    Update: Corrected source

Twelve days ago, there was quite a lot of discussion over EA’s Origin store boss saying they wouldn’t be engaging in “deep discount” sales on their Steam-rivalling service. David DeMartini said, “We won’t be doing that,” when asked about such services. Explaining why he added, “I just think it cheapens your intellectual property.”

Today on Origin, Dragon Age: Origins is available for £5. That’s discounted from £40 – an incredible 87.5% off!

Spore is 75% off, as is Darksiders, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, and Battlefied: Bad Company 2. 66% savings can be found on Alice: Madness Returns and Darkspore, while Dead Space 2, Shank, Battlefield Bad Company 2 Vietnam, Mirror’s Edge, The Saboteur, Gotham City Imposters, Gatling Gears, and Batman: Arkham Asylum are all half price.

That’s half the price of their current Origin prices, of course. Not half the price of their original prices. In fact, most of those games are now available for 87.5% off their original launch price. That’s an awful lot of intellectual property EA are cheapening today.

Apologies for the RockPaperShotgun source (For the whiners), but I couldn't find a different one.

It's fine, EA only has like 5 IPs with any value left so it's not like they're being hypocritical.

I'm guessing you mean the summer sales?
Because with steam it's pretty much sale 24/7...

But that's okay, I wasn't planning on eating this month anyway!

I know this won't be the first time someone explains this, so please feel free to copy paste this.

Facepunch is laughing that weeks ago they said having 75% sales means that it devalues the IP, then they go and have a 75% sale. It's hypocritical and hilarious.

My mistake guys. Article is actually up to date, I linked the incorrect one. The Origin screenshot is one I took from the Origin website today.

    Must be UK only, then.

They have a very small selection of games, and those not licensed by EA are selling for much less on other sites, such as Steam and Amazon.

Now that I think about it, this is a fantastic advertising strategy. Everyone hates EA, and they know it. So, they openly say something extremely hypocritical in order to get their sales on front pages, with us all shouting "Haha, typical EA!".

    Very fucking clever, you bastards.

You could just wait for a sale on Steam. Origin helpfully adds EA games past 2008-or-so to its own library you already own on Steam. You know, so you can not play and install them on Origin.
