One thing I couldn't get over was why none of the group picked up an automatic weapon (there were a few pretty good opportunities too). Sure its not efficient for individuals, but the sheer fire power that once could give out during a surprise horde (or people) would be incredible. I cant remember if they ever mentioned it.

Against individuals, it'd be just as good as a pistol. Afaik almost every rifle has a single-fire mode.

an RV has a lot more room than a humvee

Armoured vehicles tend to be finicky too, and even less opportunity for replacement parts than the RV.

Well from a production point of view, it would cost too much money to have an armored vehicle at their disposal.

Didn't they have a tank at one point on the show (not the survivors, but there was a tank in the city)? Pretty sure that costs more than an armored car.

It wasn't a real tank though, Some parts were CGI and the rest was just a fake.
If they actually had an armored car they would have to drive it.

I remember seeing a behind the scenes with them driving the tank in place and they mentioned the barrel was cemented or disabled. But they also made a prop for filming the inside scene of the tank.

I'll look for the video. - I couldn't find the actual video of them unloading it onto the street but I did find this:
