You know what doesn't make any goddamn sense? Ubuntu's update-motd setup.

I understand them wanting to put how many updates are available at the start of a terminal, but you can do that by sticking your little command in /etc/profile, not making an entire damn program to change /etc/motd and almost completely shut out user-made SSH MOTDs.

Wait, all the window managers for Linux don't have one standard API to talk to applications through?

You got me to download this, and I discovered that ~16GB (I'm on a 60GB SSD) of The Witcher 2 files had hidden themselves in some obscure Steam folder, with no indication that they should've been there. Thanks a fucking lot.

actually most (if not all) of them do, using dbus or something along those lines
the problem is toolkits and various libraries..
and yes, I already had qt and the kdelibs installed from something else so its not that big of a deal.
Still, I wish there wasn't so many different toolkits and random libs for Linux applications, christ.
I have GTK, GTK2, and GTK3 installed, along with the EFL, and QT3, QT4, and a bunch of the base KDE libraries. Oh, and a bunch of the base gnome libs too. And obviously I can't remove this shit because some random application or a library for another application uses these and GAH.

Good thing all they really consume is storage space, doesn't really hurt having everything installed.

I used to have both the entirety of GNOME and the entirety of KDE installed at once, back when I was an actual fan of Ubuntu. Because if I didn't install both manually, trying to run anything was a pain in the ass.

Ubuntu is bad at defining what packages certain things depend on.

True, but space is precious when you only have a 160GB hard-drive.. And are a horrible pack rat that never wants to delete anything in fear that you'll use it soon (and never do)

I don't even mind having all of that installed. Every toolkit I have installed combined is like 1GB, and that's nothing on modern hard drives. If you're really short on hard-drive space you could just have GTK+ 3 and QT4, both together are like 300mb.

I've still got a 10GB hard drive in by BSD box. Contains the full OS, a couple servers, basic desktop tools (WindowMaker, Firefox, Abiword), and my old porn collection.

I actually have the kit to set up a two-disk 10GB RAID, plus another 120GB disk, I just can't be assed to install it.

In reality you only need GTK2, GTK3 and QT4, though. And frankly, a lot of the time you might find you have them on Windows as well. Several instances of them. Which is terrible.

Well, not sure about GTK3 since mostly only GNOME 3 uses it at the moment I believe?

as far as I've been able to tell, Qt-using programs just stick the DLLs in with the application, and GTK-using programs require you to actually run the GTK installer (though some like Pidgin run it automatically).

Last I checked you could stick DLLs in C:\Windows and any program on that system would be able to use it, but I could be wrong.

Mostly gnome 3 shit, yeah, but there's a few apps that use GTK3 it seems, like baobo, audacious, bluefish, evince, and zenity
