem but I need some help here:
I just recently got a brand new Toshiba laptop, and during the set up process I was asked whether I wanted to install 32-bit or 64-bit. Seeing as the notebook has 8GB or RAM, I chose 64-bit of course. The next screen there was some stupid black screen with recovery options and shit, I clicked yes on something and then it took me to another screen, and at that point I had no idea what the fuck was going on so I clicked cancel on the process, and the laptop shut down. When I started it again, Windows started installing itself automatically, and when Windows finally finished I checked My Computer and it's 32-bit.
Here's the problem: Toshiba didn't give me a recovery disc, only a key for Windows. I can't download an ISO of Windows 7 and burn it on to a disc, because my internet is really shit slow and I actually have no discs spare. Any way to get 64-bit working?

Torrent a Windows 7 64-bit ISO from your public library. Use your license key, and destroy the disc when you're done. 100% legit install.

A brother has agreed to lend one of his ISOs and a disc, so yeah I'll follow through with that.
Ok new problem though, I heard somewhere that once you activated a key on a certain type of OS (32 or 64), the key will be locked to that type and won't be usable with installs of the other type. Is that true?

No, I've done that multiple times myself, keys are never 32 or 64 bits locked.

Also, being in possession of a copy of Windows 7 or a variant on a CD, is not illegal in any way, and you will not be in trouble by having it on a CD that someone burned for you.
While on the other hand, if the CD is CRACKED, and PRE-LICENSED with a key other than your own, then it is illegal.
You can obtain legally obtainable ISOs from here, if you want non-torrented ones. Digital River is Microsoft official online distributor partner, so it is very much so legal.

Dumb question here, but can you use these with a OEM key of Windows 7? Or does it not make a difference in Windows 7? I remember in XP you couldn't install retail XP with an OEM key and vice versa?
Reason being, I want to upgrade my school laptop from 32 bit (which they installed for some reason) to 64 bit sometime. I have 4 GB, I want that missing 750 MB dammit!

I have one of those All-in-one discs that has all those versions in one DVD, and you choose which version of Windows 7 you want to install.

You could try Private Messaging PandaX, to see if he knows, because I don't know the answer. If the computer is new-enough, you could simply use something like "Universal USB Installer", take the Windows 7 ISO image, and then get a 4gig Flashdrive into the computer, and it will allow you to boot from the USB, if the computer is new enough to do so, and you can then install windows 7 from the USB, without wasting multiple DVD-Rs.
It would give you the opportunity to test if your OEM key works with a copy of the OS from DigitalRiver; while waiting for a response from PandaX.

Well, what a coincidence. My friend got a virus on his school laptop that completely fucked his Windows partition. So I guess I will find out pretty soon.

Found out it works perfectly. Only downside is that you have to activate Windows again over the phone.

Phone, or using your old key, or what have you, good thing is, you have an operating system back. It can't really be considered a 'downside' if it is a required part of the process no matter if you took my approach or got a dvd from someone. :P

Yeah, I just hate calling automated phone services. I have no idea why they make you reactivate Windows using the same key on the same hardware. Maybe it was 32 bit to 64 bit? I dunno.
What was amusing to me was yelling at the automated service "I'M FINISHED" at the end and he couldn't figure it out. But he could hear my friend say "back" from across the room while it was relaying the key back to me.

Ok quick question, slightly related to one someone else posted here:
I forgot that I had a OEM disc of Win7 Home Premium 64 bit which I used for my desktop. Am I able to use this disc with my laptop, but use the key that came with my laptop for it?

Just did the reinstall on my laptop, everything went fine. Key worked and all. Thanks for the help anyways you lot.
