Download xNormal. It's great for bakes. Sometimes.

It sucks at AO bakes though (great for normals but so is 3ds), for 3ds max I recommend method 2 (mental ray)

EDIT: yeah the background is too light; for some reason the new ones won't show up.

The dark and light both look good honestly. Not sure which I like more.
