I have a 4GB RAM laptop lying around.
I'm going to reformat it and convert it to a full time Minecraft server.
    What should the rules be?

It will have to be "for profit".
You can play without buying anything but there is the option to buy:
    -2 Diamonds (5 cents)
    -Iron Stack (5 cents)

I'll let you guys help me with the shopping list.
I'm not sure what paypal can go down to (is 5 cents even possible?)

TNT stack will cost more than 5 cents though... for sure.. (for the sake of ensuring the server is live)

I want to keep this as VANILLA AS POSSIBLE! (minus the "for profit" store)
I'll probably carry "no-cheat" as well.

Spawn will also needs some means of regeneration or protection... but I still want it to be chaotic
Well. I might make multiple "spawn" points. Or maybe I should have the spawn point move based on how ... jacked up spawn is? (how does one quantify jacked up?)
Or maybe the spawn point should "drift" gradually... (with every new spawn) ... yeah, that'll work. Keeps things fresh.

Well I guess the only thing left is a domain name and the rest of the shopping list.

    Edited:

anyone know the specs of 2b2t.net?

Why the hell would you charge for in-game items? I mean seriously, the fun in the game is collecting your resources and building magnificent creations. Nobody will pay for your shit, you can do the exact same thing elsewhere for free, such as Creative mode.

You can collect the old fashion way or if you'd like to support the server you can pay.
I've seen servers that allow you to buy items before. It's not that big of a deal.

You say you want your server to be vanilla as possible, but people can build diamond castles within seconds of being on your server just by having money.

Yeah, no. A good server doesn't allow anyone to donate for ingame items or buy admin/moderator. You also seem to want to go with a anarchy type server and buying items in an anarchy server is probably one of the most absurd things I've ever read.

Just because other servers make it seem "ok" doesn't mean it is. Servers that allow people to do things like that are normally associated with abusive admins and a generally bad player base.

That's pathetic, I'm sorry. I've never really played Minecraft online but after hearing a reason like that, it makes me feel like staying on Single player permanently.

Well, selling items that might be useful is a bad idea because it ruins the player economy. Instead you could sell things that are useless but fun, like colored names or saddles.

That wouldn't be the best thing to do if you want people to actually stay on your server. If you are going to give items out for donations to keep your server up, it would make the server unbalanced and chaotic no matter what type of server you have, modded or vanilla.

The only thing I think donators should receive on minecraft servers are the fancy name plates, for example: Gold VIP/donator tag/name

But institute the banning rule after you build a steady player base so they will be committed and more likely to pay.

It reminds me of a GMod server I once joined where one of the advertisements was that if you payed 5 dollars/pounds a month then you would get access to STools and NPC spawners.

I've already payed for the game and I want to play online with other people with all the features my money was spent on, I don't want to pay another extra amount of money just to play with others the way it's supposed to be played in the first place.

This is actually a good idea. (though I still think that the ability to purchase diamonds and the such wouldn't completely throw the balance off... I will have to see proof first)

I wont do a week long ban though. Maybe a day long ban. I'll make the cost to get back in like ... 25 cents? I don't know. I'll have to play around with that first as well.

I'd rather not support a server which has a 'pay-to-win'esque scheme going on. Unless it revolves around PvP I don't know why anyone would pay for items?

    keep rules to a minimum

minecraft is a sandbox, when you add rules to a sandbox, it becomes less fun with each rule

and why are you trying to run a server for profit you cunt, go run a darkrp server

This is an awful idea all round.

As someone said, there are so many servers out there that yours is not going to be at all attractive to building up a player-base if people can just buy items.

The only real ways of making money would be either to do it off a pre-existing community or to suddenly start charging on a pre-existing server where people have already invested lots of time that they don't mind paying.

Both of those are crap things to do though. Too many people trying to make a quick profit off other people's success.
