There is no point in spending money on any software as long as the free alternatives can hold their end up well. Both Blender and GIMP do the jobs i need them to, i have no need for the bells and whistles of Maya or Photoshop.

Unity is a great engine, especially as it caters for small teams. UDK itself is free, but it has moved its UI to scaleform, meaning you cannot make ui systems without a copy of the latest Flash editor. The UDK assumes that you want to make a 1st person shooter, and the default setup is for Unreal. This is fine if you are making a 1st person shooter or have an experienced coder, but if you are a single person trying to make a game, every update you need to change several lines of code (which may change from version to version) to allow you to use your mod, and then learn C, code it in individual files, then compile it all. It is a lot of faff to find out if the reticle shows.

In unity i can write some lines of code, hit run, and it will show me the game in full. Very little faff involved. And i like it when a piece of software has a small amount of faff.

They updated the UDK terms, it's now 25% after $50,000. It was 25% after $5,000 before.
