Welcome to the Knives and General Outdoor Survival Discussion thread!

This thread was pretty much made so we could stop filling up Firearms discussion and have a dedicated thread for discussion of knives, outdoors and survival type situations.
First let's see a couple things:

I want an awesome knife! What are a few good suggestions.
- Ka-Bar Becker BK2
- Ka-bar USMC
- Sog Seal Pup series
- Cold Steel SRK (Try for carbon)
- Fallkniven A1 Swedish
- Gerber LMF II (Decent)
- Esee-6 (The esse's all seem really good)

And more! Note, knives are also largely preference, you may not like any of the above and that's okay. These are just a few reliable survival type knives that have been tested.
Remember, the best survival knife is always the one on you.

What type of knife steel do I want?
There are plenty of good steels out there, but always aim for carbon, do your research and make sure you know what you're buying. Carbon steel is generally praised but there are plenty of good metals out there being used for knives, really just depends on the knife.

What are some good brands?
-Ka-Bar
-Benchmade(Good but also paying for the name)
-Cold Steel(Spotty reputation but look pretty good, just research the knife)
-Esee
-Mora (Cheap, great for bushcraft)
-Custom knives are often expensive, but ones with good reputation are often extremely nice.

Survival Things:
This thread is mainly for knives, but we can also talk about their uses and the practicality of owning them! Like a survival situation.

Survival Tins:
"A mini survival kit is a survival kit which consists of those most essential outdoor survival tools and supplies which are the hardest to improvise or replace. A mini survival kit is intended to be carried along all the time and is usually designed to complement other survival tools carried along in a larger, separate bag. These kits may be referred to as BOATs, or Bug-Out Altoids Tins."
You can strap a mini survival tin to a knife, and have a small life pack on your knife at all times!

Ranger Bands.
These are extremely durable rubber band type items made from old tubing, from a bicycle or such. Work great to hold a Survival tin to a sheath or any other practical purpose. They can also hold things together!

550 Cord:
The best cord ever. This stuff is what the military uses for paratroopers and general all purpose tasks. It's also referred to as para-cord. This tough stuff can withstand up to 550lbs of pure pulling force, have this on you and you've got some cord that can do anything.

There's ton more out there, people come up with new crafty things every day.

This was my first Cold Steel purchase, a Frontier Hawk. I really like it, I think it's the lightest axe they sell, it's much lighter than your average hatchet but the thin profile of the blade gives it a deep bite.

These come with a thick coat of paint which I've brushed off and blued the head gunmetal grey, I also added the small brass piece where a hole was, just for looks.

I don't really get the negativity with Cold Steel, at least from my limited experience.

I bought a bone handle obsidian knife. Obsidian blades are the sharpest knives available, surpassing even diamond edge blades because glass(volcanic or no) is an amorphous solid and diamonds are cubic crystals, meaning the edge is more flat than edge. Also when the obsidian is chipped to sharpen it, it has a molecule fine edge, you can carve up a steak in no time with one.

Considering this thread is also about outdoorsmanship, I think I'll toss something out there.

I really, really want to go on a bit of a backwoods, survivalist camping trip for a week or two, but I'm not sure whether or not I could

a) get permission from the parentals, or
b) whether or not it's legal to bring a rifle/handgun onto state property

On top of that, I don't even know if Arizona has any backwood locations deep enough that if I were out there attempting to get my survival guy on I wouldn't run into tourists or have someone startle me and accidentally shoot them or something.

Hmm, Malaysian law and Australian law are very similar. Are you sure there is no exceptions?

Like here its legal own one, but its illegal to take it outside your home.

you can't take any knife outside your house unless you need it for a specific purpose IE you could take a knife to the rifle range but not the shopping center

i think you can get ones without a blade that can't be modified that need to be approved but fuck that, its pussy shit and i honestly couldnt give a fuck about the law after I get the knife (I'm not going to be walking around twirling it in public

If you're not over 21 I really wouldn't bring any sort of gun.
But if you do go just make sure you've get enough supplies to at least initially last you over.

I find that gun shows are a good place to pick up unique/interesting/illegal knives. Gravity knives are illegal around here yet I've found dozens being sold at a gun show

lol, butterfly knives are so badass. unfortunately theyre illegal to buy in the uk, but theyre NOT illegal to own. solution, make one :P (although as i later found out, making them is also pretty illegal)





As it turns out theyre insanely hard to make, so thats as far as i got before i got bored/messed up too much. I made a wooden prototype, but working in metal takes, like, 5 times as long.

would still like a proper one to practice being spy. might have another browse around the web to see if getting one would be feasible...

SOG machetes are generally bad quality, they use cheap china-shit steel and the blade is too thin for heavy work

Got a few throwing knives made by SOG and they are really unbalanced and dont throw well at all, so I agree with Glitch
