I'm one who like the classic theme?

It's easy to do, just rename "C:\Windows\Resource" folder, but LogonUI.exe will crash every second
if anyone know how to bypass LogonUI or login from console (i try RunAs not work) will be happy to know

It's perfectly functional and that's all that matters.
I do see a slight problem, there seems to be excessive padding around the window which ruins the main reason why you'd use the classic theme in the first place.

If your computer can't handle Windows' compositor then classic mode isn't going to save you.

It you find a way to force it off it drops back to Aero Basic which still exists. However if you rename the resources folder it's not going to load Aero Basic for it can't find aero.msstyles.

    taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
    pssuspend.exe winlogon.exe
    taskkill /IM dwm.exe /F

And you need psssuspend from here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896649.aspx
Will drop it out of Aero without winlogon dying.

    To restore:

    pssuspend.exe -r winlogon.exe
    dwm.exe
    c:\windows\explorer.exe

Is there anybody who was able to use the classic theme without LogonUI.exe crash ? How do I have to proceed ?

I tried to rename the ressources folder, I was not able to do it so I renamed its children folder. Nothing hapends so I rebooted the computer and nothing appears. I had to boot on a Linux live CD (my computer is not enough powerful to run virtual machines) in order to rename the ressource folder back to their original names and then Windows works again.

    Thank you !

The padding is actually the same as the default Windows 8 theme. Here's a small app that can edit the size.

I dont know about win 8, but in win 7 you can edit all the border size and window size parameters so you could probably fix that.

There are custom themes which replicate Classic and you'd have a better time using it instead. Explorer requires DWM so even if you suspend winlogon so it doesn't get caught in an infinite loop trying to start DWM, you still wouldn't be able to use Explorer.

Thank you but the theme you given has two problems : it is not compatible with windows 8.1 (I tested it and some people talks about that in comments). The font is still win8's default. My main aim by getting the classic theme is to recover the original default system font (MS sans serif), you may find that strange but that's what I want. I've already success to change back the system font to ms sans serif but the result is not perfect.

Yeah, I like the Classic theme too, and I don't really care for Aero. So I've been pretty interested in this topic. You could try setting your system to automatically log in. That's the only solution I can really think of (outside of writing a new LogonUI.exe that isn't dependent on DWM.exe). The main downside to this is you will lose some features like the login screen and the Ctrl+Alt+Delete screen. And yes, Explorer is also dependent on DWM.exe, so you would need to find a replacement shell. You also need to be willing to give up the Start Screen, because that's DWM/Explorer.exe dependent too. Also, I've heard it's generally not a good idea to have winlogon.exe suspended for too long, so do keep that in mind too. But I don't think you would need to suspend it if aero.msstyles is not on the disk.

Did you rename aero.msstyles? If you did, then I would recommend booting into Windows recovery mode (not safe mode) and using the Command Prompt to restore the original name of aero.msstyles. You can also do the same thing using a Linux boot disk. That's what I would do anyways.

BTW, do you know if you are able to get past the log in screen, or is it just a blank black screen as soon as you boot up your computer?

I renamed the Resources folder. It is a blank screen where my mouse and the wifi icon will occasionally flicker. I'll probably get a Linux disk. Thank you!

    Edited:

I found out you have to hold FN to use F8 when it's booting, so I was able to get to the command prompt and change it back.

Glad to hear, Buster. So if you were able to bypass LogonUI, did you replace the shell (explorer.exe)? This can be done using the registry in this key:
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
There, you can change the value of "Shell" from "Explorer.exe" to any exe file (e.g. "C:\<Path to Alternate Shell>\Application.exe")

Anyways, I might have found a safer way to get the Windows Classic theme. I haven't gotten around to testing it, but this looks like it doesn't need to change/modify/remove any OS files. Take a look for yourself:

That's really helpful thanks. I'm definitely going to try that out. Next time I'll go into a virtual machine before I go messing around in the Windows directory.

Please, teach me how (if possible, how to use that without crashing).
I have lots of W98 themes, and sometimes i would like to use them on Win8, but unfortunately, cant due to the lack of classic theme.
    EDIT:Just read, ohderp.

Probably still wont work with my themes , sad, because it has all of the old themes.

I had to reformat to w7 recently and I prefer classic over w7's areo, at least, since I'm using "Classic colored" steam + copied the colors onto classic windows theme

but metro really takes the cake for me. It's SO NICE that it changes according to my many shuffled wallpapers.

How did you get your taskbar looking like that? Also you can make the rightclick menus look like classic by modifying the registry, but I don't remember where exactly, I think UserPreferencesMask or something like that.

Awsome thank you but... The windows still have a large border and the taskbar is not like yours. I executed all the .reg files and the .exe, reboted the machine and used the "disable taskbar transparency" of ClassicShell.

How did you get the theme management window ?

I use a fresh install of win 8.0 in virtual machine.

    Thank you !

OK for the large border, we must use de DESKN.CPL. There's other settings like background etc... The latest tab seems to be the one where we can set the taskbar but I get an error

"The currently selected graphics display driver can not be used. It is either missing or not properly configured. The system has been started using VGA default driver. Please reinstall the graphics display driver using the Display option in the Windows NT control panel".

Is it due to Virtualbox ?

No it's due to the fact that the deskn.cpl file is from Windows 2000 beta and it can't read Windows 8 display settings properly, so don't worry about the settings section.
