Source Filmmaker, what is it?

Ever watch a trailer for a valve game, team fortress 2, half life episode1-2, portal, left 4 dead etc..? They were all produced in SFM, it is basically a hybrid video maker where you can record stuff in game, then edit it to make it look fancy and have some sort of story telling added to it, essentially making little mini-series possible..

Basically

The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by us here at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.

Is this going to ruin Garry's Mod?

Simple answer, NO. People don't buy garry's mod for video making most of the time, this won't ruin it at all, you can still make your crazy 10 second Dr. Breen with a big face screaming "HAX" if you will.

What are the system specs?

OS: Windows 7 / Vista (Windows 7 64 bit suggested)
Processor: 3.0 GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 (or higher) or AMD64X2 (or higher)
Memory: 2GB (4 GB suggested)
Hard Disk Space: At least 15 GB of Space
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 200 series card or better, or AMD Radeon 3000 series or better (NVIDIA GeForce 400 series or AMD Radeon 5000 series preferred)
Monitor: 1366 x 768 (1920 x 1080 suggested)
Audio: DirectX 9.0c compatible
USB headset with mic (suggested)

That's right windows XP users, time to upgrade

Don't panic, this thread can be used to discuss ideas or actually plan stuff at your will. You can also showcase your SFM projects from the leaked version that was shipped with Team Fortress 2 Beta back in 2007.

What to do - where to start - it's best to start practising when you get this, jumping into big projects with such a new and advanced program than the leaked SFM2007 is probably a bad idea, so the good guys at valve made some tutorials on everything you need to know to create a 6 second short.

Step 8 - Clip Motion and Puppeteering

It really sucks that the beta is TF2 only. I have some really awesome ideas I want to try out with Hl2.

I want a key, I need to submit stuff to the workshop though. I have to wait to take the survey, I won't be home for a couple weeks. Anyway, glad to see SFM is finally out of the pipeline and is being shown to the public. I remember using the old buggy version, good times.

as far as i know back on the '07 build they were massive if you did more than a scout running across the map

That video was under 2 minutes. Didn't tell me by fps or fpm.

That's actually a pretty cool screenshot, is this going to be like some sort of explosion and they just fly and crash somewhere?

If so, looking forward to it.

I've done basic flash, that's it - nothing on this level, with tutorials and practise you should be able to produce better work over time.

You might want to twat around with basic keyframe animation to get used to it, and then move on to SFM straight from there

I've done little animation in 3ds max and maya before, so I'm familiar with all the animation aspects, that's why I'm hoping to get in the beta.

Probably. Although now that I think of it, I recall signing up for Dota 2 on my Mac and I got an invite... Regardless, I won't be too heartbroken if I don't get it because I lack the patience/talent to use it. It would still be fun to play around with it.
