Yeah that would make sense because I think the license is only valid for making one game?

I think it depends on the terms of the licensing agreement, but most likely.
It's interesting that the dear esther has a non steam version. What's stopping someone from just using that portal 2 engine binary and using it to run their own game? (assuming you had the portal 2 interfaces)
I guess none, but Dear Esther did make some changes to the BSP format. https://developer.valvesoftware.com/...SP_File_Format
The law does. You'd get sued to hell and back for using unlicensed engine commercially.
It's a good job we're not talking about using any of this commercially, I thought it was pretty obvious I meant for internal research.
Nothing stops you. Dear Esther isn't the first no-Steam Source engine game.
Not my idea, the guy who gave it to me told me to keep it private. There is a partial release floating around though(doesn't have even close to enough to get it to compile though)
I have to agree with mmavirpc. This isn't the kinda thing that should be public. I'm sure that if you have enough of a reason you could acquire it.
Apparently some people are already doing it.
This is already possible without the source code though.
Edit:

and the server will crash the instant someone shoots two portals
Oh? I haven't tried this since Portal 1 was released.
i might have been looking at the licensee dump
Unless you COMPLETELY modify the portals.
Mine is 2.6 gb
1.0 gb base
Can someone teach me how to compile this? I've got Visual C++ Express 2010 installed on my Windows 7 x64 PC, if that matters.
Why would you even want to compile this? If you don't know how to compile this, I'm pretty sure you don't know C++ either.
No, I don't. But I really want to check out these engine/game builds. From what I've seen in that Portal Multiplayer video, it features the pre-release portal gun, portals, crosshair and etc.
All of which are game data, not code.
if they got portal multiplayer working, does that mean we could get hl2 coop with portals?
I don't see why not, however, it is pretty much illegal to use any of this code.
I thought portal had MP code from the start?
Edited:
there was a video i remember watching in 2009 showcasing it off, long before this leak
The code was there but it was not usable for actual gameplay. It simply was there.
Yeah but I remember a group of people (at least 6) on a portal server with a ported version of de_dust
It was real too he showed himself connecting to the server
If you mean this video
They never used the portals because of crashing. Only way to get working Portal MP is to play Portal 2 or fix the leaked code and then make a mod out of it to use the game assets.
I found a working link (very tough google-fu) and might give it out if I confirm it's correct. It is about 160Mb in size, anyone have an MD5?
If people can't find it on their own, then they probably don't have the brains to do anything with it either.
Someone over at a Russian site leaked the leak
What?
EDIT: Sorry, I don't see what's so dumb. How did they leak the leak? They posted a working link?
So, is the compiled version of hammer launchable?
I don't like it...
-snip-
Shit.
Why? Snip that!
Why.
why should he? he's already got the avatar for it im sure he doesnt care what happens
People want it. Should I post it?
no
If people want it they have to find it on their own.
Seriously? It's been on a few public torrent indexers for quite a while.
