Apple has been toying with a heads-up display or video glasses since 2006 and they've already been granted a patent for their invention. Then earlier this month Apple's video glasses project won a surprising second patent which we covered in our report titled "Apple's Special Project for a Video Telephonic Headset Wins a Second Patent." Today, the US Patent Office published a new patent application from Apple regarding a future heads-up display that focuses on delivering Retina Display like quality to a smaller display that's powered by a much smaller battery than an iPhone. While today's patent fills a need in Apple's video glasses project it has to be one of the driest reads of the year. For those interested in the finer details of this invention, check out Apple's latest patent application titled " Display Resolution Increase with Mechanical Actuation."

Although Apple's patent application presents this oddball heads-up display graphic, one has to bear in mind that this isn't a design patent. In a patent application, Apple isn't obligated to reveal the end product that will make its way to market. The graphic simply represents a "generic" heads-up display concept, period. We all know that Jony Ive and his legendary team of industrial designers will work night and day to come up with the coolest design in its class whenever the time is right to bring this to market.

And lastly, Apple also notes in their filing that "other embodiments may take the form of other types of display devices such as television sets, computer monitors, projection systems, and so forth."

Which is what's troubling. Something this general should not be allowed a patent.

The reason I say that is because Apple's displays, in particular tend to be awesome, in part due to their IPS (in-plane switching) and also cause they splash out on decent materials like glass and aluminium instead of cheap shitty plastic.

IPS is neat, but everyone does that nowadays. (Hell, even the cheap Nexus 7 does that.) But I think for any HUD they should be going OLED, because to my knowledge, LCD screens can't be made transparent and OLEDs can.

After looking at a few videos on Youtube, I can see that, at least for the iPhone 4S, it only takes one accidental drop face down on concrete to break it.

    http://youtu.be/elKxgsrJFhw
    http://youtu.be/PbL7ciKmT7g

Then again, I guess every phone can break if you drop it on concrete so I don't know.

Same here. And then they whine about how awful it is before they go and get the new one to break again... :sigh:

I do have to say it's impressive how well the touchscreen held up, though. I know a guy with a old iPhone that is mostly cracks at this point, from years of abuse. You can barely see what's on the screen, but the touch still works as good as always.

Higher resolutions are not innovative, they're technology getting better as time goes on. Innovative means new ideas and approaches to problems, and I highly doubt no company has ever thought of putting a higher resolution in to their laptop.

On another note, I bet people are still going to say Google copied apple

That's a funny definition of "innovation". What Apple did there was progress the technology as it would naturally. A higher pixel density is the logical conclusion to display technology. Not a new idea for display technology. And shit, they probably weren't the first to go for silly DPIs, the first probably wasn't a company trying to sell it, just a group of researchers.

Digital camera viewfinders have an even higher DPI than retina displays.

Apple don't invent many technologies, but they make them work, and make them accessible and useful to the average comsumer.

    See:
    *Personal Computers - Apple II
    *Music Players - iPod
*Online store for digital media - iTunes
    *Smartphone - iPhone
    *Touch screen technology - iPhone
    *Tablet Computers - iPad

Take a look at the market before and after the releases of the above products and you'll see what I'm talking about. Take the iPad for instance. Up until the release there was so much doubt whether a tablet computer had any use at all. But it was a huge success, and look where we are today - there is a enormous market for tablets and there just about as common as laptops in my experience. So even if you don't like Apple's products you still benifit from them taking initiative.
