Just a heads up, I'm pushing the Holy Synod to run for any and all offices in Texas now, and pushing for Otto Urban Jr to become governor of the state. If everything works out, after this I will be playing as the state of texas, not the party.

It isn't directed at either of you in particular, I thought I made it quite clear its about the Feds not supporting the states equally and proportionally. Also sno, no need for vulgarity and petty insults lad.
    When did I insult you

As he was valiant, I honor him: but, as he was ambitious, I slew him. - Brutus, Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare
    Events of the years 2368 – 2369:

Current Seat of government of the USA: Chicago
    Veep (Vice President): Elias Saltzmann
President: George Abraham Roosevelt (Personal name Flavio)

Current Seat of government of Surrogate government of the USA: Salt Lake City
Surrogate Veep (Vice President): Larry Nauvoo
Surrogate President: George Abraham Reagan (Personal name Kirtland)

-Conditions continue to worsen. In the federal offices of New York city where the monetary policy of the United States is carried out, a great army of bureaucrats, planners, analysts, and some very powerful computers with petabytes of data being processed every second hums away. They engage in the foolish task of maintaining confidence in a rapidly depreciating currency. But in February a massive attack on the Federal bank in New York by the Patriots followed by riots and then firebombings on tax offices proved to be the final push needed to topple the almighty dollar that in turn lets everything fall into place. A loaf of bread cost 80 dollars in Early February, by March it was 230, and by July it was 1190. Interest rates are increased, price controls updated, and more data is gathered, all for naught. People empty out the last of the gold stocks in the country and begin to abandon dollars wholesale as the last of the market economy finally grinds to a stuttering and complete halt, something completed when the Federal offices in New York are destroyed and with it much of the staff whose job it was to help maintain monetary stability. Attempts to force people to use money and to pay rising taxes fail throughout the early part of the year as prices cease to have any meaning and people stop using money entirely. In older times they would have used another currency, but in the present day USA there is no other currency to use but a few fringe experiments by desperate state governments and precious metals, neither of which may be accepted everywhere and only as a last resort. With resources sparse, transportation difficult, workers unwilling, and machinery malfunctioning, most banks and federal offices that issued local money in times of crisis are completely incapable of handling this one as it far outstrips their ability to respond. The state-fiscal cycle ceases to function by the end of the year in part as a consequence of many other myriad crises, and without it there is no rational way by which surpluses can be redistributed in a remotely rational ( and thus sustainable) way. Banks shortly afterwards become largely meaningless and after their delayed wages don't arrive, the bank staff abandon their posts to go to the countryside to grow cabbages.

-By April, the USA is in the throes of a second profound crisis as uprisings organized by the Patriots break out with alarming regularity and eventually spread to Boston. The Vice president orders federal forces from Ohio to move to New York to help put down the rebellion, but a third and final spanner in the works ruins everything for good. The Zacatecas managed to escape federal field armies by the skin of their teeth as they march west because of the Synods intervention, and in doing so (after a hard march) arrive in California where they begin looting the countryside – a first in two generations. Andrew nonetheless takes the time out of his campaigning to go to Salt Lake City where (along with other pilgrims) he prays for the health of the United States and the people living within it. But the major corporate officers, civil servants, the super ranchers, and members of the senate and house have finally grown tired of him, with the final straw being news that Florida was now refusing to pay their taxes (and other states likely to follow). In July a group of senators meet Andrew in Chicago (he moved the seat of administration once more) where upon entering a meeting room they grabbed him and all took turns telling him how shit he was in a mock trial. The charges largely hinged on his inability to deal with the Patriots, the collapse of the monetary system, and the escape of the Zacatecas to California. They then dragged him outside while he sang the national anthem cheerily and put him against a wall where he refused to wear a blindfold and stood facing his executors. He was shot all at once by a volley fire of automatic rifles over cries of “traitor”.

-Elias Saltzmann is appointed next Vice President and declares that Mormonism would be no longer favored and that he intended to introduce a separation of church and state. He begins by ordering every Mormon politician and official to sign an oath pledging their loyalty to the United States and draws up a list of many to be expelled from office for “connections to traitorous elements and disloyalty”. Following this, numerous attacks on Mormon churches break out throughout many states (especially Texas) with the authorities unwilling to intervene. The furious Mormon states hold a convention in Salt Lake City and on December 28th 2368, they appoint a new Vice President and President and declare that from January 1st they would expel disloyal federal officials, seize Federal properties, and declare themselves as the legitimate United States in opposition to the Chicago government. Saltzmann responds by raising the DEFCON threat level to 1 and bringing the decrepit stockpile of nuclear weapons out of storage, issuing a letter to every state governor informing them of this news and asking them to pledge loyalty to the government. For the first time in over a century, the country is once again at civil war.

    The Patriots - Joshuadim
    Leader: Nathanial Cross
    Home: New York

-At the start of the year, one could be forgiven for thinking New York was on the road to a shaky recovery. But this only held true in New York City where regular shipments of food kept the people fed, for in the countryside there are signs of growing desperation. Rising inflation has eaten away the budget for the government, forced in turn to delay payments to soldiers and officers. In the countryside while many ranches are still willing to send food to NYC, the sharecroppers stop growing cash crops and instead focus on fattening up their livestock and growing food for longterm storage due to having gotten a lot of depreciated money already. The tax collectors arrive and insist on higher taxes to account for the inflation, but the sharecroppers refuse and when the tax collectors arrive with the local police the Patriots intervene by shooting at them and driving them off. Winning a lot of public support, some more begin to join the group and they receive assistance throughout the country (smaller ranches are especially supportive of the Patriots). In the cities (such as NYC) they spread pamphlets railing against the corrupt and incompetent government, although they don't replicate the success that they had in the countryside. To achieve this, something much bolder is required to finally kick everything off. It began with the purchase of thermite and other explosives...

-On a cold February day a group of men met in secret in a bar in Brooklyn, formulating the final details of a plan that had been gestating for quite a few weeks. After a sip of dutch courage each, they all moved into position in and around the Federal bank and monetary policy offices. After calmly walking in, Nathanial Cross declared to the teller he was there to make a withdrawal and promptly pulled out a gun. The rest of his team quickly moved in and took numerous hostages while one of them blasted into a vault with explosives and started piling up the money. Everything was going well for the team until they got to their escape (auto) rickshaw, when one of the policemen recognized Nathanial and started shooting at them. He was hit in the arm while three of the crew went down, forcing him and another Patriot to go on a wild chase through the streets of New York before they crashed into the side of an armoured car and flee on foot. Nathanial slips out barely having escaped with his life, and having lost most of his crew and all of the money. He returns to his base several hours later badly injured.

-The attack over, the staff of the bank began to return a few hours later to assess the damage and one of the computer programmers made himself a coffee and sat down in front of a screen to check his emails. Unfortunately he discovers that during the heist, a program set up to handle unemployment and food credit transactions to the Federal urban poor had been accidentally set to run automatically in the commotion, although nobody knows who. For eight straight hours it issues the entire annual budget about forty times over, by which point people had gone and tried to swap their money for paper notes, gold, and real things like food and other goods. Unable to reverse the damage, it triggers a rapid and uncontrollable inflation in the following months as people firstly try to spend all of their money and then abandon it as pricing becomes impractical. At first attempts are made to restore confidence in the currency through forced price lists, taxes, and selling off the gold reserves until its realized that nothing can be salvaged. Price controls in New York lead to massive shortages as people buy out everything, and later they respond to the chronic shortages by rioting en masse with Patriot agitation. Unlike previous riots the authorities struggle to convince the army and police to help put it down as they are hungry and want to go home, giving the rioters (many led by Patriots) enough time to storm the Federal bank and associated offices where most of the computers are damaged or destroyed and the staff beaten or chased away.

-Following these successes, the countryside begins to bubble and froth with anger. Warm and dry comfortable weather is perfect for rioters, and the weather is on their side for much of the summer and well into fall. Although the Patriots are nominally for a “restoration” of America of some kind, they are horrified when townspeople start burning American flags and cursing the name of the USA. The riots begin to grow outwith their control as more and more tax offices are ransacked in addition to other figures of authority. Some crowds start to attack eagle statuettes and rip them down off buildings and plinths, while others put ropes on the statues of American heroes and topple them. Some of the army begins to mutiny or desert, leaving the police at the mercy of the mob. Inspired by the events in New York, some men in Boston form a new Patriots group where they get carried away and start to attack offices without prompting from Nathanial. Shortly afterwards sharecroppers begin attacking ranchers and chasing them away throughout the northeast, although this quickly ends in August when a massive army from Ohio is mobilized to help put down the rebellion. The New York government appealed for help, and help they did get in November 2368 when the Ohioans arrive in Buffalo and start to "pacify" the western parts of the state (pillaging pro-patriot areas and requisitioning supplies) with the aid of some of the bigger ranchers who fear the chaos. In spite of the civil war, the federal government puts a bounty of 100 trillion dollars on Nathanial and starts a campaign to eradicate the patriots for good.

Commonwealth of Maryland – Native Hunter
    Leader: Jonah Calvert
    Capital: Annapolis

-In April the first men from the Texas campaign began to return from service, decimated and tired but happy to be back home. Jonah Calvert (in spite of the massive deficit) was the first to declare that they would receive a heros welcome, in which he threw massive feasts and public parades for them. A great number of livestock were slaughtered and grilled in BBQs throughout Maryland as a day of celebration was declared. Jonah finished by hosting a great speech on the banks of the Potomac opposite Washington DC, where he lambasted the incompetence of the Federal government and its failures to serve the peoples of America as it once had in the past. Unfortunately, the next few months would test the resolve of Maryland especially.

-The crisis in New York set off a chain reaction of rapid inflation that swept outwards and causes the brittle market economy to crumble. Maryland started off by publishing a new pricing index by which the official prices of products were meant to be sold and bought, but into the summer it became obvious that it was completely unworkable. Mass shortages ruin towns and cities, and people begin to abandon their jobs in government and factories to plant vegetable gardens or move to the ranches in the neverending quest for food. Ruined buildings in what remains of the urban centres are pulled down, with the raw materials and land initially sold off for dollars to the new guilds before later realising that labour and resources were far more valuable. Several workgangs are put to work on clearing debris from roads and metalling them properly in addition to replacing some of the wooden bridges (at great expense) with stone and brick ones. Several guilds find their first niche by employing gangs of former factory workers and landless agricultural workers to cannibalise buildings and turn them into basic manufactured goods such as farming tools, lighters, and stoves. They travel into the countryside to barter them to the ranches and return with food. The government makes attempts to encourage rearing sheep on marginal lands, something mostly practised by smaller sharecroppers who make clothing and mutton out of it. Bigger ranchers still prefer to grow cotton for clothing, and are reluctant to change their habits.

-The breakdown of the national economy is felt everywhere, but Maryland still feels compelled to help their brothers in times of need. Food is sent to Texas to help feed the hungry there (most of it is pilfered by corrupt officials in Houston), while advisors travel to the Gullah Geechee to help them with building a new kind of society from the ashes of the old. In a more profit-oriented sense, the state empowers a guild named “The Baltimore Trading Company” to conduct all official trade through ports owned by the state and overland trade with Pennsilfaani too. Most of this trade is in the form of agricultural goods and some manufactured ones, with Pennsilfaani supplying metals, printed material, and crafts produced in the smaller towns and villages while Maryland exports agricultural produce and some fish products as well. The single railway connecting them suffers many difficulties, but guildworkers later find fruitful work in repairing and maintaining the line and the rolling stock. But it is not just guilds that are doing a great deal of work, but the Catholic Church has been trying something different. Monasticism follows on from the traditions of the Mennonites in many ways, and with Maryland full of people without work (skilled or unskilled) and hope there is ample supply of monastics. A lot of marginal lands that Ranches don't work is turned over to the monasteries, where the monks begin by raising sheep and growing whatever crops they can. Desperately poor and often building their monasteries using whatever materials are available, many of these places are ramshackle constructions that can barely stand. Their inhabitants are often drawn from the dregs of society, and their work is hard and thankless, but a few reach some kind of understanding with the ranches. The ranchers give many monks help to set up schoolhouses for the education of sharecropper children in the ranches in return for them saying prayers in their name. Prayers would be needed as a new civil war looms on the horizon and New York collapses into chaos, and towards the end of the year a letter arrives from the Federal government in Chicago asking for Jonah to pledge loyalty to the union and that in addition they had also declared DEFCON 1 and nuclear weapons were likely to be used against rebels.

    Commonwealth of Pennsilfaani – Griffster26
    Leader: Governor Samuel Lapp
    Capital: Filadelfi

-The tax question is one that engulfs all thoughts of Samuel Lapp during the early winter months, as revenues decline and the state government takes on ever more debt and becomes unable to pay workers. Despite considerable hostility to tax raises, Samuel decides to increase them in line with inflation to help cover expenditures. For a time this barely works as soldiers and civil servants go out to spend their wages as quickly as they get them, keeping the basic market economy functioning for far longer than in most other states. Even after the New York crisis, the Pennsilfaani government makes a heroic (if vain) effort to keep the wheels turning and the machinery operating. As inflation worsens, the government employees even take to issuing IOU notes and continuing to try spending and collecting revenues as much as possible. This helps to a degree with the ongoing projects intended to make the state more self-sufficient. A number of coal mines are reopened to help provide fuel for heating and for the railways, and some attempts to find oil and natural gas for extraction are made likewise. Unfortunately, no new sources of oil nor gas can be found and the endeavour ends in failure. Instead workers travel to the coal mines to hack out the rich anthracite which is often processed into coke or sold wholesale on handcarts throughout the country. The death penalty is quietly abandoned in the middle of all this. The ranchers and smaller farmers continue to operate much as they have had before, but as the year drags on and chaos slowly envelops the country it becomes increasingly clear that they can no longer function as before.

-The latter half of the year sees the state-fiscal cycle steadily break down to nothing as dollars become increasingly meaningless. The Mennonites however don't seem to particularly care since many of them are already self-sufficient and produce largely for themselves. While this didn't engender itself to wealth creation, it means that the collapse of the dollar has barely affected them. Tax collectors are eventually forced to begin conscripting labour and taking resources in kind to help feed the army and the cities, although the ranchers and Mennonite colonies complain bitterly about this and demand a new arrangement on the basis that these high demands made of them will eventually ruin them. What exists of trade meanwhile eventually boils down to a kind of officially sanctioned bartering arrangement that quickly forms after the collapse of the dollar, whereby Pennsilfaani will sell coal and some manufactured goods to Maryland in return for food. While it is very difficult to maintain, the strained railways and the trade made possible by the Baltimore Trading Company allows Pennsilfaani to export just enough manufactured goods (Mennonites are much more willing to part with them instead of food) to pay for food imports to feed the cities. But it is one that is breaking the bank and the militias often have to suffer through pay arrears. While unruly they remain loyal for now. Bigger problems seem to be manifesting in the wake of the death of the Vice President and the growing division of the country into two halves. The federal government is nonetheless happy that Samuel Lapp showed loyalty to the government for not only continuing to pay taxes for as long as possible, but that they denounced the Patriots and Florida heavily in addition. The new Veep Elias Saltzmann offers Pennsilfaani assistance and increased powers and privileges in the east (ignoring minor quibbles) in return for crushing the Patriots and in securing the east for the Chicago government.

Republic of Florida – Snoberry Tea
    Leader: Jebediah Deitrich III
    Capital: Tallahassee

-With the crisis in Texas seemingly winding down, the brave men of Florida began to slowly return only to discover that a new one was now broiling away up in New York. Economic troubles sap public confidence as inflation rises and workers are furloughed in wake of money shortfalls. The problem worsens after the activities of the Patriots and by April the rapidly escalating inflation and breakdown in the money economy slowly but surely ruins the careful planning of Jebediah he had organised for Florida after the war. For instance in order to satisfy the ranchers he offered a 10% tax break to ranches to begin switching from livestock to food crops such as corn, okra, and tomatoes. He further introduced a 20% tax break to the first 10% of ranches who would switch to cotton, tobacco, and other cash crops, and additionally cut taxes sent to the Federal government by 50%. All of these measures are rendered utterly defunct by the collapse of the dollar, which by the end of the summer has inflated in value and become so useless for everyday purposes as to render all of these policies dead in the water. The Federal government is however extremely upset by the tax reductions, especially given the inflation from last year (and continuing into this one) and drops Florida from their group of preferred states to instead focus on Pennsilfaani after the governor Samuel Lapp made a public speech openly lambasting Florida for its disloyalty. With the breakdown of the money economy, other aspects of society begin to slowly follow soon afterwards.

-The state-owned factories operated by Florida continue to produce booze, although their production was halved and now the focus was put onto processing the food for longer term preservation (canning and pickling). While people are obviously upset by the news, most of the alcohol was exported anyways and with national trade now breaking down there is little point in exchanging alcohol for a rapidly depreciating currency. While many ranchers ignored the earlier tax reforms they are still happy enough to send crops to the cities in lieu of taxes (although in real terms tax burdens are much much lower). The state-operated fishing industry likewise continues to hum away, with fishermen catching fish to be brought back to the canneries for processing. The coastguard often travels with them to protect them from pirates, whose numbers have begun to slowly rise as the economy breaks down in other states and to a degree within Florida itself. By September it becomes pretty clear that wages won't come at all, and so the state is forced into instead distributing rationed food to factory workers and soldiers in lieu of payments. They take it a step further by immediately using the canned food itself as a means of exchange, with tinned tomatoes and tuna now used as a form of crude money. Lighters, some electronics, and cigarettes in addition to cloth are all used from time to time as money but it is obvious that there are major difficulties with this. Part of the problem is that the materials needed to manufacture cans originate from outside of the state, and as rail deliveries slow down and orders are subject to endless delays and nonpayments lead to the breakdown of interstate trade, the canning factories are starting to run dangerously low on supplies. Eventually the Florida government cancels wages to avoid a last-minute default.

-Towards the end of the year, more problems begin mounting as it becomes obvious the country is heading towards a civil war. The Catholic Church quietly pretends otherwise, investing considerable resources into building churches and housing in the Gullah state with the Good Works agency (despite a lack of resources), although the Gullah state quickly takes over food distribution. This kindness is not readily repaid to the ranchers there, who suffer in court cases presided over by Dr Antwon. Without the backing of the Federal government nor Florida, many of these ranchers have their lands seized by Antwon and redistributed amongst the people despite frequent pleas to Jebediah to intervene. Many of them flee to Florida and complain bitterly to both Federal and Florida authorities for the loss of their land, to which Jebediah responds by giving them new lands owned by the state. Unfortunately little of it could ever come close to replacing their old estates, and the ranchers grow angrier. Many of them (mainly in the Gullah and northeast Florida) begin to raise small bodyguards and other militia units to defend their lands. Adding onto all of these headaches, after the US government splits into two Jebediah receives a letter from the Chicago government demanding his loyalty in the conflict. To show he is serious, he includes a note informing him that the DEFCON threat level had been raised to 1 and the nuclear stockpile was being brought out of retirement.

Order of the Holy Synod – Emperor Scorpious II
    Leader: Reverend Otto Urban Jr
    Capital: Dallas

-Although the hordes have left Texas, trouble has yet to do so. It worsens. The ongoing collapse of the dollar escalates after the troubles in New York worsen. Mormon attacks on Catholic churches likewise escalate as the badly paid police forces eventually abandon their posts, leaving the Synod to pick up the slack in their absence. Heavily armed militias patrol churches and holy sites now, often doubling in number during mass to ensure the safety of the flock. This is especially the case in Dallas where their headquarters and a greater number of Mormons reside, with Otto insisting that the headquarters be reinforced against small-arms fire and many of the doors welded shut to prevent easy entry. Having done this, Otto goes around Texas holding rallies imploring all good Catholics to seek political office (from clerks to senators) and for everybody else who would bother to listen to vote for them likewise. Usually this involves rattling off a list of their accomplishments, such as convincing the Zacatecas to turn away (although some cynically point out that it helped them escape the federal army), their charitable work in helping to provide food and shelter for refugees, plus their current ongoing work into helping to resettle the hordes and integrating them into American society. A mass movement of Catholics in the countryside (less so in the cities) become angrier and increase their demands for snap elections. In July the Vice President was executed for treason, and as a way of maintaining a break with the past, the new one (Saltzmann) puts pressure on the Texas government to hold new elections in the hopes of winning support for the new Chicago administration. The results give the Synod considerable power throughout the countryside, but they fail to win the governorship. Luckily for them the new Vice President Saltzmann has given Otto an offer to be made governor of Texas in return for helping to defend the border and to help shore up Federal control in the Southwest. Saltzmann makes it clear that the Mormons are forming a rival government in the west and if Texas is unwilling to support the Chicago government they will be unable to count on his support.

-Outside of the political power games, Texas sees many of the events afflicting America play out here, but a magnitude of order much worse. The collapse of the dollar has left many soldiers and civil servants in Houston (and the wall) unable to buy goods and services, and with it the entire economy of Texas begins to steadily grind to a halt. The markets collapse into a kind of barter economy, and although the soldiers are being paid in food nobody is sure how long federal food deliveries to Houston will continue for. The churches pick up much of the slack, to the extent where they become primarily responsible for helping to resettle the Mexican hordes and win much of their trust, enough to the extent that the druglords give permission to the missionaries to build churches and other facilities for the faithful there (much of the horde tends to be nominally christian) and to win their support. Many of them begin to join the Synod and work with the knights to maintain the peace through regular patrols, but as food supplies from the federal government slowly diminish this might not hold true forever – their new lands aren't producing nearly enough food to keep them fed. Other church projects are much more difficult to carry out, such as an attempt in Austin to build a seminary for the study of natural sciences. Most of the staff there try to collect scrap mechanical parts and cobble together teams to build refrigerators, with a degree of mixed success. Most people aren't too worried about rebuilding fridges, but instead the fact that tens of thousands of federal soldiers are starting to run out of basic supplies. No longer is their food being delivered by the rapidly collapsing distribution networks, and so they are starting to live off the fat of the surrounding countryside. Inside empty towers in ragged uniforms, the last demoralized American soldiers on the Trumpetine wall make stews out of whatever they can find while the Mexican hordes to the south over the Rio Grande watch the tattered flags fluttering over the battlements closely.

Provisional state of Gullah Geechee Protectorate – Amfleet
Leader: The Reverend Dr. Antwon Mviluki
    Capital: Brunswick

-Although poor and on the edge, the Gullah Geechee more or less saunter through this year like nothing much has really happened in the wider world. With the dollar becoming useless and eventually falling out of circulation the wider market economy in turn comes apart at the seams. Here however this is barely noticed for the simple reason that the bulk of the population is already quite poor and mostly lives by subsistence agriculture and fishing. But Dr Antwon faced a problem when it came to paying the wages of civil servants and the national militia, something he solved in a most cunning and illegal way. In June (by which point dollars are being used as fuel in Brunswick), Antwon introduces the Gullah Shilling. While it is illegal to print money without prior approval from the Federal government, the lack of a clear authority and the eventual outbreak of civil war towards the end of the year pretty much allows the Gullah to do as they please (especially since they are one of the poorest and most marginal states). The shilling is largely backed through a kind of simple land tax and tariff duty scheme, the proceeds of which are collected together into a state bank that was also set up this year. Since the shillings are largely worthless to begin with and rarely used, people are only too happy to pay taxes with them. Purchases are another matter entirely though, for the great ranchers of the state are deeply opposed to giving away their lands. With the collapse of central authority, Antwon begins to really flex his powers and remake society.

-Taking all of the big names to court, the good reverend begins the trial by reminding the ranchers that they can no longer rely on the protection of their benefactors. To drive this point home, he filled the courtroom full of black panthers from the national militia, many of them heavily armed and trained with some help from Maryland military advisors. The charges laid out stressed the loss of freedoms among the sharecroppers, the unequal distribution of land, and a number of invented crimes. They were given an offer to either improve working and living conditions and to additionally pay taxes, or face the risk of having their lands forcibly seized by the state. Several called his bluff and called on Florida to help them, only to be ignored. The result was a number of the biggest ranches having several massive areas of prime farmland cleaved off and being brought into state ownership through eminent domain. A number of other ranches are dissolved completely when the ranchers hire a number of bandits and deserters to defend their property from the state, who responds by sending in the Black Panthers to shoot at them and seize their properties in their entirety. After no official response comes from the central government nor Florida, the remaining ranchers concede to the demands of Dr Antwon and sell off several portions of poorer land in addition to granting their sharecroppers greater rights.

-These bold moves won the good reverend a great deal of support among the common people, especially after he began renting out the state-owned land to people to farm and often either collecting the duty either in shillings or in kind. The proceeds of this endeavour help to prop up the state bank, and allow him to pay for food deliveries to the poor who cannot afford to eat. Throughout the latter part of the year, the success of his experiments allows the good doctor to enact even more reforms as he introduces a crop-insurance fund, a farm equipment cooperative, and also opening up trade with Maryland. Although the state is pretty poor, Maryland is happy enough to accept salted fish in return for goods such as books on practical crafts and sacks of flour and grain for making into bread. A number of those without work in Hilton Head are taught how to practice carpentry and with the assistance of the Catholic good works agency (which establishes itself here), they quickly erect a number of simple wooden framed houses and chapels to house people in. By the end of the year, the housing crisis is largely over, although conditions have hardly improved due to the lack of adequate sanitation and many other public facilities. A few workshops which attempt to do metal and woodworking are built, but without easy access to raw materials nor skilled labour they struggle to operate. The lack of cheap transport compounds issues further, for the roads are in terrible condition and much of the interior is filled with swamps and marshes.

-With most people still without land or skills to make use of, Antwon decides to put them to work on land reclamation and irrigation projects. This mostly involved digging ditches, erecting levees, the construction of numerous polders, and draining the numerous swamps. A few managed rivers and canals are left behind for barges to carry goods on, although little has been done to advance this further and few people use the tiny and poorly managed canals. Some of the reclaimed land is immediately put to work on growing the new crops Antwon is particularly keen on having grown (tomatoes, lettuce, squash, etc), although there is still not enough land nor employment for most people and their children. With few other ideas available, he orders people to collect faecal matter off the streets and in the country to be collect together and matured in pits for processing into methane from which they can power simple electricity generators. The lack of a proper means of collecting the waste (plus tanners and farmers pilfering it) makes production difficult but eventually there are dim electric lights shining for the first time in these ramshackle wooden towns. By the end of the year, people are feeling confident for the first time that some real progress has been made to better their lives. Most of them are blissfully unaware of the developments out far west, especially once at the end of the year a civil war breaks out. Possibly because of unawareness or weakened government control Antwon receives no letters from the federal government about what to do in the civil war, although tensions seem to be rising in the neighbouring states.

Unless he's devised a machine that specifically stops rain in Texas, I don't think I'll suffer too much.

"Patriots sympathizers in New York City have managed to garner the launch codes for America's nuclear arsenal and have rained nuclear fire down upon the country, filling the skies with ash and reducing any rainfall to toxic, grey water that kills plants and burns people."

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. - Matthew 24:6
    Events of the years 2369 – 2370:

Current Seat of government of the USA: Chicago
    Veep (Vice President): Elias Saltzmann
President: George Abraham Roosevelt (Personal name Flavio)

Current Seat of government of Surrogate government of the USA: Salt Lake City
Surrogate Veep (Vice President): Larry Nauvoo
Surrogate President: George Abraham Reagan (Personal name Kirtland)

-On the 1st of January 2369, all over the Western United states heavily armed men marched on the properties and facilities of the Federal government and seized them. Many of the soldiers were outgunned, demoralized, and unwilling to make much of an effort to protect either themselves or the country that they stood for, gave in to the rebel forces without a fight. There were a few exceptions, such as in San Francisco where a massive number of Federal Soldiers were stationed in a number of forts and other bases scattered around there. Unwilling to back down against the Mormons, both sides set up artillery batteries and pounded one another relentlessly for days, in the process hitting and heavily damaging the nationalized electronics factories. On January 4th 2369, the last silicon microchip in the world was made. Shortly afterwards both sides ran out of shells and the Mormons assaulted the fort through the breaches and bayoneted the garrison while the workers fled into the city and countryside. Despite the best efforts of the occupying force to return the workers to the facilities, few of them could be found nor could the facilities be repaired back to working order. Shortly afterwards, the Mormon Veep Larry Nauvoo made a Federal radio announcement hoping to end the war as soon as possible and to rebuild the damaged federation, adding “America has always bounced back, and this time it won't be any different.)

-After a major uprising in New York, Nathanial Cross declares himself a “President” despite the complete lack of any power outside of New York, earning him the ire of both the Salt Lake and Chicago governments as it heavily undermines both presidents. The press declare it “The War of the Three Presidents”, a name which unfortunately for all participants manages to stick in spite of attempts to rename it as something more politically convenient. By the time a number of journalists are arrested, the common people are already calling it by that name. The opening moves of the war begin with the Mormons seizing control of much of the West Coast (including the Californian wall) and laying siege to Los Angeles , while the Federal authorities have raised an army of half a million men in the Midwest and have begun reactivating the numerous nuclear bombs and sending out drones and whatever other aircraft they have. They march west into Kansas, Dakota, and Nebraska to arrest Mormon politicians and clear away raiding parties before they mass in . Following this they split up their army into three columns with one to go through Wyoming into the Northwest to pacify the region, the second to march south into New Mexico, and the third finally to march on Salt Lake city itself. During the hot July the Federal forces manage to reach Denver and subject the defenses to a brutal bombing campaign in which drones are used to drive the defenders away while artillery batters holes in them. Following this the Federal army breaks into the city and overwhelms the defenders in harsh street-to-street fighting before seizing the city.

-Over the next few months there are numerous successes (in spite of setbacks in Alaska and Western Canada) made by the Federal government as it marches west with most of its forces brought to bear. Unlike previous conflicts, they sustain their advance primarily by heavily looting the countryside of food and other resources due to the breakdown in logistics that made traditional methods impossible. In New Mexico they force the garrison of Albuquerque to surrender after shelling some of their positions, before fighting with the Mormons in a major battle in western New Mexico. The Wyoming forces meanwhile set themselves at liberty to pillage from the countryside as they march towards Oregon, yet are plagued by constant skirmishes and are forced to split up to cover more land as they pacify the country. By October much of Colorado has been subdued in addition to New Mexico and Arizona, allowing the federal armies to march on Salt Lake City and towards Los Angeles with the hope of relieving the siege on LA, although they first camp outside of the Californian Wall to wait for their artillery to catch up on the march through Arizona. Unfortunately for the Feds both Texas and Florida declared their independence on November 5th, followed in turn by the Cuetes and Sinaloa declaring that they would seek a new path for themselves as they promptly left Texas and marched into Arkansas and Missouri, leaving a path of destruction in their wake while the Federal and Texan armies start fighting with one another and are too preoccupied to prevent their movements (and that of the other Mexican groups and Mormon rebellions). Although both Florida and Texas do not officially refer to their leaders as Presidents in the same way, their acts of secession have lead many to call this new expanded conflict “The War of the Five Presidents” as the country is gradually swallowed up in the chaos.

-Capos from Sonora and their retinues begin raiding Baja California in the latter half of the year, and the beleagured inhabitants send a desperate petition to the Chicago government begging for help. He sends a reply saying “Look to your own defenses” as the raids pick up in intensity. By the end of the year, several towns have been seized and refugees start to stream northwards. The soldiers on the “New” Trumpetine wall bordering the Sonora begin to worry and talk is made of pulling back to the older wall to the north.

Free State of New York - Joshuadim
    Leader: Nathanial Cross
    Capital: New York City

-New York is descending into chaos, sucking everything into a vortex. On the western borders of the state, a massive army from Ohio arrived to return order. Led by Bradley Kennedy “The stern”, they occupied Buffalo and ordered mass arrests and began rooting through the city to look for Patriots. Those that they found were summarily hanged from rusted lampposts along the highways leading east, and then they started to have problems. Without regular payments and with the ranches unwilling to send foods to the distribution centres in cities, feeding this Ohioan army in the traditional way was rendered impossible and so the army had to “live by the fat of the land”. After wintering in the city for a short while, they began requisitioning food from the general populace and then later turned to looting houses as time went on. The sharecroppers and various townspeople began demonstrating and rioting, but were shot at and forced to flee as repressions were mounted up. The order was made clear: Eliminate the patriots. By March they were marching on New York while summarily restoring order with a brutal hand. As the line of men hung from trees approached the Big Apple, the residents of the city feared what would happen next.

-Nathanial comes up with an insane plan, one which calls for the seizure of power. As law and order break down, with the economy in tatters, and authorities powerless to help, many soldiers desert their posts and some join the Patriots. Public approval of the government worsens especially once Saltzmann denounces the New York authorities for their ineptitude and declares that the state would be now administered directly, placed under martial law, and NYC would have its special privileges removed. On the 1st of February, the Patriots incite rioters to attack the Federal grain stores and arsenals before moving onto Manhattan. The authorities station snipers on the roofs to shoot the rioters, but the Patriots were able to grab them and throw them off the high stories to the cheers of the crowds below. The mobs break into the prisons and free many of those (including Patriots) trapped inside, who then steal guns and begin swarming the rest of the city. Cars, booze, and drugs are stolen from the rich, who are thrown out of the buildings onto the streets below or are otherwise publicly lynched. Mass pogroms break out, resulting in the death of many of the parasites in the city. Other looters simply get drunk and commandeer automobiles, cruising down the streets at high speeds to look for these parasites, often taking potshots at various lawyers and anybody else wearing a Kippah. The next day they eventually found their way to the state capitol on the island and broke their way in and defenestrated the politicians and bureaucrats there. Nathanial then held a public radio announcement to all corners of the state (and various other parts of America) where he declared the following in a speech:

Speech by Acting President Nathanial Cross of the Free State of New York
    February 2nd, 2369

Citizens of New York, I come today to announce the establishment of the Free State of New York. No longer will you suffer under the tyranny of the false government of the United States. Now, we carve our own destiny as we forge our own path to the future. This is a victory for every person in New York. Soon, New England shall join us in unity and in strength to fight the false federal government. We will never surrender and submit again to the tyranny of corruption and political games in the West. Now is the time of the East. I will act as President until we have secured our place in the world and victory, and elections will be held afterwards.•

This cause is just, for the free people of New York will never fall.

Be strong, glorious people of New York!
-Having declared himself President, his first action is to call for all patriot groups to rise in rebellion. The Patriots outside of Boston attempt to replay the events of the American revolution by attempting to raise their rebellion at Boston where they chase away some police and military forces and declare their revolt. In good spirits they then marched out to meet the Feds at Concord and Lexington and were decimated by drone strikes (killing a lot of civilians by accident), forcing them to retreat to Boston. There the Federal army then cut off the water, electricity, and transport into the city and started to shell defensive positions. Unable to respond the battered Patriots surrendered and were summarily rounded up and executed en masse. In the space of an entire week a revolt was crushed, and with the activities there crushed the Feds began mobilizing more men and marched on New York, prompting Nathanial to order the construction of numerous barricades on all the bridges and roads leading to the city. Despite being crushed in open battle, the Patriots in New England are still active (aided by a growing number of Mormons in the northeast who harbor sympathies for the Salt Lake government and fear of the Chicago one), yet were spared by the Feds being redirected to focus on besieging New York first.

-As preparations are underway, food supplies into the city are immediately cut off and quite rapidly hunger sets in by the end of February especially as normal life comes to an end in the city. To tackle this problem, Nathanial opens up an “Office of work assignments” which immediately begins tasking people without work to construct the defenses necessary and on the vegetable plots in the green areas in addition to stockpiling weaponry. In the grim economics of this society, there is only one law. Food is to be given out as a reward for good behaviour, or withheld as punishment. The more people die or leave the city, the more food there is for everyone else. Voting with their feet, many people abandon the city in the weeks following the cessation of regular food shipments. The rest are organized into workgangs that pile up rubble in the streets and requisition the properties of the rich. Former employees of the state are allowed to retain their positions in return for declaring loyalty to the new regime, and although a lot of them take the opportunity to flee most of them remain on for now, if only to get food to eat. Public show trials are held for the former rulers of New York, where they are executed by being forced to swim in the icy Hudson river at gunpoint until they freeze to death. The new regime faces big problems however as food supplies contract and the army from Ohio arrives in March to lay siege with assistance from the Feds. Over the rest of the year they slowly surround the city, taking care not to cause damage beyond a few select parts of the defences due to the city being considered too important to have in ruins. The battered residents are put to work repairing the damage as best as they can, but under the stress of hunger and the outbreaks of disease many of them die. In November soldiers from Pennsilfaani manage to occupy the rest of Long Island and push the defenders out of much of the poorly fortified eastern parts of the city. Food supplies now critically low and their numbers dwindling, the Patriots are unable to hold out for much longer.

Commonwealth of Maryland – Native Hunter
    Leader: Jonah Calvert
    Capital: Annapolis

-The currency crisis is the latest in a long line of troubles to plague the battered federation of the United States, one that in combination with the civil war could threaten to tear it apart for good. In his capacity as govenor and having heard of experiments by the Dr Antwon of the Gullah, he comes up with a bold proposal to reform the currency of the United States in a last ditch effort to restore economic stability and unclog the arteries as transportation breaks down. He sends a letter to Saltzmann signed also by Samuel Lapp and a number of other state governors in the east for a great currency reform. The plan is certainly a bold one, as it calls for the currency to be decentralized to various regions (with certain state governors having the power to issue monies). The Chicago government approves of the plan and gives a number of state governors and federal cities the power to issue currency, with Washington DC now issuing the “Chesapeake Dollar” which covers Maryland and Virginia. The existing financial structures and institutions are reorganised so that each new currency has its own regional bank which works in cooperation with the federal bank to control exchange rates, set prices, and maintain economic stability. Over the course of the year this new policy is rolled out to great effect as the economy begins to chug back into motion and confidence is slowly restored in the economy. Saltzmann later asks Calvert to help provide military support in suppressing the Patriots, but due to the high loss of life he is only willing to offer naval support, something that the Chicago president accepts anyways. After the uprising in New York, Maryland sends the coastguard to the city to help secure a blockade on the city and to catch smuggles, later playing a crucial role in ferrying Pennsilfaani soldiers over the sea to Long Island to help in the siege.

-Maryland begins receiving the first grants of Chesapeake dollars during the spring, with that new freshly printed smell. Now they can really begin to kickstart some projects that were shelved last year, and so a number of binders have their dust blown off and are poured over. The first order of business (after paying the soldiers) was to begin a large-scale scrapping program, and despite official efforts to restrict illegally stripping public infrastructure with a small fine hordes of people swarm the highways and cities looking for all kinds of metal. Lead is torn off of roofs, metal piping is pulled up, copper wiring is stripped down, and many others attack lampposts with hacksaws. Only the railways, official government facilities, active factories, occupied households, and ports survive the thieving. Many artisans also get to work on circumventing the law by buying the metal off the scrappers and melting it down and processing it into other items for sale to the state. In particular one guild received the attention of Maryland after the craftsmen begun to produce bolt-action rifles of a quality nearing that of older factory models. Pleased with the artisans, Jonah begins placing orders for these guns to fill arsenals around the state, perhaps unaware of the fact many of them are made from stolen scrap metal.

-The other guilds are busy with reviving construction skills, in particular the “New Masons” (named for the fact they are actual Masons instead of the old Freemasons) who are are gathered together for a grand project. Due to the serious decay of many of the stone monuments in Washington DC, they are sent there to help carry out repairs and restoration work on the ruins of the White House (later reopening it once more for public tours), the Washington Monument, and other sites throughout the city. It comes at the expense of Maryland, doing it in return for favourable trading arrangements with the city and to win Federal approval. After many such repairs are carried out, the Chicago government praises Maryland for its patriotism and begins arranging for new projects to be carried out in the area and grants the governor more say in the politics of DC and powers to use in the south (much like how Pennsilfaani has been granted similar powers in New York and New Jersey). Using these powers, Maryland is able to sign beneficial trading agreements and treaties to repair and maintain infrastructure with Virginia and DC in addition to establishing guild branches in those states as well. Due to both Maryland and Pennsilfaani often working together and being quite cooperative, they start to form a natural block of stability on the east coast to which many refugees are travelling to find employment or otherwise a better life. The fact that during the summer both states signed a deal to share control of the Delaware only confirms this.

-Economy stability has allowed other new projects to come about this year, particularly in the countryside where a number of new proposals have come about to benefit the growing rural population. A lot of sharecroppers otherwise without work due to the season nature of agriculture are snapped up by the state to work on various projects, the ranchers only being happy to allow this for these projects tend to also benefit them. For the most part this meant digging ditches and raising earthen dikes throughout much of the waterlogged areas of the state, allowing once formerly unprofitable lands to become economically viable once more. The lack of facilities to actively remove water is a restraint however, and with the wetter climate while it is easy enough to help drain water away, it is very hard to keep places dry for long. A number of ranches also begin setting up beehives to generate honey, and constructing distilleries to produce whiskies and other spirits on site as a way to keep idle sharecroppers busy with producing goods for export now that the markets are starting to function once more. The state of course takes a cut, and begins filling up the coffers once more. Despite some rainy weather the harvest is good and people feel confident enough to throw thanksgiving feasts which are rather more sumptuous than usual. Jonah Calvert and some ranchers however manages to annoy a lot of hungry people by making appeals for them to fast, something that hardly changes food prices (as he had hoped).

-The year slowly comes to an end, although not without new problems that threaten to throw a wrench into everything achieved up until that point. Texas and much of the Southeast declares independence from the United States of America after many Federal soldiers are diverted to help with the war in the west. Virginia declares a state of emergency and immediately mobilises its militias and any existing federal forces left there to arrest pro-secessionist politicians and then marches south into Raleigh to seize control over the northern parts of Carolina before the Confederate States of America (as it calls itself) does. The Gullah state is left in a desperate position as the sole Unionist holdout in the area, while numerous uprisings of sharecroppers erupt throughout the south. Responding to the panic, Saltzmann orders an emergency federal detachment with drones and nuclear bombs to station Washington DC for protection and asks Maryland and Virginia to help with putting down the rebellion. In return the states would be given a number of undefined powers to do as they pleased throughout the south as long as they helped to suppress the challenge to Federal rule. A growing number of black sharecroppers and some Gullah also appeal for help as the south slides into chaos.

    Commonwealth of Pennsilfaani – Griffster26
    Leader: Governor Samuel Lapp
    Capital: Filadelfi

-With the Federal government in crisis, they would be pleased to know that Pennsilfaani has declared itself not only loyal to the Union, but is actively taking steps to suppress rebellion and restore order to the east coast. While the residents of the state are normally cold to intervening in outsider politics, the rise of attacks by Patriot-minded rebels and the fact New York is erupting into chaos changes their mind quite quickly. A large force is mobilized and begins by marching into New York where they begin attacking ranches suspected to harbour Patriots and rooting out their terrorist cells likewise. After Nathanial declared himself President and seized control of New York City, Samuel responded by simply marching into New Jersey and in April setting up a small artillery battery on Staten Island from which he could target any remaining shipping (typically smugglers) going into the city. With New Jersey effectively occupied, the cowed officials agree to a trade deal with Pensilfaani and later the Federal government grants the governor further powers to do as he wishes. The Governor of Ohio offers a deal with Pennsilfaani to split up the state of New York how they pleased, something approved by Veep Saltzmann if they manage to suppress the rebellion entirely.

-Over the rest of the year, a number of beneficial reforms are introduced to help restore economic stability and restore confidence to the government. A new monetary policy is rolled out whereby different regions are granted the right to issue their own currencies, with Pennsilfaani being granted the right to issue money of their own choosing in areas of their control (including parts of New York and New Jersey at present), and towards the summer several new printing houses begin to distribute new dollar bills. Soon after general circulation recovers, trade with Maryland is revived (aided by a deal whereby both states would share the Delaware) and things slowly seem to return to a kind of normality. Trade schools based upon those in Maryland are established in the urban centres to help train the people in practical crafts, a process made much easier by the fact that a lot of Mennonites already have these skills and are very much willing to volunteer their time for education. By the autumn the forces in New York have managed to seize control of large areas of the state and soon afterwards a daring assault is made upon Long Island where the Patriots are forced to flee into the city proper and all exits and entrances are finally blocked. Despite the siege having brought the Patriots to breaking point by November, both Texas and Florida break away from the union (the latter taking a number of states with it) and creating an entirely new headache for the Feds. Being unable to quickly transfer manpower, Saltzmann asks Samuel Lapp and Jonah Calvert to help put down the secessionist movement in the south by any means possible. In return for doing this he would be granted access not only to Federal facilities and equipment, but would given the power to do as he wished in the southern states so long as he returned them to the Union.

Confederate States of America – Snoberry Tea
    Leader: Jebediah Deitrich III
    Capital: Tallahassee

-Economic troubles have wrecked havoc on the agrarian export economy of Florida, and after the currency collapsed they came to their own solution of switching to a purely “in-kind” economy and opted more or less to abandon money entirely, even after the Maryland monetary reform which saw control over issuance of currency decentralized out to various regions and states. Now the ranchers have to set aside an eye-watering 40% of their land to grow crops demanded by the state (such as cotton, tobacco, and various other crops) for the first year, and then 30% the next and 20% for all years thereafter. Understandably they interpret “arable land” very loosely and pick the poor land for growing crops on, leading in turn to a poorer harvest than expected. It is however enough to replace at least half of the old budget in practice and now state-ration cards have been issued to industrial workers and soldiers throughout the state. The more important your job, the bigger an allocation you receive, and immediately these cards begin to be used as a kind of crude currency. Alcohol and food in addition to tobacco is handed out as part of a regular ration, and soon enough the factories are running again and the soldiers are back on active duty. The lack of raw materials for a lot of industry forces the canning plants to switch to Mason jars to preserve food. This in turn entailed the construction of several glassworks and soda-lime plants throughout the state.

-Jebediah acknowledges Federal demands for support, maintaining the regular supply of food shipments to Houston while simultaneously going on tours throughout the southern states to talk with politicians and various ranchers about secession. As the civil war boiled away in the west and the Patriots rose in full-scale rebellion in the northeast, Jebediah thought the time was ripe for splitting away from the Union. Many ranchers agreed for although Florida had done a shoddy job of resolving the sharecropper problem, they felt that the talk of becoming a Confederacy and having the power to do as they pleased within it was very appealing – especially since Florida offered to help foot much of the bill for national defence. The states began quietly currying the loyalty of Federal units throughout the south and introducing reforms similar to those in Florida – although due to Jebediahs insistence on talking to politicians in every state led to the plans being inevitably leaked in late October as the conspiracy grew. Acting quickly, Florida declared independence on November 5th 2369, the very same day that Texas also did so. The states of Georgia, Carolina, and Tennessee quickly followed, although the states further west delayed joining long enough that by the time they were preparing to leave, the Sinaloa and Cuetes arrived in Arkansas and Missouri and began pillaging the country. Virginia outright refused to join because of heavy pressure from Maryland to remain in the Union, and the Governor himself went a step further and mobilized the militias and went on to occupy Raleigh and much of Northeastern Carolina. Dr Antwon of the Gullah then stayed quiet and declared continued support for the union. A bad start to the war.

-Nonetheless, all of the leaders are confident and begin with a mass-enlistment campaign. Rations to new recruits are immediately increased by 25% to encourage more men to sign up for the army, which helps to pad out the numbers nicely (conscription ends up being utilized in other states to help bolster the numbers, especially in Carolina). Then in a rather bizarre move Jebediah orders the defence works of Floridian cities dismantled and transferred to the front to help reinforce the cities after the sudden capture of Raleigh. The rail network is put to good effect in moving around the vast numbers of soldiers, and within a month of declaring independence they manage to reinforce the borders of the states and seize control over virtually all Federal properties and units (or otherwise force them to flee). Unfortunately the reluctance of the Gullah Geechee to join the Confederacy has proven a major sticking point in the whole plan, and with tensions inflamed by the recent conflicts numerous sharecroppers throughout the US south are raising demands for states of their own. The Ebonian rebellions break out at the end of the year, spreading like wildfire throughout many ranches. Many of the soldiers destined for the front are forced to be pulled back to help put them down and restore order. Although they are largely successful in most engagements with the sharecroppers, a lot of them have begun fleeing east to the Gullah protectorate and despite the demands of the Ranchers to have them repatriated Dr Antwon has refused to do so yet for unspecified reasons. With forces mobilizing further north and rebellions developing in the rear, the future of the young Confederacy is very much in question.

Apostolic Archdioceses of America – Emperor Scorpious II
    Leader: Reverend Otto Urban Jr
    Capital: Dallas

-A letter arrives from Chicago, the contents are long and detailed, but they tell Otto Urban something that he's wanted for a long time. Power. In return for fulfilling the demands of the Chicago government to help restore order to the region, the Synod would be given political control over Texas and Otto would now be the governor. It is something that the residents of the less Catholic inclined Houston and a few other cities worry about, and it drives a very cogent point home – the Mormons are no longer welcome. Otto Urban then uses his brand new powers to immediately seize control of large areas of abandoned farmland on which he resettles numerous refugees and migrants. These become effectively state-owned ranches, and as thousands upon thousands of people are moved to them he also sends out militias and workgangs to begin restoring agricultural production as soon as possible. Due to the nature of the wet and dry seasons it is a race against the clock in the first half of the year to dig a lot of ditches and create underground cisterns for water storage in addition to manufacturing rainwater tanks to collect water. The project doesn't come anywhere near to completion and as the wet season approaches in May a lot of floods wash away a great deal of work. Fortunately a lot of water was retained in the process, and later in the year the new state farms report their first harvests.

-Pleased with the results, Otto then goes on a grand tour of Texas (dragging a number of Texan military officers along with him) to show how Texas could grow enough food for itself and by implication that the Chicago government is no longer needed. A currency reform promoted by Maryland later makes its way here, and soon “Texan dollars” are seen circulating amongst the soldiers. Economic stability begins to slowly return to the land and trade even revives to an extent, plus the Mexican hordes in the west are starting to settle down into their new homes – aided by the fact that a massive Federal army has been visiting destruction throughout New Mexico nearby and could just as easily go after them. A great number of Mormons are purged from government posts with federal backing, and many others begin to flee as refugees west or otherwise break out into rioting as the grip squeezes tightly around them. With access to the states piggy bank, Otto also quietly transfers a lot of funds to Louisiana to help the Synods branch there as it slowly rises in power and takes control of a number of government posts (aided by the backlash against Mormons) to the point that they “control” numerous counties and have raised several militias. Finally, on the 5th of November Texas decides to declare independence from the United States and declare itself “The Apostolic Archdioceses of America”, whereupon all hell breaks loose.

-Most of the Texan units in the army join the rebel state, although several officers who refuse to surrender are arrested and removed. The federal officials protest the insanity and flee to Houston with a number of loyalist troops to fortify the city, while the soldiers on the walls remain wedded to the Federation for now. Over the next few weeks the insanity grows worse as Otto mobilises his Texan forces and lays siege to Houston, followed by holding talks with the Trumpetine Wall garrisons to surrender. They hold out for a month before running out of food and surrender to Texas, although now this leaves Texas with the grand task of now not just only trying to establish their power throughout the rest of the region, but to also defend their country from Mexico. After the regular payments to the border Capos cease, the Mexicans start to raid parts of the wall and some of the land on both sides, and then to make matters worse the Gran Capo of Oxaca demands a massive payment from Otto in return for promising not to invade. Then for a final kick in the teeth, the Mexican hordes in the west declare that their loyalty was to the (dead for several years) Andrew de los Dakotas and they promptly began packing up. Federal and Texan units skirmish throughout the state, especially along the Garcian wall and outside Houston, leaving the land completely open for the Sinaloa and Cuetes to march east out of Texas and into Missouri and Arkansas to loot their way through the country. In the vacuum left behind by their sudden absence and in reaction to the Mormon persecutions, the Mormons throughout western Texas start banding together and establish a kind of army. They declare their loyalty to the Salt Lake government and establish a provisional army and administrative centre in Roswell. Many of them steal horses and machine gun rickshaws and ride throughout the Texan plains rattling off their guns at Federal and Texan forces and helping refugees to flee west to what is now growing into a exclave of the Surrogate United States. The year ends with Texas now split between multiple warring factions and Houston squeezed hard in a siege, made worse by the Confederate States cutting off food shipments to the city. The only supply line left runs through Louisiana, and this could be cut at any moment.

Provisional state of Gullah Geechee Protectorate – Amfleet
Leader: The Reverend Dr. Antwon Mviluki
    Capital: Brunswick

-As the civil war unfolds in the west, the Gullah come to the collective realisation that one day the war could very well come to their doors and into their homes to rape their wives. The state government begins by establishing more militias and actively recruiting from the population (often against the wishes of the ranchers who would prefer them to do work on their land) to boost their numbers and improve their chances come a potential invasion. Most of these new recruits train on the weekends with whatever weaponry they can find, ranging from kitchen knives tied to broom handles to army-issue assault rifles that the state somehow got a hold of. Many others are put to work throughout the year on constructing defences for the towns and a number of the more important locations – although a lack of materials and skilled labour hampers their efforts considerably. A plan to build hundreds of bunkers materialises into trenches and dugouts reinforced with scrap and wood, while they are unable to procure enough landmines due to the lack of manufacturing facilities and the fact that the more important wars elsewhere are swallowing up what little military production there is.

-Dr Antwon decides to write a letter to the “President” informing him that the Gullah stand for upholding “American ideals” (whatever those are), and religious freedom being considered the prime objective of his. He also declares support for the Maryland currency reform proposal, and in addition he mentions that the Gullah would not join any rebellious forces and would pledge its loyalty to the union (although he cunningly refuses to mention sending any men to fight in his wars) as matters stood presently, and despite the first letter being accidentally delivered to Nathanial Cross in New York, the second arrives in Chicago safely. There it is skimmed over and Saltzmann pens a reply to the effect of “Hold down the fort for us there” and gives Antwon control over a small federal military base possessing three pieces of light artillery plus some motor and bike rickshaws with machine guns mounted on them. Later on in the year, the Chicago government rolls out the currency reforms which essentially grant various governors and other areas the power to issue their own currencies, something that gives the Gullah Shilling an air of legitimacy that makes it much easier to accept as a form of payment. Even the ranchers are reluctantly starting to use them now, and in one case a particularly cunning Florida Man (who went around buying up shillings from ranchers who were “compensated”) ends up buying many of the Gullah shillings in circulation and then travels to Carolina where he exchanges them for Chesapeake dollars and uses the proceeds to buy himself a massive ranch there. Six weeks later it is seized by a Virginian militia.

-Antwon later travels around his nation on a bicycle, taking in the sights and observing the general conditions of the country. Noticing a great number of waterlogged areas, ditches, and canals brought about by climate change and land reform he decides to turn it into an advantage rather than let the land go to waste. A number of schemes for land reclamation and drainage had been tried out last year, but this time he decides to go a little bit bigger and declares a “Grand waterways project”. This mostly involved him founding a Board of state transport which (unlike most other states) has been tasked with water travel for the most part instead of railways and roadways. They begin by passing laws banning the dumping of refuse in canals and hire a number of carpenters, diggers, and various other people to start digging a network of canals throughout the Gullah state. Their works also involve the construction of dikes and drainage channels, and although they are successful at building a crude network by the end of the year they still have numerous problems brought about by an inability to drain much of the water away in addition to constant flooding. A few ranchers and sharecroppers start to take advantage of the state transport service by hiring barges to pick up goods and then transport them to the coast where they are sold in the towns or exported to other states. Some more land is also bought from the ranchers and more state-owned farms are set up, although for the most part they are largely in the hands of the sharecroppers. Most of these places run themselves almost autonomously and although they don't produce as much revenue as ranches most of the residents are very happy with this state of affairs. So much so, that in many ways news begins to spread elsewhere.

-The Southern states have long been a land full of many black people who have made it their home and despite the wear of time have clung on there. Now many of them are sharecroppers in the ranching system, forming the spine of Southern agriculture. With the civil war tearing the federation apart and the Gullah Geechee finally winning their own state, many blacks in the other states have been openly raising demands of their own to the increasing anger of the ranchers who have often raised militias or called on the army to suppress them. By 2369 this is no longer sustainable for by now numerous sharecroppers have begun rioting and organising on a bigger scale. Many in the Gullah Geechee feel a common cause with their comrades west and raise demands for a liberation of all blacks in the US south – especially the rest of the Gullah Geechee living throughout the eastern seaboard who have yet to win freedom of their own. However the last straw came when due to the Federal government pulling away vital men for the war in the war, Florida and her neighbours immediately raised arms and declared independence from the United States. A massive coalition of ranchers backs the new “Confederate States of America” and begin to brutally suppress sharecropper rebellions. This also leaves the Gullah Geechee in the uncomfortable position of being the sole Unionist holdout left in the south, surrounded by numerous hostile ranchers who are busy hanging Black Panthers.

-Even in times of conflict, the wisest men set aside time for learning and education, as is proper of any society wishing to call itself civilized. Numerous schoolhouses and churches have been helping to disseminate books on practical crafts to the people, enough to the extent that a few artisanal workers have emerged to ply their trades. With Maryland already being a model to follow, it doesn't take long for trade schools and guilds to begin popping up throughout the country. It may take some time for their full impact to be felt, but with carpenters building barges and tinkerers repairing bicycles now a regular sight in Brunswick one can feel that things still continue to improve. Unfortunately as more states break from the Union and the wars in the west escalate more and more people are on edge. Refugees are already trickling in from rebellions, and ranchers are demanding that they be repatriated by state authorities to their old ranchers. Pensilfaani, Maryland, and Virginia remain loyal to the union and are already mobilizing forces to crush the rebels (starting with Virginia seizing control of Northeast Carolina) and so Dr Antwon is now faced with the same problem many other leaders have faced in history: How to ensure his people survive.

Following the light of the sun, we left the old world - Christopher Columbus
    Events of the years 2370 – 2371:

Current Seat of government of the USA: Chicago
    Veep (Vice President): Elias Saltzmann
President: George Abraham Roosevelt (Personal name Flavio)

Current Seat of government of Surrogate government of the USA: Salt Lake City
Surrogate Veep (Vice President): Larry Nauvoo
Surrogate President: George Abraham Reagan (Personal name Kirtland)

-In March a special report reached the desk of the Veep (the Chicago one), marked TOP SECRET. He pulled it out of its special envelope and read the contents confirming that the nuclear bombs were now armed and ready to go. While making the special telephone call to the nuclear bombers, an entirely different event thousands of miles away was taking place on the borderlands with Mexico. With no help coming from the Federal government(s), the armies on the Trumpetine wall organise a complete abandonment of the Sonora and flee north to California, picking up whatever they could as they fled. The ranchers, sharecroppers, and townspeople likewise pack up and move away. In the resulting vacuum, the governor of Baja California tries to assert his authority before he calls in two brothers from Levya. Cabbayo and Semento travel to meet him and agree to fight on behalf of Baja California in return for lands to settle their followers. When the governor refused, they staged a coup, divided up the country and declared themselves “Capos” of Baja before pushing the Sonora out of the south.

-A number of bombs were loaded up into an aircraft on the 9th of March, 2370. The pilot (Demondre Henry) had been stationed in the Richmond aircraft base for a very long time, and given his intimate knowledge of the skies around the area had been given command of the aircraft. He recounted the following experience (translated from the vernacular):

We was soon up in the sky, on a course for Atlanta. Up pretty high, but ain't afraid of being attacked or shot down cause they didn't have no guns of their own or planes that could get to us. Soon we were on target above Atlanta, pressed the button. I shouted “bomb away” and everyone had their goggles on so it wouldn't blind us. I was softly counting the number of seconds. And we watched...
The bomb fell from the plane, a dulled and ancient piece of technology from a time long gone. Below it, a city of timber and concrete sat – a hundred thousand lived there. In spite of the war it was a busy market day and everyone in the city was out in the streets bartering and trading. Many children had just left school or the workshops and were piling out into the streets which were filled to the brim with market stalls, carts, and shanties. Many sharecroppers had also gone into the city to sell their wares. About forty seconds after the bomb dropped, the firing mechanism sprung into action. The day of reckoning had come. The last seal in the bomb preventing it from going critical was broken, and there was silence...

A few seconds later, a loud crash was hard as the roof of a church caved in. The people inside were crushed under the rubble, and screams could be heard. When the people nearby rushed into the church they found not just rubble, but chunks of metal lying around. Only after a number of local officials had arrived and cordoned off the area did a few scientists arrive to uncover what had just happened. A nuclear fusion bomb had failed to go off and had shattered on impact into many pieces.

On the desk of the Veep, the report contained a few lines that he had neglected to check over more closely.

“...this is our last shot. We just don't know how to make more of them, or really how to get them working anymore. There's not a man alive that knows how these work, and we had to guess and run every simulation we could think of when doing this. Truth of the matter is, if is this one doesn't work, none of the others will.”

-Another problem reared its head later on in April. The Commander of the Mormon forces went on a desperate gamble where he marched twenty thousand men through the Yellowstone land and bypassed the invading Federal army in the north which had captured Idaho Falls. Having done this, he put five thousand cavalry and rickshaws to storm down the poorly defended highways southeast and blocked off the railways. The Federal army was without supplies and then marched back east, desperately trying to keep up with the Mormon army heading east. After an exhausted march they camped in Casper in Wyoming and tried to rest for the night. In the morning they launched an assault on the Mormons and came close to breaking through their lines when the cavalry suddenly arrived and flanked the Feds. Light machinegun rickshaws were used to harass the Feds and force them into the firing range of the heavy artillery. Demoralized, tired, and outgunned, the Federal army broke and fled. Within a week the entire northern campaign was in chaos and Larry Nauvoo himself took command of another ten thousand men to march east on Chicago itself. The Federal central army in Utah had meanwhile laid siege to Salt Lake City, although with supply lines out east in threat of being cut off they barely cling on for dear life. Several militias in the Midwest were mobilised and several armoured trains were brought out to maintain supply lines out east, allowing them to maintain the siege. But by the end of the year the Mormons have not only reclaimed much of the northwest, but have gone east into the Dakotas and have begun taking over much of Western Canada as Federal forces surrender.

-The Southwest remains at war, with Baja California now in the hands of the Mexicans and Texas now drawing away vital men to the war effort, the city of Los Angeles is unable to receive any help. Only a cunning plot could save Los Angeles, and in August 2370 the Federal governor of the city had thought up one himself. He ordered a great number of fertilizer factories and warehouses seized and made into explosives, which he then had put into a number of fishing boats and yachts requisitioned from the rich. The Mormons began an assault on the city by firing off all their guns at once into Glendale before storming in through the breaches. A large part of the attacking force also tried to enter by a coastal assault on Long Beach, but upon entering the bay a number of fireships sail out along with drones which dive into the ships and explode in spectacular fashion. To make matters worse for the Mormons, rumours spread that Andrew de los Dakotas was alive and leading an army west – something apparently confirmed by the arrival of a small force on the hills to the east of the city. Believing it to be the avant guard of a much larger force, the Mormons flee the battle and lift the siege. In their attempts to escape, there is not enough room on one of the railway locomotives, and so many pile onto the train that it becomes top heavy and tips over into a river while they were crossing a bridge. The victorious Federal forces then retook control over parts of Southern California and reinforced their positions before marching east once more. With the Mormons in the west either temporarily thrown back or tied down, the Feds head east to put down the Texans.

    Patriots - Joshuadim
    Leader: George Richardson
    Base: Montreal

-New York has been through a lot over the past seven centuries. Passed between the Dutch, British, Americans, and then numerous factions within America, the latest of these happened to be the Patriots. A radical organisation devoted to restoring the Old America as it had been prior to these dreaded times. In January 2370, the last of them were starving and cold. The forces that besieged the city tightened the noose and over the winter began to batter down the walls. The old and sick were pulled back and hidden in the basements away from the shells, although these damp cellars were just as deadly as the bombs which fell. Nathanial gave boastful speeches on the radio to the citizens of New York, hoping to boost their morale as their children and wives withered away into skeletons before their eyes. Trees in the parks were cut down for fuel and their bark to be baked into bread. Eventually food shortages became so dire that people turned acorns into flour for bread, ate boiled pine needles, and even turned to cannibalism. Due to the lack of fuel and draft animals, rickshaws would be carried around by children. As the last of the food supplies ran out and people passed out from hunger, the forces of the Federal Government ordered a final assault on the city.

-Artillery focused on the defences in Jersey city and in Yonkers blasting holes through the walls and clearing a path for the infantry. Many people fled from the attackers to hide in the basements while there were Patriots who walked around ordering teenagers and old men out to fight the enemy. In one instance a former Marine turned Patriot would go from house to house with a submachine gun and demand that the men inside go out and fight. If they refused he would shower them liberally with bullets and move onto the next one. When the defenders ran out of bullets, they would hide in houses and try to stab Federal soldiers that entered with their bayonets and steal their bullets. Other buildings were rigged with explosives to collapse into the streets below in order to block off Federal advances. During the fighting several fires broke out among the slums, and unlike those of a few years ago there was no fire-fighting force to speak of and soon it grew out of control and threatened the headquarters of the Patriots. Nathanial was seen trying to escape Manhattan in an armoured car before it hit a pothole and the axle snapped in half. He took refuge in a building along with other staff and held out against the Federal soldiers for several hours. It was not them that would finish him off however – it would be the fires. Pinned down in the building, the hot fire soon not only consumed him and his retainers but would go on to sweep down the city and purge it clean. Years of rubbish, plastic, books, timber, and every other flammable material soon went up in flames in a city stuffed full of them and cobbled together out of scrap. The city burned hot and sucked in so much air that maelstroms would lift up people in the streets and pull them into the flames. The Federal army soon abandoned the city and fled to the countryside along with hundreds of thousands of other refugees where they watched the city literally implode. The fire burned so hot that many skycrapers, with their metal structures so weakened by the heat collapsed in on themselves and what was left of the iconic skyline rapidly vanished from view. The fires burned for over a week, in some cases becoming so hot that when people returned to inspect the damage they found pools of glass and metal covering the streets. Virtually none of the infrastructure had remained, and over ¾ of the city was reduced to cinders. The tallest building left in New York was the Statue of Liberty. It was later dismantled and melted down.

-With the Patriots demoralized, broken, and their leader dead much of the movement rapidly fell to pieces. Ohio and Pennsilfaani occupied New York state and dissolved many of the old administrative boundaries. The Big Apple itself was greatly reduced, and after 40,000 bodies had been cleared out of the rubble (the rest were never found, so the true figure is difficult to estimate) about 300,000 people returned to live in the city and start rebuilding it. It is hard to see how it could recover, for very little of the city survived and much of it was wiped clean in the chaos. So much so that its status as a Federal city was not only revoked, but it has now been classified as a “normal” city like any other in the country and has lost her right to receive Federal food shipments. The rest of the state was resettled with refugees, many of which went to New England as well. Ohio and Pennsilfaani spent much of the rest of 2370 brutally putting down the rebellion, in which Patriots (real or suspected) were hung from lampposts on the Federal highways throughout the northeast. Many of the cells were broken up and the movement was suppressed to the extent that by August the rebellion was considered finished. The few survivors (led by George Richardson) left behind fled to Quebec and went into hiding.

Commonwealth of Maryland – Native Hunter
    Leader: Jonah Calvert
    Capital: Annapolis

-The war began with a few happy successes in the south, lead by Virginia as they ambitiously seized large parts of the northeast in late 2369 and managed to reinforce their position throughout the early part of the next year. Unfortunately an attempt to call for a nuclear bombing of the southern cities did not bear fruit when the nuclear bombs dropped on the cities did not go off. They were the most expensive and complex duds on the planet. The results were summarily predictable. The Confederate forces mobilised far more men and in a shorter space of time than Maryland and Virginia could in the opening stages of the conflict, and when the Confederates moved into Virginia, Maryland was either unwilling or unable to move men south to help relieve the violent assault on Raleigh and instead stayed north to fortify positions along the Potomac, Rappahanock, and James rivers. The bulk of the Marylander forces remained at home and work was put mostly into just building defensive works in Virginia rather than actively garrisoning them. Although a few small detachments went with the coastguard south to help ferry supplies to the Gullah and later to help them secure Charleston, most Marylanders were content to remain at home and did not take any offensive moves of any kind nor did they move many men. Soon after this, the CSA was able to bypass Raleigh and moved north where they wrecked havoc in much of western Virginia. The Virginians were forced to abandon Raleigh with most of their supplies and guns still in there, and due to numerical inferiority were driven back by the Confederates and were unable to reach Richmond. The survivors fled to Norfolk which was put under siege. Following this the CSA broke into the poorly defended cities from Richmond westwards and then simply went around the defences and then went east. Supply lines did not impede them for they conducted a campaign of brutal genocide and pillaging, and the outnumbered and outgunned defenders of the fortifications along the rivers were forced to pull back north to the Potomac and DC where they managed to form a formidable defensive line preventing further movements north. On the retreat, numerous dams were blown up to deny the Confederates access (in the process ruining a great deal of farmland and water supplies), slowing their armies down enough that Maryland was able to save a great number of refugees and most of what remained of the Virginian armed forces.

-Preparations were not just made against the Confederates, but the Mexican hordes that swept into the heartland of America. Several areas were fortified and precious manpower was diverted to man said fortifications in the Ohio river valley and further south... only to discover that the Sinaloa and Cuetes had settled down for the time being. In light of the advances into Virginia by the Confederates the wasted resources and manpower had to be blamed on somebody, but by luck it happened to be on a general that had conveniently died during a typhus outbreak. Still, Jonah Calvert struggles to assert his authority in the east. The Pennsilfaani do not seem to heed his calls to help in the war, and the other southern states become very reluctant to take any actions either. An attempt to bring the Cuetes and Sinaloa onto his side in the war failed, even after generous offers of land. More headaches come as Maryland finds itself increasingly the only party left in the war as the Federal government is forced to divert more men and resources west to deal with the hordes and Mormons and the northern states offer only token support. The Gullah and Virginians soon become dependent on regular food shipments delivered by the Maryland coastbuard, which is stretched to breaking point just to send enough supplies to the large number of coastal fortresses and towns going down the coast. With the Confederates setting up artillery positions to attack the shipping lines, many men are lost in the effort. Soon after this much of Virginia is reduced to ruin and hundreds of thousands of refugees flood in all directions, speaking of horrors unheard of that they had been subject to. Famine breaks out in the summer and many diseases likewise spread with major outbreaks of cholera, typhus, and AIDS.

-A light at the end of the tunnel remained. An envoy travelled all the way over the Atlantic in a perilous voyage to Rome where he met with the Pope (currently residing in the Papal enclave of the Kingdom of Tuscany) and was treated well. After telling him of the events in the Americas, the Pope grew horrified at the news of the massacres there and immediately sent a legate to the country. With the grave damage to the church as it had suffered in Maryland, work had to be done to bring the faithful back together and to restore “The common decency of mankind” in these wartorn lands. Although the papal legate only arrived at the end of the year, he immediately called a number of clergymen together and immediately began work after Christmas Mass. Among these actions was to excommunicate Jebediah and numerous other Confederates for killing a great number of Christians and destroying many holy places. Even before that time, propagandists and army recruiters travelled over the whole of Maryland looking for volunteers to join the army to fight against the Confederates – speaking of a religious war to help save those being killed by devils masquerading as Christians. Many men signed up for one reason or another, but by far the biggest one was to fight a war regarded as morally right. Many refugees joined up as well, and soon by the end of the year the army had swollen in size and numerous small donations had made their way here. The church was instrumental in helping to bring many supplies and medical staff down into the country and to also set up hospitals. But the lack of industry made getting munitions and guns to the men hard to say the least, and while Maryland now has a much bigger army, it is also poorly armed and with little training.

    Commonwealth of Pennsilfaani – Griffster26
    Leader: Governor Samuel Lapp
    Capital: Filadelfi

-The soldiers of Pennsilfaani were loyal, brave, and strong. During the siege of New York they had set to work on destroying every possible utility that supplied electricity and water while also taking care to tighten the blockade. In the final weeks of the rebellion in New York, they pushed into the southern parts of the city after shelling many parts of the defences and then assaulted the breached walls, where they slew many Patriots before the fires which broke out consumed the city and all left within it. After the attack was over, the Pennsilfaani militia was mobilized and put to work on occupying both the ruins of the city and many other parts of the state. The newly created “Staatpol” was a kind of policing force made up from volunteers and militia units, tasked almost entirely with one job – eliminating the Patriots. With the help of Ohio they travelled throughout much of the northeast and would raid suspected Patriot cells and arrest the ringleaders before hanging them from the sides of roads. New Jersey and large parts of New York were then put under direct occupation by the Pennsilfaani military government. The Chicago Veep then praised both Ohio and Pennsilfaani for their efforts in the war and offered them the right to redistribute the lands as they saw fit.

-The rest of 2370 was spent in restoring order to the land, primarily by establishing new barracks houses and fortifications throughout parts of New York and New Jersey and redrawing the administrative boundaries. Most significant of these was the removal of New York as a Federal city, which meant that not only did it stop receiving the grain dole, but it was also to lose all of its special rights and privileges and would now be put under the rule of Pennsilfaani. About 300,000 people returned to live in the ruins and start rebuilding by the end of the year in NYC, but so much of it was ruined that it was impossible to re-establish the city as it once was. Numerous “villages” and “towns” have consequently cropped up amongst the ruins of the former metropolis, many of which do not have any kind of government nor do they seem to pay taxes nor possess any kind of defensive works. Infrastructure is especially poor too, and a famine later breaks out in the autumn causing many refugees to begin leaving the state to seek a better life elsewhere. Many of those who survive end up becoming sharecroppers and giving up their old freedoms. Samuel Lapp has also found new problems in that Ohio and the Federal government want to reorganise the borders some more and set up proper administrative divisions and potentially new states (in order to prevent another uprising). A final headache for Pennsilfaani is that towards the end of the year the Chicago government receives a final report on the northeast which establishes it as pacified, and formally asks Samuel Lapp to redirect his forces to help in the civil war where possible (either to fight on the east coast or in the midwest). With trade lines threatened by wars, refugees all over, and the conflict in the far west of America going badly for the Feds, there is talk that the Mexican hordes or the armies of the CSA could very well threaten the Mennonite homeland. Towards the end of the year, several Confederate units start skirmishing dangerous close to the southern borders of Pennsilfaani, and the genocide ongoing in Virginia has led many refugees to flee north into Pennsilfaani, bringing diseases and hunger in their wake.

Confederate States of America – Snoberry Tea
    Leader: Jebediah Deitrich III
    Capital: Tallahassee

-The armies of the south went marching off to war with fire in their hearts and eyes. The outbreaks of numerous sharecropper rebellions and the activities of many other would-be-rebels were simply not to be tolerated. He ordered no mercy whatsoever. Attempts to get the Cuetes and Sinaloa to intervene in the war on the side of the CSA were foiled when Javier of the Cuetes managed to convince the Sinaloa to stay put and then told the Floridian envoy to leave. In his rage, Jebediah ordered three nuclear-armoured trains to push north and to push as hard as they could while all of his armies would burn and destroy everything in their wake upon reaching Virginia. Virginia asked for help from Maryland which did not arrive, and so they were forced to hold back the collective might of the south by themselves. Maryland instead remained largely behind the Potomac and began heavily fortifying the river while sending ships down to the Gullah to help move supplies and reinforcements down there. In February, Jebediah ordered a campaign into the heartland of Virginia and declared that ranchers would be given priority over that of the sharecroppers.

-It didn't start too well, for Virginia had reinforced Raleigh heavily and filled it with supplies and blocked off the advance of the confederates. Undeterred, Jebediah ordered a desperate and hard push through to the west of the city using armoured trains to mow down sharecroppers and issuing a statement to “shoot any protesting black on sight”. The concentration of forces let them punch through the lines and upon crossing the border into Virginia, they immediately allowed their soldiers to “be at liberty”. Upon arriving in every new village, town or city, the soldiers would fan out to loot what they could. The wave of destruction fanned outwards and the garrison of Raleigh was forced to pull back north to meet the CSA in battle. Having pulled out, they left behind most of their supplies and munitions in the process and it quickly fell into Confederate hands. Following this the Virginian army fled east to Norfolk and fortified themselves there before being put under siege – one which they only managed to hold out against because Maryland ferried regular supplies into the city by sea.

-In the Gullah State similar activities happened, and although Charleston was lost, the rest of the Gullah were subdued (in addition to the rebellions in the rear) and they were soon trapped in both Beaufort and Charleston – again kept alive only by the grace of supply lines from Maryland. In spite of having lost a nuclear train when the Gullah managed to blow up a dike and drowned it, the remaining three were put to work on destroying Virginia as thoroughly as possible. When they reached Richmond, they went to the governors house and stole approximately 200 paintings, all of his carpets, the musical instruments, the curtains, books, statues, and they even pulled the door frames out of the walls and raping several of the servants therein to death in addition to ripping the jewellery out of their noses and ears and their dresses off their bodies. The naked bodies were thrown out of the windows into crowds of soldiers, who made a game out of trying to catch the falling bodies using their bayonets by impaling them like sausages. Since Maryland created a fortified border in the north, what remained of the Virginians and the refugees fled to it under the cover of Maryland blowing up numerous dams and flooding much of the land to their south, the Confederate forces were unable to advance any further through the waterlogged and ruined land and so set to destroying everything in Virginia instead.

-Even the ranchers grew horrified, and those who formerly did not protest to the arrival of the invaders soon began to fight against them – with deadly consequences. Ranches were raided, and when the sharecroppers fled into the forests, the commander would order the forest set ablaze and to “shoot every nigger that comes out”. Between the advancing flames and the guns of the Confederates, many perished. Many women were dragged out of their homes and were brutally raped, often five or more times a day. STDS spread rapidly in these conditions and led to several outbreaks (AIDS among them). Black men had their genitals sliced off and displayed as trophies by soldiers, while women had their vaginas mutilated with boiling water or farming implements. Others had their bellies sliced open and their entrails tied to a pole, with the soldiers using their bayonets to force the unlikely person to run forwards as their intestines unwound. In the town of Emporia the residents took refugee in a Catholic church, which was unceremoniously flattened using a bulldozer. Crops were also set ablaze and towards the autumn much of the human damage had been done. Of the two million black sharecroppers living in Virginia, over half of million of them had been killed and a further half million had fled north as refugees, with the remaining million sharecroppers halved by disease and famine to leave a mere four hundred thousand. The white population did not fare much better for about half a million of them also died (directly and indirectly) and a further million of them had abandoned Virginia. The remaining armies fled into the mountains west, north into Maryland and DC, or holed up in Norfolk.

-The final effort of the CSA was to destroy far, far more than just the people. They had been ordered to carry out a complete and total eradication. To this end, they would go into every building they could find and steal what they could before destroying the rest. Among the stranger items recorded as having been stolen from Lynchburg included windows, stairs, chimneys, sculptures, floors, doors, gates, fencing, and even roof shingles. What could not be stolen was set on fire, and what could not burn was smashed and toppled. By the end of the year, approximately one quarter of the total population of Virginia had perished and an additional quarter had become refugees. Numerous famines and diseases now crippled the land and numerous people with skills had died and much capital equipment and knowledge had been lost. Most churches and temples regardless of faith had been stripped down and destroyed, and many of the cities were a shell of their former selves. But it wasn't enough, and in September several dirty bombs were fired into Maryland. Unfortunately they were unable to poison many areas due to the limited amount of waste on hand and the fact they had to cover a great deal of land. Consequently the Marylanders responded by simply cordoning off the bombed areas and sending in cleanup crews, although it did ruin several ranches in the process. Dirty bombing and genocide was a line considered as having gone too far with Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Kentucky refusing to not only join the Confederacy, but they went further and declared their loyalty to the Union and began to mobilize their armed forces, during which time they managed to oust an attempted invasion from Texas with help from Federal supply ships going down the Mississippi and expelled anybody with ties to the Confederate government for their most dreaded crimes. The Pope (after an envoy to Maryland travelled to Italy) later sent an legate who on behalf of the Pope excommunicated Jebediah and numerous other officials in the Confederate government. Many Catholics throughout the CSA also felt uneasy with the scale of the genocide unfolding in the north (especially with so many fellow Catholics suffering) and many have begun joining the enemies of the confederacy, especially in the Mississippine states.

-During this time Florida also requisitioned most of the Chesapeake dollars they could find, burned about 5/6ths of them, and stamped them with a special Confederate mark to indicate that they were “Confederate dollars” to be now used as the new currency. Prisoners of war (typically sharecroppers) were put into a kind of slavery where they had to erect military structures, repair buildings damaged in the conflict, build railways and bridges, and other sundry jobs. Most of the rebellions which are put down end up producing a large number of prisoners who are put to work on the ranchers and in industries where they produce for the war effort. Much of the economy also steadily shifts towards being entirely state-directed as the war-economy comes into play. Due to the lack of skilled workers, capital equipment, and the resultant destruction in many parts (especially Virginia), they are unable to produce firearms that are high quality. Mass production takes precedence for the production of bolt-action rifles, munitions, uniforms, boots, and the like. Fuel shortages and infrastructure damage means that most soldiers have to march to the front, with horses carrying most supplies by cart (the rest in lorries and rickshaws). Although the good state of the railways in Florida allowed for rapid mobilization, they have come under increasing strain as endless delays cause production and distribution to back up. Soldiers are often prioritised over supplies, and while they were able to fuel their initial advance by pillaging the land, supply shortages begin to appear in the winter. The year ends with the discovery that the sole tannin factory in the southeast was destroyed by Black Panthers, meaning in turn no leather can be cured. As a consequence, many soldiers are unable to replace their worn leather boots and suffer from blisters.

Apostolic Archdioceses of America – Emperor Scorpious II
    Leader: Reverend Otto Urban Jr
    Capital: Dallas

-In the midst of multiple civil wars and invasions sits Texas, a land that hasn't known much peace for a few years now and one that one man cannot lay overlordship of. In the west the Mormons have seized control, and in the north and east the Federal government retains power. Even to the south there was an abortive attempt at an invasion by one of the Mexican hordes. But in March, the powerful Gran Capo of Oxaca followed on the footsteeps of this invasion to force the lesser Capo to return to Mexico. When he refused, the Gran Capo had him executed and redistributed his lands amongst his vassals before returning back to Mexico. When an open country ripe for the picking stood before him, it would seem odd that he would give up such an opportunity. However a convoy of trucks full of food and other movable goods was seen moving south into Mexico shortly afterwards. It was the “Payment” to the Gran Capo in return for him staying out of Texas. Otto Urban realised that in order to maintain peace he would have to get on the good side of the Mexicans, something that he did this year by sending large gifts to the various Capos to the south – although he had to pay far more than the Feds ever did in order to win their support.

-As to where these resources had come from, one only had to look to western Texas for the answer. The Mormons established a sort of breakaway state from Texas in the wake of the outbreak of the war, but being isolated and lacking supplies they were always somewhat on the edge. Otto ordered the Texans to mobilise a number of rickshaws and cavalry to harass their southern and western borders before sending in larger units of militias diverted from the siege of Houston. A second campaign was also organised to go to Louisiana to help cut off the supply lines for Houston, leaving only a token force behind to maintain the siege. This army went to besiege Baton Rouge, a major coastal city and also the biggest after New Orleans was abandoned years ago. An attempt to break through the Garcian wall along the I-10 did not go as well as planned due to the lack of manpower and artillery in the assault, and due to most of the routes east being blocked off by numerous defensive works, some of the army had to go on a long ardous march north and then east into Arkansas before heading to Baton Rouge. Further bad news came when the campaign in the northwest did not go particularly swimmingly well after news that the Feds had been thrown back in the Pacific Northwest had trickled down, with the implication that more Mormons would be coming to fight in the near future. Otto attempted to mobilize as many Catholics as he could to fight in the war by speaking publicly on the radio and sending out propagandists to encourage all Catholics to come to Texas to fight in the name of God. But then news of the genocide in Virginia trickled back, and many of the Catholics who otherwise would have gone west instead went east to fight in the war against the Confederacy. The final nail in the coffin was the papal legate from Italy excommunicating the Confederate politicians for their crimes in committing genocide against fellow Catholics and calling upon the faithful to come fight in the east. Many of those who would normally fight for Texas soon joined the ranks of the Mississippine state armies.

-Then things went from bad to worse after the Confederacy blundered several attempts to get the Mississippine states to join them, with Louisiana not only refusing but calling for help from her neighbours and declaring loyalty to the Union. The siege on Baton Rouge went poorly in part because they managed to get critical supplies from Federal supply ships on the Mississippi river. The route would normally have been blocked, but both the Sinaloa and Cuetes allowed their shipping to pass unhindered and by refusing to participate in the war they managed to free up enough Federal men to allow Louisiana to oust the Texans and push them out for good. Houston soon afterwards began to receive reinforcements and a sally out was made which caused numerous casualties to both sides (only by sheer luck did the Texans hold out and maintain the siege on Houston). The bad news is only partially lifted when the Mormons in the northwest hear of the defeat at Los Angeles and the movements of the Federal armies going east, implying in turn that they would not be able to count on any help from their brothers anytime soon. The Mormon state began to organise a withdrawal in September as the pressure mounted upon their defences, and by November most of the Mormons had either fled or been captured by the Texan forces. A well-needed victory, until it turned out that soon the Federal government was heading east to put down the Texan rebellion. Worst of all the Oxaca Gran Capo sent several threatening messages that unless payments were maintained, he would intervene to ensure that they were. He did not specify who would receive the punishment however.

    Freedmen's state – Amfleet
    Leader: Queen Quet III
    Capital: Beaufort

-News of the declaration of independence of the “Confederate States of America” doesn't take long to trickle down to the Gullah. Panic sets in, but the good Dr Antwon has prepared for such a eventuality. Learning that the confederation is intent on conquering the Gullah, he declares a state of emergency and some new measures. Firstly he declares his loyalty to the Federal government in Chicago and declares the CSA an illegitimate creation that breaks earlier promises made. His next move was to relocate the entire government of the state to Beaufort, a massive military complex where the US marines once trained and was later turned into a heavily armed coastal fortress. There he declared the creation of a “Freedmen's state”, a place for all black sharecroppers to find freedom. Ambitiously he not only laid claim to all areas occupied by the Gullah nation, but additionally declared that any black man wishing to live freely was free to join them if they so wished. Of course the reality is much more difficult to pull off.

-The opening stages of the war began with militias, the cronies of various ranchers, and the black panthers skirmishing throughout the Gullah state and parts of the south in a generally disorganised manner. No front lines existed in the first few weeks, but after the CSA managed to mobilise matters soon changed. IEDS were planted in bridges and buildings along the routes into the Gullah state, and with the aid of various sharecroppers were able to inflict considerable damage to advancing troops and forced them to slow their advance. Unfortunately a nuclear-powered train with heavy machine guns mounted on it later drove to Brunswick and mowed down numerous sharecroppers as it moved on the city, and even the destruction of one of the bridges proved unable to halt it as the heavily armoured train proved impervious to shelling and was able to soon repair the bridge. Although the train was able to reach Brunswick it was unable to reach Beaufort due to the fact no railway existed, and when the CSA attempted to lay tracks and enter, the Black Panthers blew up a dike and drowned the train with all of its crew. Later arriving in Brunswick, the Confederate forces shot any of the (black) inhabitants who resisted and then imprisoned the rest and put them back into bondage. A lot of the land formerly brought into common ownership and that which had been drained through land reclamation was also given to the ranchers who had lost their old lands. They put the sharecroppers back to work on the farms, forcing others to join “Rancher militias” which they have set up to defend their holdings.

-As matters got more desperate and more and more of the country was occupied, the guerilla attacks increased in intensity. Militia units ranging from poorly armed sharecroppers to Black Panthers with former marines training conducted hit and run attacks on CSA units and made sure to also build up an intelligence network throughout the countryside with the aid of sympathizers. Unfortunately for those who rebelled further west, the sharecroppers were unable to hold out against their better-organised rivals and were eventually suppressed. The lone success was that Charleston managed to successfully overthrow the sitting government and began barricading the city, only then for the CSA to besiege the city and begin shelling it. Soon only Beaufort and Charleston are left as the sole holdouts of the Gullah state, kept fed by supplies ferried in by Maryland and Virginia. Numerous naval battles broke out on the coast, and only by sheer luck do both cities manage to hold out against the besieging forces. But it is a fragile link that could break at any moment, and the lack of medicine and food caused a cholera outbreak which not only killed hundreds of soldiers, but took Dr Antwon with it. On his deathbed he declared his fifth wife Queen Quet III as his successor due to her popularity, political skills and the figure of a “natural matriarch” that she exuded. She takes command of the remaining scattered forces and continues to help organise uprisings, but with the sieges taking their toll and Maryland unable to send enough force to help lift the siege it is indeed looking dire for the Gullah.

    Cuetes – Ruskie
    Leader: Javier Nores
    Base: Somewhere

-The past few years have been ones of ups and downs for the Cuetes. After Javier led his people into America seeking food and water they initially declared loyalty to Andrew de los Dakotas before he died. Upon his death, the Cuetes severed their ties with the American government because they did not consider the next Vice president to be a strongman like Andrew was. When the civil war broke out, Javier ordered his people east through Texas and towards the Mississippi, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake as no side was able to intervene due to pressing concerns elsewhere. With the Mormon civil war in the west, the Texan revolution in the south, and the Confederate war in the east nobody really took much notice of the relatively minor threat of the Cuetes migrating around the central parts. After arriving on the Mississippi in late 2369, Javier ordered his men to encamp and begin raiding the neighbouring areas for supplies. This raiding later stopped after the main ranchers held talks with Javier and agreed to give him what the Cuetes wanted willingly, and were overjoyed to discover that the rapacious Mexicans demanded far less in terms of resources than the Federal government ever did. They also allow Federal supply ships to pass down the river unhindered, something that prevents the Feds from taking action as quickly as they would have normally done in cases of invasion. Several deserters and refugees even join the ranks of the Cuetes, helping to fill out losses from earlier conflicts.

-Following this, Javier set up a court in the middle of the encampment and had various cases between members of the group brought before him. In one instance he permitted two men to have a duel to settle their differences, and in another when two women were fighting over claimed ownership of a baby. He managed to resolve the matter by hiring a “geneticist” who used his magical powers to determine who the rightful mother was. He also busied himself with meeting envoys from other powers. The Sinaloa are receptive to talks, but in talks of alliance they refuse to be placed under any Cuete command whatsoever. They do however mention that the Federal government had offered them rule over all of the US southeast in return for participation in the war, while the CSA had offered them the northeast. Javier manages to convince the Sinaloa to instead stay put and extract rent from the Midwest for now, although upon hearing this news the visiting envoy from Florida flew into a rage and started screaming at Javier for his meddling in the Sinaloa and for refusing his offer. He was summarily tied up, sewn into a sack, and unceremoniously thrown into a river. Unfortunately the Federal government has begun to raise an army from whatever they can scrap up in Canada, and is also building a number of armoured trains and some drones to go south in the near future, their forces being potentially large and well-armed enough to pose a serious threat to the Cuetes. The southern states have also been mobilising, and may move soon as well. In the interim Javier managed to get his hands on a great number of auto-rickshaws, horses, carts, and machine guns. From these he orders several raids on hostile militias and their outposts, capturing even more equipment in the process and expanding the size of his horde. Soon after this, one of his minor commanders points out that they could be used to massively improve their mobility.

    Royal Canadian Navy – Viper_123
    Leader: Admiral Cedric Kaminski
    Base: New Ottowa

-Canada was once an independent nation, long before all of this. The beginning of the loss of their sovereignty began with trade deals and ended with de facto annexation into the United States of America. When this happened, the Canadian navy was graciously allowed to be autonomous within the wider military structures of the United States, and it served in every war from World War 3 nearly three centuries ago, through the civil wars and beyond. The Canadian fleet is currently commanded by Admiral Kaminski, the latest in a long line of naval officers of the Kaminski family who served with noted distinction in all those centuries. Following the crisis of the 22nd and 23rd centuries their numbers were greatly reduced as was the power of the Canadian navy and nation. Much of what was left included the RCNV Valiant Shield, a rare example of one of the peaks of human technology in the 22nd century. It remained largely at port in Greenland and would occasionally travel out to intervene in various overseas conflicts as demanded by the Federal government, but in recent years weakening Federal control and then the outbreak of the third civil war has left them largely at liberty to do as they pleased. The collapse of trade in the past decade however has left Greenland in a dire position, and eventually as supplies from the mainland dried up Cedric Kaminski decided that he had to take action or suffer the consequences of not doing so.

-Setting out to sail south he routinely ignored messages from the Federal government demanding that he attack the Confederate states and help contribute to the war effort, and would instead dock in various locations. The pride flagship of this fleet was the RCNV Valiant Shield, an experimental nuclear-powered ship that despite being a technological wonder was nearly two hundred years old and clearly showing signs of having seen better days. Nonetheless it was still formidable and possesses weaponry unseen of since the last civil war, such as lasers and heat ray devices which did not work all too well. Due to the loss of GPS technology they left several beacons in the seas as they went south, docking in Maine to trade before heading south to Maryland. The state was already extremely tense due to the ongoing Civil war, and although they were able to parlay with numerous fishermen they were unable to catch the attention of the states governor, who refused to meet with Kaminski as he had more pressing concerns to attend to as he built up his defences.

-Unable to get much of anything done in terms of dialogue, Kaminski nevertheless manages to convince a number of fishermen, smugglers, and smaller traders to regularly meet with the smaller vessels of the fleet to conduct business. Most of this involved selling the sailors food (especially fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat) in return for various refined metals mined from Greenland which could fetch decent prices on the mainland. Traditionally Greenland sent regular supply ships back and forth, bringing desired foods and mainland goods in return for minerals. With the Feds no longer capable of doing this, the fleet has taken this job upon itself and over the year continues to travel up and down the eastern coast carrying out trade and occasionally shipping back fresh food to Greenland. However the lack of replacement parts for some of their equipment is a concern as trade breaks down, most notably with news that nobody on the continent is producing silicon chips any longer. Other problems manifest in the political sphere as the Federal government and several east coast governors continue to demand that the fleet intervene in the war. Some of them threaten to crack down on trade to starve the fleet away, while others offer large gifts of food and other resources in return for cooperation.

I honestly have no idea how I can go forth. I'm thinking of surrendering just for the sake of keeping Texas somewhat alive
