The UI looks great, but it's made for touch devices. It isn't useful for PCs. Also, XP is 10 years older, not really an honest comparison.
Can we put this argument in the ground? It's touch friendly put it's not just for touch devices. Being able to use shortcuts like windows key -> type first few letters -> enter means the average power user can launch steam in much less than a second.

Just adding colour to the Windows logo makes it look so much better.

    I mean come on Microsoft.

I bet the color is supposed to represent how bland win 8 is.

All of Paula Scher's logos are super simple. This one is probably more complex than most she's done.

Look at the Citi logo. Seriously the only thing she really did was add the red curve that is supposed to be an umbrella to the existing logo.

The same is possible in Windows 7. Also, that would open up Steam in desktop mode, since only half of Windows 8 is Metro and the other half uses the same interface as Windows 7, showing no consistency.

Your point is? The start menu is drastically different (improved in my experience), and there's metro. The OS is exactly the same otherwise, and also faster, especially in searches.

Metro is certainly not "half" the OS either. Outside of the start screen, it can be used as much as you wish.

Of course the same is possible in windows 7, that's my point - it's still the desktop OS, it just has a full screen start menu with some new features. The desktop is mostly featureless anyway so it's not like it's inconsistent really.

personally I don't like the logos but like the minimal style. Seeing everyone has an idea of how to do the Windows logo, I figured I'd put my idea out.

My point is that the Metro UX could've been used better for PC specifically.
Right now all they did was copy over the tablet UI and add in the old Windows interface for applications that wouldn't fit in the Metro interface. I would much rather have seen a mix of the two, like this for example.

That does look pretty nice, but you still don't seem to know what you're talking about. They didn't "copy over the tablet UI", this is the desktop UI. Metro was seen first on desktop in the zune desktop software - not on the phone, tablet, or Xbox - but it's no surprise it's there too because it's microsoft's new design standard.

I think it looks better than the current one.

I have no problem with Metro, it's the sleekest looking interface Microsoft has made yet. I don't think it's useful for regular PCs though, at least not in this form. The reason I said they copied over the tablet UI is because everything in Windows 8 except the regular desktop interface looks like it was made with tablets in mind (tiles, panes,...). And the fact that they're announcing their own tablet now makes me think that they really want to make sure they get a bigger marketshare in the tablet department.
But then again, who cares, I'll just keep Windows 7 anyway.

As I've said before this is to attract the ~hip and trendy~ kids that microsoft so desires for some fucking reason, and that apple has already.

Every business and gaming PC in the entire world runs windows, can't we just keep it at that and leave the hip and useless OS to Apple?

i dont understand how making a simple logo means they're catering to the hip and trendy audience

Yeah I don't know where people are getting it either.

They're not trying to appeal to certain people. Minimal design is trending because people honestly think it is more effective.

I prefer their original logo, where you can still see clearly the 13 and 33 hidden in their logo as the number 133 (the 133 is written with straight lines, making it look like a window)

yeah I liked the first apple logo so much better guys

Now seriously, I understand the step wiindows is taking. I think that windows 8 can work for a phone, where eveything is simplified and easy to read for it has some rectangles of different colors and thats it. But for the rest I don't really know if they could make it a bit more memorable. I've seen so many logos that are just "write the name in helvetica" that it's just nothing special really

The new Windows logo just has a very boring look to it, that's all.

They did a lot better than some other companies new logos, like DC

It's kinda bland, but its probably to match the simplicity that's been a trend in logos nowadays. I wish they'd have kept the old font, that little slice of the O was a simplistic way of keeping it exciting.
